Title: Mind Boggling 2
Post by: enjenjo on February 15, 2004, 07:42:25 PM
QuoteOf course my first post after the test was called "Mind Bogglin" where I asked what profession everyone was in. The response was overwhelming to say the least...If that was asked now it would certainly be the longest post in history I think:-)...there's a lot more guys and gals here now.

Lets do it.

I am a heavy truck mechanic, for the next 7 months, and then I will be living a life of leisure, I retire in September. I plan on fooling with hot rods full time then. Hard to believe I have been here almost 7 years.

I am a retired Industrial Arts Teacher (shop teacher).  I drive a school bus route twice a day and I work on hot rods.  My wife says I donate my time to other peoples projects.  I have a friend who is retired and he spends a good part of the day with me.  We either work on one of the projects I have in the shop or we work on one of our own.  I have a lot of visitors everyday.  I am currently building a 1939 Chevy Coupe,  working on a Model A frame, building a 1954 Chevy for my wife, and getting my Dodge Dart ready for some bracket racing.  Life is good.

I was a bulk power switching center operator for 34 years.
Retired in 96.
Interesting job and different every day.
Sometimes so interesting we couldn't hardly stand it - considering the lightning storms, dust storms, wind storms, salt storms and the like.
Earthquakes too.

I have a wide range of interests and stay busy most all day every day.
A little writing, a little roadster building, learning new things and enjoying life.

Kinda hanging out in limbo here till the house sells - looking good right now - and then it's off to sunny Arizona.

I'm still working at a steel rule die shop, same as the last 27 years. Currently in the QC area, (As in the only person doing it on two shifts) I get to do what we used to have three people doing, but it's the only way to keep the shop moving to Mexico, it's hard to compete with $45 a week pay. The company is Canadian owned, operates our shop in the U.S and we ship almost everything we make to Mexico

I am a national support engineer primarily involved in level 2 support for complex transmission and switching  faults. I was the first technical employee contracted by the company in Australia in 1997.

I'm in transportation management, all on the carrier side.  Over the last 15yrs I've been in vans, flatbeds, intermodal (piggyback & containers) refrigerated, brokerage, outsourced logistics, and probably dabbled in some other stuff that slips my mind at the moment.  About to start (2/16/04) a job supervising a customer service dept of 10-12 people at a trucking & warehousing company.  I always tell people you have to be a little nuts to enjoy this business and I must be a little nuts because I do enjoy it.

Union Sheetmetal Worker specializing in Custom Stainless and Aluminum Fabrication, mainly Restaurant and Food Manufacturing equipment. Also AWS Certified Welder for TIG and MIG.

Spent about Six years as a Mechanic straight out of Highschool, but got burnt out pretty quick. The stuff I learned in those six years has definitely been useful though. It was an old fashioned garage owned by an old Hot Rodder so most of what I learned was dated, even back then.

I am a 61 yr. old retired boilermaker certified pressure weldor. Retired two yrs now!   I spend my days now working in my shop . I work on any thing that I can get thru the doors.  Mostly hot rods and car projects that guys have run into trouble with . In the last couple years I have played
with electronic feul injection.(after market=  Felpro/ Fast  /  Accel)  When
the shop starts to be a drag I play with 1/4 scale model air planes(WAR BIRDS) on the week ends. If the shop allows I would like to take in some
car shows, cruise ins , swap meets this year.    Maybe I could meet some of the RRT group at these events.     AHHHHH yes life is great :D

My job is to procure prototype parts for a test and development engineering lab.  If an engineer can dream it up, I get it made.   I've done that for 16 years.  Before that I worked 21 years at Clark Equipment.  We made darn good forklift trucks from scratch.  We did everything....made the hydraulic cylinders, uprights, frames, sheet metal.  They couldn't compete with the foreign made forklifts so they went pretty much out of business.  I liked doing that and I like what I do now.  I want to retire but I'll prolly miss my job...it keeps me on my toes.

I've got a '31 Chevy pickup that's garage built on a budget but it's fun.  There's a '30 and a '31 chevy that are projects.

I worked 25+ years in my Dad's lawnmower shop, doing whatever was necessary.
...I did sales, parts & equipment inventory control, pick-up & delivery, custodial duties (yup, even cleaned the crapper!), and my own favorite, REPAIRS.
....We never asked an employee to do anything we hadn't done ourselves!

For 33 years (15 years concurrent with the mower shop) I have been  building, repairing, or modifying carwash equipment at my Dad's carwash.

My Dad celebrated his 90th birthday last month. ....He never retired, and was very active in the everday routines of the carwash until his health declined shortly after his birthday.
.....He always told me, "Come in early, stay late, work hard, work cheap, and I'll give you the business!"
.....I'm not sure just HOW he meant that!

I'm a professional 'Knowitall'. or as my job description calls it, a 'Smartarse'.

I'm expected to know everything there is to know, about everything my company does in order to ensure that everybody who needs to know anything, is taught everything they need to know.

To do that, I must become completely intimate with every detail of each product.  Thus I'm involved in some small way fom concept or inception thru the design, engineering and testing processes to manufacturing, marketing and and maintenance until the end of its life.  I also must have a very good knowledge of our competitors products and how they comapre with our own, thus I have to spend much time evaluating and comparing all of them.  Like Choco and others here, I too have authored and published a number of books on behalf of my employer and annually I produce volumes of printed, video and or multi media based material dealing with each product in detail.

My 'company vehicle' is usually provided by Boeing, although I often clock up a few hundred thousand ks each year at the wheel of various motor vehicles.

My job requires me to speak with authority and confidence to groups of people ranging from 30 to 500 at a time, a task I actually relish for some strange reason.  My strength is the ability to descibe each and every feature of any given product in detail, explaining in layman's terms what it is, what it does, and what that means to the end user.  I can also demonstrate & descibe how it's made and show you how to diagnose problems and repair it in the highly unlikely event something goes wrong with it.

Even tho my job can sometimes be very frustrating and it often keeps me away from home for extended periods, I'm nowhere near old enough to be considering retirement and even if I was, I can't imagine not getting up each morning and cursing the fact I have to be leaving for 'the office'.  Fact is, for a bloke like me, I really do have the best job in the world.  Sometimes I even have to pinch myself to make sure it's not a dream that I'm getting paid a large sum of money for having more fun than one can have without getting nekkid with a member of the opposite s*x.

i guess i'll chuck in my two bob.

i started mechanical engineering at uni. i got a job pwrking part time selling 3D mechanical engineering software (autodesk inventor for those familiar with the field). i worked for that company for a number of years before they carked it as a result of dodgy management. i went out on my own and contracted my skills to various companies, for a bit over a year.

then one day one of my clients had me help them with a sale not far from my house, to a contract engineering firm. turns out the owner of said firm wanted to get into the go kart market. turns out that i had some experience in the go-kart field already, both from a hobby and professional perspective. so you could say my presentation went pretty well. they bought the software that day.

i went in to start the "training" two weeks later, and became immediately suspicious that i might have a new job. one very short discussion later, ie:

"how much do you want"
"$X per annum"
"okay"

i was the engineering-manager/chief-engineer/draftsman/NC-programmer (depending on the time of day) for a brand new (and commercially as yet unheard of) go-kart company.

like carps, a guy like me couldn't have a better job. in my case, that means that i play with computers, NC lathes, mills, and benders, all day, designing a product i love, and giving me access to all sorts of machinery that i can use in my hobby, all while making a good dollar, in a 15 minute peak-hour drive from my house!!!

lovin' it...

by the way everyone, the mythical carps works for toyota.

I'm Chief Engineer for the largest specialized trailer company in the US.  we build everything from small 6,000 lb capacity utility trailers to very large trailers for hauling transformers, stamping presses, etc.  Our largest being a 950,000 lb capacity, 128 wheeled monster for legally moving down the interstate a 85' long X 22' diameter autoclave for delivery to a gold mine.
I too enjoy my job but often I wish I could do something with a little less responsibility.  I think I'd like to work at a parts store as a counterman who might know something about cars and be willing to help people.  But then I don't think they ever hire those types.

Current projects are a 1933 Dodge Coupe and a 1927 T or something that will go on the T frame.  Haven't done much on the rods lately but hope that changes soon.  When I retire more is planed.

I am the assistant to the Sales Manager for our local cable company.  I do all the daily paperwork for the sales team, along with their payroll, including commissions.  I am on the computer all day long and once my job is complete my time is my own here at work.  Most days I can do my eight hours worth of work in 3 or 4 hours which leaves a bit of time to hang out here, the HAMB and a few other choice sites.

I also have a part time job, nites and weekends, at the local scrapbook store.  It's a block from my day job which makes it very convienant to go from one to the other.  I have been averaging approx 25 hours there per week.  Not only do they pay pretty decent for part time work but the discount on my scrapbooking supplies is AWESOME!  :D  I'm trying not to spend alot there and save for a top for Big Olds.

A couple times per month I sell my hand painted ladies clothing at art and crafts shows in the metro Detroit area.  It gives me my extra summertime cruzn money.

I "found" my first car related online site in Jan of 2000.  I can't remember exactly when I found the RRT, but I think it was shortly after the Franks took over.  I've met a TON of cool hot rod folks in the last 4 years.  Wow, it's hard to believe it's only been that short of a time.  Seems like I've know alot of you ALOT longer then that

I'm looking forward to meeting alot more of you guys this upcoming summer.

Magazine and book publisher for past 27 years. Publisher of Australian Street Rodding Magazine and quite a few hot rodding related books including those written by Choco. Love my work but there are never enough hours in the day. Currently doing a book on Australia's early hot rodding history which is absolutely fascinating - will probably have to do a third book to get it all documented properly. Just started a 36 Ford tudor project but haven't been able to get near it much lately. Married to Mary for past 33 years - 4 children (2 girls grown up and gone, 2 boys 18 and 13) one grandchild.Would love to retire soon but there are too many books I still want to do and too much happening in hot rodding at the moment. Live in Castlemaine - the Street Rod Centre of Australia which is a great place to live even if you aren't a hot rodder, but even better if you are. Will be at NSRA Nats and Bonneville again this year.

Hi All, I'm a radiographer, been taking x-rays since I was 17 years old. I opened my own practice over ten years ago and now find I'm working harder and longer than ever.
In my "spare" time I manage the Victorian Hot Rod Show (an indoor static show) for the Victorian Hot Rod Association here in Australia, I've been involved with the show for about thirty five  years and have managed it for the last 20 years. See http://www.hotrod.com.au for some more info.
I drive a 32 Ford roadster that I have owned for the last 38 years which was registered in 1957, probably Australia's longest registered rod. Still doing things to it.
For the rest of my time I am restoring a 1887 Victorian house and gardens. (Wanted: help in pruning over two hundred roses).
I married with three grown kids, two of whom help with the show. Two sons puter programmers and my daughter an insurance broker, (she owns a mean 51 Studebaker 2 door sedan.)

Currently in semi-retirement. Started out pinstriping when I was 11 years old,did my first car when I was 13 and never looked back.Did a stint in the Navy(1964-67),toured the country for awhile afterwards(due to a failed marriage attempt)finally alighting in Massachusetts(my home state).Worked in a Corvette body shop for awhile, then a Mercedes-Benz dealer(first as a body man, then in parts and eventually as parts manager)for the benefits and still doing striping because I loved it.Married in 71 and managed to stumble thru that for 20 years.Had a son(and lost twins)and a herd of foster children(about 170 give or take)and wrote a book about it.Grew up with my grandparents and finally met my dad(and half-siblings)when I was 44.Got divorced and married my first true love(whom I had met in 65 while in the service)in 93.Been battling cancer for 2 1/2 years(and winning)now.Turned 60 a few weeks ago and enjoying every minute of it.Have a 1955 safari wagon I drive all the time(108K to date),a 1957 Safari(ex-race car)that hopefully will be out soon,a 25th Anniversary T/A that needs to be either sold or torched,a 1991 GMC Syclone that DEFINITELY needs to be torched. My bride has a 1972 Thunderbird(70K one owner AZ car)and our trusty GEO Tracker;oh yeah and our dog Muttley, along with our 3 kids(29,33,and36)and 2 grandkids(10 and 16).Hope I haven't forgotten anyone or anything;CRS ya know!

I just turned 60 a week ago, so now I'm with the elite group on this board.  I own a tourist store in the southeast part of Utah (  Purple Sage Trading Post (http://www.purplesagetradingpost.com/)  ) that somehow manages to do less sales each year, but still provides enough income to keep going.  I don't see retirement anytime soon, but Social Security is just 2 years away and that will help.  I don't really do much at the store now(4 to 5 hours a day), just read your guys and gals posts and deal with the occasional customer  .

I drive a '48 GMC pickup I bought in 76 and made into a rod in the '90's.

I used it to haul all the building materials for my house in Wyoming, so it is special to me.

As soon as I can finish building my house, a year and 8 month project at this point  ( A too long house construction project (http://purplesagetradingpost.com/sumner/newhouse/house-index.html)     ), I'll finish

a second teardrop I started and start working on a lakester for B'ville  that I have been collecting parts for from some of you and

at the same time will work on the '38 or '39 Ford pickup I dug up in the desert along with

building a small 5th wheel camper to pull behind the '38.

Look forward to seeing a lot of you again this summer at B'ville.  If you are in ever in my part of the country be sure and stop and visit.

I am a professional artist. To keep the wolf from the door I teach elementary fine arts.
Previously, a senior engineer at General Dynamics, advanced design.... F-16's and beyond. Before that, pattern maker and model builder.
Built hotrods as a young man... am rodding my '54 F-100.
Working with kids is great stuff... builds endurance, enthusiasm and energy. Fooling with the truck brings the balancing calm to all that other.

I live in Austin Texas and will turn 56 in less than a month. I worked as a Utility construction manager for the City of Austin for 33 years, spent 4 in the good old US air force where I got to see some really exciting places like lovely downtown Sigon.
Raced late modle stock cars for 14 years then got away from cars and started woodworking but somehow about two years ago I drug up a 37 ford tudor body and started working on it - then hauled in a 46 Chevy pickup and started working on it - then got a 55 Chevy pickup and started working on it. As you can see I have a hard time focusing on one thing so as a result I may never finish anything? But what the hell I like it.
I an now retired but doing Construction Management on select projects.

I'm a senior manager at an engineering design and manufacturing firm that designs and builds automated assembly systems (robotics, fixtures and jigs) for the automotive and other manufacturers with process control requirements.  I used to own a hot rod parts shop called Hill Country Performance (9 years) but sold it in 1999 (2 full time jobs were taking all of the fun out of life and only one of them was putting money on the table).  Been into cars since I was old enough to fart.  Still have my first street rod (34 Plymouth acquired in 1974) and have more projects sitting around the house than I can hope to complete.  At 55, retirement is still a few years away, but I can still have fun today.

At 15 years old to 17 I learned to fix cars in a technical high-school, but never worked on cars as a living. I did different jobs but at 31 decided to change and learn how to work on tool machines.

Now I work as a mechanic in a public research laboratory for 3 years. My work is to draw on a 3D software some parts an make them on a lathe or mill. Each new experiment is different than the previous so I have always news things to do.
It's not a very good paying but safe job because my employer is the government. I have the chance to work 35 hours a week and have 9 weeks of paid vacation every year.
This job let me plenty of free time to work on my projects, actually I just finished to restaure a 1966 renault 16 (the same my dad has when I was a little boy)  and now I started again on the roadster (which is running for 3 years) to replace the TH350 by a Th700, with the goal in mind to drop the gas expense.

One year ago I travelled to California for the second time (first in 1988) and visited everything street-rod relateds places as possible. Next summer I will go to england at the biggest car event in this country (3000 cars)
And think to go again to the states in 2005 if the dollar stay low as is it now!

I left teaching in 1997 and work in a non-teaching role for the College of Education. I no longer direct but I write almost everyday on plays and screenplays. And no, I haven't gotten rich yet!  I have been a car enthusiast since the seventh grade when a kid flunked into our class who had Hot Rod magazines.

Tech Illustrator since about 1983, Graphic Design/Illustrator the last couple of jobs. Jet engine mechanic in the Navy, mechanic manager at a local private garage that has been in business since about 1950, while going to college and a couple of years after. I still help out there when someone is off. I've been laid off looking for a comparable position for a little over a year. Lots of job if I want to drive a couple of hundred miles or relocate. Been doing freelance jobs at home when I can find them. Worked at Rockwell on B1 bomber illustration and lots of other manufacturing and a research company. Last job was at a engineering consulting company that did front end analysis, logistic support analysis and tech manuals. All the managers where retired military officers. What a great place to work, not.
If anyone knows of any tech illustrator work let me know. I've developed illustration and exploded views for AECMA, MIL, ATA and customer formats for service and installation manuals and SGML data modules.
My wife's been really sick for a while so it's a good thing I've been home.
I have a 40 Tudor I bought from a friend.  It was pretty ruff when I got it. Still needs a lot of TLC. I've installed a 3L TPI SBC with a T5 out of an Iroc. Doing bodywork and new floor now. Still need rad, wiring and a few other things before its running. Also helping a buddy build his 37 Chevy streetrod.

I just turned 33, and i'm on my first "serious" career, as a computer tech. I work for a 2 man shop, where we're kinda "jacks of all trades". Everything from fixing simple email problems to setting up and installing 10K servers. Interesting job because of the variety of problems, but frustrating because I have to dig myself out of serious holes pretty often. There's alot of situations where hitting the wrong button will wipe out a year of someone's work. Better yet is when you're trying to salvage someone's info, and if you lose it, they'll probably go out of business. Folks, if you have data you really need, BACK IT UP! Trust me, it's cheap insurance! Good job, hard work, but a good job.

I'm from WV, but been in CA for 2 years. It's an interesting change of pace. I like Cali, but I miss my backwoods and hills. It's worth it for the girl i'm with, that's for sure. Smart, pretty, and good-hearted.

Car wise, I drive a 67 Mustang, with a 302, C4, and 4.11 gears. Pretty fun car, bit expensive to feed. It's a bit of a pain, because everyone and their cousin wants to race me. I just want to get to work, and i'm getting in heads-up runs with Caddy CTS's. I like crusiers, gonna get me a 65 Riv or a 61 T-bird someday. I really want to build a chopped and channeled Model A sedan with a nailhead, and painted metalflake blue.

Anyhow, that's me, and i'm pleased to meet you.

This is getting big. It's almost as big as the saga of running motorcycles on the dunes. I'll try again to tell who I am with-out so many mistakes. My name is Joe Veraldo and I live in Marietta, Ohio. Came here to go to college and never went home. I'm 55 (both Frank and George are older than me) and have been married 36 years. Worked at a chemical plant (Shell) for 15 years before my accident in '93. I was out motorcycle riding an put it down in gravel. Didn't have the sense to tell myself I was hurt so I got back on it. I don't remember going down the second time but that's what they told me 3 months later when I come out of the coma. They also told me that I'd probably never work or drive again. So imediately started bying stuff to make a vehicle I could operate. After 10 years of recooperation I finally got the blessing to drive and now I'm sorting through my stuff with new ideas of what I really need. The time I spend here keeps me off the road and the time I spend walking the dog keeps me out of the garage. GPster (yea, I have one)

Let's see, I retired once from the Air Force Civil Service in 1998, then again from the Army Reserve in 2001, I drove a parts delivery truck for two years then got offered a job with a Government Contractor looking for IT and Engineering folks to work on Air Force contracts.  It's a great job because they pay me to walk around and bs with my old working buddies about what they need in the way of support.  The real great thing about the job is that I'm on an hourly basis so if I run out of leave to go to car shows and races they just quit paying me until I get back.  Sweet!
I do have time to play in my shop with my '34 and '47 Fords and Grandma's old '56 Olds.  I also play a little golf when there isn't three feet of snow on the ground.

I'm thinking I should just post my resume on here...

I'm 36 and have worked in the IT industry for the last 10 years or so. Chucked my job in just before Christmas because I just wasn't happy any more with going nowhere and not enjoying my work.

Currently looking for something new. Contemplating other industries, but it's difficult when all of your experience is in IT. I figure if you've got to spend so much time every day working, you might as well try and do something you enjoy, and I really don't get too excited working with computers.

So, the search is on. I also do some freelance photojournalist stuff for Larry's magazine (Aust Street Rodding) and would love to be able to go further with that, but it's difficult to see a full time job coming out of it. We'll see though...

Married with no kids, although they are definitely in our future... after I get my Hot Rod. :)

I'm a 35 year old self-taught mechanic/body/fabricator. Currently self-employed, working in a buddy's garage, mostly odd hours because of chasing parts during the day or insomnia at night. Friends say I do my best work in the wee hours of the night.

Was in a relationship for the past 7 years, not anymore, other than to maintain the most important part of that relationship, my daughter Shannon. Long-time RRT'ers will remember the baby pool, back when the site was maintained by Cybercruzin.com. Hard to believe I've been hanging out with everybody here all that time, having fun talking cars both online and at the shows. BTW, Shannon turns 6 this Wednesday, we are finally going to go to Chuck E. Cheese for a birthday bash!

Past projects include my mid-motored hotrod experiment, using Eldorado mechanicals, and my '28 Ford 4x4 tudor sedan/truck/roadster project, which was also my daily driver. Current projects are my '75 Kawie H1F chopper project, a '79 Chevy truck with tons of body mods and Caddy 500 powertrain, and of course the '54 Ford Customline tudor that I have dubbed the Kustomsledd (http://www.angelfire.com/extreme3/drchop).

I'm currently residing in the Chesterton, IN area, close to the rest of my family. I hate the winters around here, but it's home and the Indiana Dunes are only a couple miles from my place...

Any of y'all ever get out this neck of the woods, and want to stop by, BS, check out the projects, or need help/repairs...ring me at (219) 926-8802 and ask for Jay.  Does'nt matter if you never met me, if you're on this board you are like family, that's how much I appreciate this board and all who are on it.

I own and operate a street rod fabrication facility in southern Manitoba in western Canada. I have been building streetrods and custom cars since the mid '70's.

In the past, I also operated a agricultural equipment manufacturing company, which was abandoned due to the economic depression in Canadian Agriculture over the past five years.

The market in Canada is small in comparison to the US mainly due to the population  numbers, but with lower living expenses, the end result is fulfilling. Our customer base reaching a radius of 1000 miles to the east and west and dabbles slightly into Minnesota and North Dakota.

I enjoy travelling throughout North America attending street rod events and meeting fellow rodders. That is the spirit of the hobby! I have met some wonderful friends on my journeys, many who are present on this site.

I hope to meet more of you over the next few seasons, providing the authorities will permit my border crossing to the south! rj

Hi all, been lurking here for years, thought I`d take the opportunity to give you some of my background. I am currently 54years old and am currently a NYS Corrections Officer.(2nd career)Years ago I recieved my Associates degree in Civil Technology, worked as a " Field Engineer' for Republic Steel Corp for 13 yrs. It closed down and I recieved my retirement money in a lump sum.($2500)I bounced around as a Project Manager for various companies for 12 years.I took the test and became a Corrections Officer in 94.I`ve always been interested in cars of various styles and types. Back in the 70`s I got into SCCA road racing.Raced in their new class called Showroom Stock,I did that until 1981 with reasonable success. Went to the National run offs at Road Atlanta in `77&78. Finished 4th in the country in 78. I have traded my interest in sports cars to street rods. I am currently building a 39 Pontiac Coupe, I plan on putting it on the road this spring and take it to various cruises in the area and some shows. :D

 I am  am a high school shop teacher - since 1967. Next year is my last. They will be closing down my wood and metal shop and putting in one of those "TECH LABS" where the kids use computers and  don't get dirty. I would love to have the  lathes, mills, bandsaws, welders etc. that will get thrown out. Wonder where kids will learn to work with their hands?
Hope to be working on my 51 Merc. convert. :D

I'll be 49 on the 15th of March. My offical title is Geospatial Systems Architect. But if I said that I play with computer mapping systems it would probably make a lot more sense. Started out as a surveyors assistant in 1974 and after one particularly wet winter swore I'd never work outside again. Been playing with 'puters ever since. To my mind they were the good old days as I was involved with many systems implementations where you were going from paper to digital made you feel like you were really doing something.

Only ever had 3 employers, the second one was a large regional water board and now I work for the Victorian State Government in the Statutory Land Planning area. Don't do much hands on coding these days all project and contract management so having my own sites and learning HTML etc was good therapy for an old programer.

Lucky to have access to lots of "toys" and interesting work and so long as it remains that way I'll stay. Much prefer the development side of the business than the mundane operational side. I am never short of something to do and if it wasn't for my discipline of keeping "to do" lists I'd be in real trouble.

Started with a site for the Australian Street Rod Federation (http://www.asrf.org.au) I have since built many sites for friends and hot rodding businesses, also do a site for Dry Lakes Racers Australia (http://www.dlra.org.au) and created by own little piece of cyberspace at Hot Rod Internet (http://www.hot-rod.com.au)

Went to an industry function last year and there were no less than 7 proteges that I had previously introduced to the wonderful world of geographic information systems who were now out developing / managing systems for a range of organisations. Made me feel real proud, more so than any systems launch.

I'am 58 and live in a suburb of Toronto. Married for 33 years to my first wife and have two grown kids. The other love of my life is my 49 Ford Business Coupe which just came back from it's first visit to the body shop for new sheetmetal. Once the paint is on it will be getting a 351W with AOD and an Explorer rear end. Plan to retire in June 2005 so I can devote the rest of my life to the old girl (the one with wheels).

Retired from  Calif Hwy Patrol, over 400,000 miles on motorcycles in LA area.  My first CHP motor was the last kick start Harley in the LA area, wasn't I lucky.  Anyway, we have 5 kids live in a mountain area out of Fresno.  I have my cars and my wife raises paint horses as her hobby.  My second career is in local gov't where I will take my second retirement shortly.  My wife is the County Animal Control Director for the County (Spay and Neuter *).  My current project is the 51 Kaiser that I have painted myself into a corner with.  I really envy some of you guys and the mechanical backgrounds that you have.  I really would have loved to gotten into the machinist line.  Your knowledge has helped me on this current project.  When I finally retire, I plan to work on my projects and learn more.

Think you have a point here.  True enough that "the wisdom of the marketplace" dictates that every job possible be outsourced to a place where you can pay people a subsistence level wage.  My mind questions how it's good for the economy for no one to have enough money to buy goods, but supposedly people smarter than I have that all figured out.  Still, things need to be fixed and custom work done.  Maybe as the supply of people who can do that dries up over the next generation people who work with their hands can earn a little more scratch and a little more respect.  Seems to me the lack of a decent wage for the skilled trades is how we currently populate those jobs with morons who hook the satellite TV up to the doorbell.

Well, first off Im a newbie here having just discovered the board....

By day, Im a Journeyman Welder (In Canada=schooling required) and I work in the oil and gas industry. Lots of Tig work with aluminum and stainless. Plans for the future are to move into a Machinists trade (schooling reqiured) as my lungs probably resemble charcoal brickets from all the welding ... Welding and Machinist go hand in hand.

By night (when its aint 30 below), I work on several projects here including 35 and 41 Ford Flathead powered cars, and a 41 Studebaker truck (future drag race project).

Am currently negotiating on my next project which is a fully retored 40 Deluxe Tudor. (I havent pryed it out of the fellows hands yet)

If I ever get ahold of the 40, it will be Updated with a 2x2 offy intake and offenhauser heads, tinted glass, lowered front suspension and a set of center line rims.

One year ago I retired from the local Gas and Electric as a Foreman of Underground Locators and Corrosion Control Technicians. I am currently working on my fourth Street Rod. I started with a T Bucket then went to a 29 2dr Sedan and then to a 32 Hi Boy Roadster which I traded for my current project, a 32 2dr all steel sedan. This one here has been a real learning experience. The guy I traded with definitely got the best of the deal. Hopefully I am ready now for the upcoming street rodding season as I have just been offered a part time job back in the Dig Safe Industry.

I've been reading this site for a long time and this seemed like the perfect
time to post and introduce myself. I teach Auto Body at the ND State College of Science in Wahpeton. I do upholstery work in a shop in my backyard during off hours and summers. I've been into cars since I was 8 years old (54 now) and was into hot rods under my late brothers arm at an early age. The sad thing is that some of those old cars I've had were pretty new when I had them.

Current driver is a mild custom 63 1/2 Galaxie and after being without a hot rod for 5 years am building a new Model A with early 60's flavor right now. And there is usually some nice rod sitting in my shop for an interior or top.

It's always great seeing what's going on at the RRT.

Check out my website if you get a chance:

Then again we sometimes have the best times around here sharing things that didn't work.   :D

Here are some recent pics that haven't been posted to my site yet. One is a Glide 50/50 seat I just finished in Ultra Leather that goes into a Rod Bods 32 Roadster that is being built at Hot Rods and Trim in Mooreton, ND.
I'm currently making a headliner and trim panels in the yellow 41 coupe in the backround.

The other two are my own current project - a 1929 Sport Coupe that will be early 60's style. I had a set of 1960 Ford small hubcaps and always wanted to put them on a rod with chrome reverse wheels. So I'm spending thousands to use up a set of worthless hubcaps. Typical rodder stuff.....

Hopefully I can attach them....

Ryan-  I sold my 38 chev cpe and ran across this one in a garage in the mountains here where I live.  It is a 51 Kaiser 2 door.  It was grandpas car, he bought it new and when he died in 1964, they put it in the garage on blocks where it sat until I got it.  Took it home, poured gas down the carb, jumped it with a 12v and it started right up.  Not a ding or dent in the car, just the damage from sitting for almost 40 years.  I have subframed it with an S10 stub (Mistake!!) and have a 350 with a 700r going in it.  Just finished the chasis last weekend, now am letting the body down to see what I have to do to the firewall.  This is the newest streetrod I have ever owned, it is so ugly it is kinda neat.  Has the heart shaped windshield with the sunvisor.

Me?

I'm a senior executive for a large multi national car maker.

My department is responsible for product training and publications.  Thus we live with each new car from concept until the end of it's life in order that we can teach everybody who needs to know anything about them whatever it is they needs to know.  From how to fix it, to how to sell it and what colour the bolt that holds the phooofer valve in the whatzit was before it faded to the colour it is now.

I'm also currently working with a small team on a special project' which will be revealed next year.

For fun, I like to play with old cars, race sprintcars, dragsters or hot rods, take photos, publish stories, draw twisted lines on things, build model cars and a whole lot more.  Usually all my leisuretime activities are somehow linked back to my passion for stuff with wheels and an internal combustion engine.  However, being a full blooded male person, I'm also a believer that sex, not racing or cruising IS the most fun you can have in a car.

retirement would allow me to do many more things I currently struggle to find time for, however having recently given the subject a great deal of consideration, I'm not yet ready for that or the lifestyle that accompanies it.  However, I have 'slowed down' a bit, in order to maintain my well being and avoid premature retirement or worse.

PS - I also like to travel to caar events all over the planet and give the locals plenty of grierf..

Hello, my name is Steve and I am an RRTer and a HAMBer to.  How did this happen to me?  I came from a nice family in California.  My parents did their very best to raise me up right.

But, when I was 17 I rebelled and joined the Army.  After 13 years squandering my youth in the flesh pots of Europe, Asia, and even Kings Cross I got out and did four years worth of partying in two semesters at the University of Tampa.

Broke and in desperate need of a gig I took a simple little Civil Service job at nearby McDill AFB.  It was just to tide me over until something better came along.  26 years later I retired.  It just happend.

Along the way I owned a Model A coupe, a Porsche 912, a Corvette, a Porsche 356, a Volkswagen, a Mazda rotery pickup, a Porsche 550 spyder kit car, a Chevy S-10, a V8 Dodge Dakota, and a 32 Ford roadster.  All of them modified in some way.  And I was always subscribing to Car and Driver, Hot Rod, Street Rodder and other magazines.  In my heart I dreamed about building a real California hot rod.  The kind I lusted after when I was a kid.  But I was spending all my time and money on women and strong drink and waisting the rest.  There was no time or money left for a real hot rod.

My partying days came to an abrupt end when I was 42.  My work brought me to Blythville AFB in rural Arkansas.  You would have thought I would know better, all that experience, but I made the mistake of asking the wrong girl to dance.  Faster than you can say "SooooooEeeeeeeePig" I was cooked meat.

The good side of this is that my career took off and money started to collect in our bank accout.  Not a lot, but enough so that when I retired we could build our (her) dream house, my shop, her swimming pool, and my roadster.

Life is as good as your friends and that is why I am proud to be an RRTer and a HAMBer to.

I'm a 43 yo father of four,(not all to the same woman), and in my spare time I am a computer systems admin and techo at a local school, kindy to year 10.

I spent most of my early employed life in the tyre and wheel sales industry and have been playing with cars all of my life.

I now have a interest in pre48 hotrods and spend lots of time in other peoples sheds helping them get theirs finished, and drinking their beer, thanks Choco :D .

I don't waist time on my own projects anymore, I just get them finished in as short a time as possible and then drive the doors off of them.

I have been a Special Education teacher for the last 30 years, coached Special Olympics, and regular ed. basketball, and I AM RETIRING AT THE END OF THIS SCHOOL YEAR.  I had a few cars when younger but got out of the hobby for a while.  Started building cars again about 15 years ago.  Now I can build a few more and would like to try and make a few bucks at it, but will probably get a part time job with no stress and no wierd parents or administrators.

Hello, my name is Dolly.

I'm the love child of one Rayvyn and a Miss Barbie, following an incidious relationship as the result of too much booze and The Rayvin spiking my mother's drinks.

Nine months later I was born in Noo Joisy, a few years later, after a life of torture and depravity at the hands of my incestuous father, he dumped me in an abandoned parking lot on a wet misserable August night whhilst attending the NSRA Street Rod nationals.

Fortunately I was rescued by a gentle and kind hearted, caring and sharing Australian, who just happened to be passing by at the time.  He took me home and nursed me back to health before getting my mind straigtened out so I could finally lead a normal life.  Since this good fortune befell me, I've grown as a person and prospered, making freinds all around the world and developing my own business interests in the fashion and publishing industry.

Unfortunately, stunning looks fame have their problems and recently I've been stalked by a poor deluded soul who thinks he is my boyfreind.  My real boyfreind is actually a very successful race car driver and once I have finsihed my summer vacation at home with Carps and his Aussie buddies, I'lll be heading back to Europe to join my beau, Ted Shoemender (AKA Shooee) on the F1 circuit.

The good news is I may be on my honeymoon come August and we plan to join Carps for his tour of US rodding events where I'm looking forward to meeting you and catching up with old freinds.  Just so long as that nasty Rayvyn doesn't show his ugly face.

I have several projects: 37 Plymouth 2 dr sedan, 65 Fairland 2 dr sedan, 39 Plymouth PU, a couple of Ts, etc.

If any of you need a Ford 9" tracloc, drop me a line.  That's how I make money for my car habit!

Im an electronics tech by trade, and now work as a renewable energy consultant.
I have my own business and design and build sepcialist alternative power systems using solar energy, wind power etc for domestic, business, industry and government. I also repair and rebuild systems that others have done that didnt work properly (thats the bit I hate the most - fixing other peoples rubbish).
Ive been brought up with cars, helping my recently departed father fixing them from a very young age. I built a T-bucket in the mid 80s, sold it to go motor racing for a few years where I earned my nickname "Mr Cool' due to my driving style, and its stuck with me ever since. I then got a mortgage, got married and had 3 kids and thats when I got back into rodding, much more affordable than racing. Ive met alot of people and made many new friends over the last few years from all over the country.
I did however manage to keep some of my cars through all that, for which I am lucky.

I have been around the RRT for a while, so maybe I should do an intro too.

I don't know. I am not sure if I want my name to be associated with people who are in the sheep flocking biz, mow lawns naked, play with dolls or use the "spilled lacquer thinner on my self" excuse to flash the housekeeper, and the Downunder tree hugging bunch are here too.

Oh well, I guess it's time I attempt to climb up the social ladder a rung.

My name is Carl Brunson and I am 55 years old.
I have spent my life welding, grinding, sanding body filler & primer on cars of all kinds.
I have a shop in Las Vegas specializing in doing this.
Occasionally I get to paint and polish a car too.

Well, now you know who I am.

Holy ancient posts, Batman!!

I'm a jack of all trades, master of none.  :P

I've done numerous jobs over my life, then 2 years ago I decided to start my own business. I offer various services from deliveries, moving, lawn care, snow clearing, etc. Business has been good enough that I was finally able to afford to build myself a workshop!  :D

I also haul junk away from homes and businesses, sort of like the 1-800-GOT-JUNK guys. That's been the most interesting part of my job...it's amazing what some people throw out!

I had to rent storage space for some of the stuff that was too good to toss away. Once a year I hold a garage sale and sell off as much as I can. I keep enough of the money raised to pay for the storage and the rest gets donated to local charities.

In the elevator business, the B44 code is almost Canada wide. But, each province may have some different rules. Nothing drastic though. The IUEC (elevator constructor union) does their own schooling. It is getting more complcated every year. I'm happy to be retired.

Bob... In some trades, by law ,you have to be enrolled as an apprentice or be a journeyman to hold employment longer than a few months. Electricians are that way. In other trades there are no stipulations,as in machining. There are many employers that are only allowed to hire outside their union membership when they specify a journeyman status as a job requirement and none are within the union membership. This would be for companies that do not do that specific trade as their business but rather employ tradesmen as part of their maintenance department. The interprovincial red seal is recognized Canada wide as each province has input into what aspect of knowledge should be tested in the examination process. I know a few machinists who are much more knowledgeable than me in this trade but for whatever reason did not finish or start into the trade certification process. To have your "ticket " does not make you a better tradesman than someone else but it proves your abilities to a nationally recognised standard.I have never had to fill out a job application for a machinist position since I got my "ticket".Simply stating over the phone that I have  my ticket has always been enough  .I went to University to get a teaching degree and was credited with the equivalent of a degree for my journeyman status. This cut one year out of my time at university to get a teaching degree and I recieve higher pay as a shop teacher because I am then pay classified as having a second degree .The journeymans exam in my trade required you to have a documented 8000 hours of experience before you could be tested. I wrote a 3 1/2 hour written exam with a pass /fail at 70%. I also had to do a 6 1/2 hour practical exam with the same 70% pass/fail threshold. I always take the time in class with my students to tell them about the journeymans program and the different ways you can become enrolled.

That sounds like an excellent program... It brings a new meaning & pride to the
word " Journeyman" ...Simular to the "Old days" ....
Too many people reach "journeyman" status today by "putting in time" on the job .. :(
I too went through a 4 year apprentice program "Back in the Day" to become a Mechanic ... Back then there were no "Technicians " or "Specialists" in car & truck repair ...I was very  fortunate to be taught how to fix "machines" .. ... As one of my mentors once told me ..." Some machines have wheels ...Some don't ...We fix them all "...

A very wise statement indeed ......

Thank You for teaching others & passing on the trade ... );b(

Bob......
