Tues. the 5th I went in for a heart cath and thought it would be a balloon to clear things or possibly a stent put in. When I awoke I was shocked that nothing had been done and that I need bypass surgery. they found one artery was blocked 100% and three more were at 90%. So now I need to go through the waiting and anxiety all over again. I don't see the surgeon until the 14th. In the meantime I'm too take it easy and I can't even go out and blow snow using my riding snowblower. The doc says the cold air could trigger things and really wants me to wear a face mask when outside
Well Jack, on the good side they caught it before anything serious happened. I wish you well as things progress. I would suggest you follow any instructions your doctor gives you.
I just recently found I have an issue with my heart too but it's not as serious as yours. I have sporadic chest pains that coincide with my heart beat. After a stress test this week they found my heart beats are sometimes too close to each other and no blood is pumped. There is no pulse for the time that is happening. I'm scheduled to wear a monitor next week to gather more info. Many people have irregular heart beats but there are different reasons and we're going to find out what's going on.
Hang in there Jack. Getting old isn't always easy but it is a good thing as long as we keep doing it.
Good Luck Jack. Take some duck tape with you just in case. :D
Good thing it was caught before something bad (or worse?) happened. Follow instructions and don't push your luck. Plenty of folks have gone through this type of procedure and gone on to live better lives, hang onto the positive.
Best wishes, Jack. They really do great work anymore. One of my friends has had around 16 bypasses total in his life. Now they send him home the next day. It sure wasn't like that in 1980 or so when he had his first one.
Good luck, like others said it's good they found it before anything really bad happened. At least you have a good excuse not to shovel snow now. I shoveled my house, my Moms and my sister yesterday, all the time thinking about how potentially bad it could be. Hopefully the day after your surgery you are on here telling us how great you feel.
Thanks guys. Everyone I've ever talked with that has had a bypass talks about how much better they felt after having it done. But for someone whose only had one surgery, a hernia operation it's a bit worriesome. Heck until 2 years ago when I broke my pelvis I'd never even had a broken bone
Hang in there Jack ... Like everyone says this procedure is done every day .... ( I know ... Every day but not to YOU .... )
Good that they found it now before something more serious happened ....
My wife had a mechanical heart valve installed over 10 years ago .. Other than some "ticking noises "from time to time she is as good as new .... :D
Follow the doctors rules & you will be up & running in no time better than ever ... 8)
Bob ....
Jack,
I have had three surgeries. None on the heart tho. All of them made me nervous. Modern technology can work wonders. Good luck.
Don
A friend I knew for a long time always looked kind of grey complectioned. He had heart surgery and next time I saw him he was glowing pink.
You will look and feel a whole lot better.
Best wishes...
I had mine 18 years ago, straight from the cath table to the OR. I think they are less invasive now, I have a great looking scar in the middle of my chest and down my left leg. It's not a cakewalk by any means but not anywhere near as bad as you would think.Do what they say and the discomfort is mostly gone in a couple days. The work continues for as long as you live.
Best of Skill to your surgen. Hope all goes well and easy for you Jack...
Tim
Oh gee, do hope all goes well.
Jack has to get well. We aren't done working together yet.
Charlie
Serious business, that. But, they used to say it was "easy as rolling off a log". I'll be holding good thoughts for ya'.
One thing to keep in mind. Do exactly as the doctor orders AFTER your surgery . If you are like my father in law you will feel better than you can imagine, however healing takes time.Even though you will feel great ,take the time to do as your doctor says ,on the time frame he says, to ensure you heal properly. My father in law went from grey to pink after the surgery, I have not seen him this healthy in over 10 years.
I hope all goes well for you. As mentioned , follow instructions from doctors.
A buddy of mine had open heart surgery last year. New heart valve installed and a 5th bypass added. His Previous bypass surgery was 6 yrs ago.
Five yrs ago had the same numbers as you. They cut on me Wed AM did four
bypasses. I was home Sat. noon. Best I have felt in thirty years. GOOD LUCK!
Ernie

The cold..(I am assuming dense) air is a relatively new finding.A pretty serious one. Don't fool around with that one. Prolly a BIT more serious than early cowl induction  These procedures are much.much better..and more common than they used to be.
Good Luck :!:
Jack,
Take care, and I have you in my prayers.
Doug
I'm glad that found it!!!!
Get well so you can go cruisin this year!!!!
Russ&Irene

I bet you feel better than you have in years, even if you haven't felt bad. Everyone i know that has had this type of surgury said they felt so much more energy afterwards. Good Luck. :D

Just a quick note. Jack had triple by-pass yesterday and is resting well.
Charlie
Thanks for letting us know. I get afraid telling someone everything will be alright but I'm glad when it is. GPster
I was thinking about this all day yesterday, I'm glad the result are good.
Pleased to know it went well.
Jack welcome to the Zipper Club!
Ernie
I am happy to hear this. I wish him the best recovery.
Thanks for the update Charlie, and as they say.... "Get well soon" Jack! You're gonna be hard to keep up with this summer with all that new plumbing.
Thanks for the update Charlie! Please extend our best wishes to get back to it quickly!!
Thanks for the update Charlie ... Tell him he now has to listen to the Dr. & not go rushing things ...
Bob ...
Glad to hear that it went well, hopefully he's back on here soon!
Glad he is doing well.
Bounce back Jack!!!
Sounds like you are just like an old hot rod engine..getting a "valve job" Good Luck

Best wishes, Jack!
UPDATE.
Jack was moved out of critical care yesterday evening. Now they can start torturing him. I talked to Carol this morning and she says he is doing very well. No estimate on when he will be heading home. He's in Mercy Hospital, Room #238, in Muskegon, MI.
Charlie
Great news Charlie!
Glad everything went well!
Thank you for the reports Charlie.
I went up and looked in on Jack today. He's moving a little slow but we had a good chat. He's taking 2 or 3 walks each day. Thinks he may be released on Monday if all of the quick disconnects work okay. Says it hurts to cough.
Charlie
All my friends that have been split up the middle said they gave them a pillow to hug before they coughed. Unless they have changed the procedure, you are held together with wire.
best wishes for a great recovery
He will be told by the doctor to sit in the back seat when travelling by car. Coughing is bad ,an air bag can be fatal.
Good report Charlie.
Wow! I must have been under a rock as I missed this post all together.Jack....I'm glad everything went well and you are on the mend! Charlie.....You're a pretty good guy to have around......make sure he follows doctors orders. We probably won't be able to keep up with the old fart after this :P Look forward to seeing you guys somewhere down the road this Spring/Summer!
Hey guys thanks for all the wells wishes and advise.Just got home awile ago and am super tired. Instead of a pillow this hospital gives you a good size teggy bear to clutch to your chest
Glad to hear you made it home. Mike

I'd like to see a video of you having a coughing spell with Teddy
It's good to hear that you're on the mend Jack.
That's all good news Jack, glad to hear you're on the mends. Will you still be Phat Rat on this board or will you now be known as Eric VonZipper er I mean Jack VonZipper. Heal well my friend...............
I'm closing in on 20 years since mine, you've got a lot of living left in ya. Good luck. Skip
Good to hear you are home & on the mend ... :D
Do what the Dr. tells you & don't try to rush things .....
Does Teddy go night-night with you :?:
( Wait til the grand kids see that ...  )
My wife still has her "heart" shaped "coughing pillow" . They are made by volunteers & donated to the hospital to pass out to heart surgury patients .... 8)
Get well soon ....
Bob ......
Glad you're home Jack. Talk to ya in a day or so.
Charlie
My wife still has her pillow too. I'm glad no duct tape was needed.
Sorry No PICTURES will be available. When I no longer need it it's going to be a nice present to give to a 4 yr old grandaughter. Sorry no zipper it's a nice straight line. If he was a bodyman the wouldn't show. As is, it's a nicely dressed seam. I don't know for sure how it'll be in the end but was told many times his lines are no more than a thin white line
I don't know Jack.........maybe you should hang onto that Teddy bear so he can ride shotgun with you on those long tin hunting trips......
Hmmmm, that might be an idea for a movie! Adult guy, hangin' with his Teddy............................nah, that's silly! ;)
Heal well.

Hanging with his teddy, or wearing his teddy? Jack does both
If Jack laughs as hard as I did at that, its going to hurt.

.....another reason to hug Teddy 8)
Hospital gave me a pillow and my "friends" got me a blow up sheep.

Jack has one of them too.
I should've know better than to mention that bear. I found that at least at the hospital here for at least 5 yrs they've been given to all first time open heart sugery patients. Stent and secondtimers don't get one

You don't want to be a secondtimer! You have to make the most of your first second chance, some people don't get that second chance!

I definitely DO NOT want to do this again. I had a roommate the last night I was in who was 81 and had bypass surgery 5 yrs ago and had just had to have a heart cath. But when his wife and son were talking to him about some of the things he should quit eating he was plain in stating he had no intention of doing so.
I feel I've lived through 3 episodes in life that could have been the end. A rollover in to a tree as a 17 year old, that resulted in a scratch on the fore-head only, the garage/truck episode 2 yrs ago and now this. I don't want to try and find out just how many more chances I'll be given
I showed this to Carol today. She also got a great chuckle out of your comments
Don't let her have the bear..........
No it's going to a 4 yr old granddaughter
This thread reminds me of a cartoon I saw many years ago. A guy has his chest opened for a surgery and wakes up after the surgery to find the big ship tattoo on his chest was sewn back together shifted off center.
Glad to see you're on the mend, Jack.
