He had massive bleeding in his brain and was life-flighteed to Las Vegas. There was nothing the doctors could do.
My heartfelt condolences to his family and legions of friends.

Hello everyone---This is Jay's wife Gay. I'm so, so sorry that all of you found out the way you did. Writing all of you was on my list of things to do, but I seem kind of paralysed {wrong sp,}. He died Sun. Nov. 15 of a massive brain bleed. They air lifted him from here to Vegas. Our daughter and son{inlaw{ live there and were able to meet the helicopter and walk into the hospital with him. Deb,daughter and I got there about 3 hours later. He was gone probably before we got there but they kept him on life support as long as we need him. Our pregnant granddaughter and boyfriend were able to be there, too. Our other two grandchildren live out of state. We thank all of you for your messages today. I especially liked the ones about him driving on the heavenly roads. C9 used that name because our last name is Carnine. We will be reading further posts. We are so deeply sorry for the loss of such an awesome, wise, loving, super intelligent man.
This hits me hard. I last talked to him a few months ago. I had been through Kingman several times lately but had no time to stop. I will miss him. Go in peace Jay.
Godspeed to a rodder's rodder
:( :( :( :( :( :(
I enjoyed reading his stories probably almost as much as he obviously enjoyed writting them. Whether he wrote fact or fantasy it was enjoyable. That will be missed. GPster
Jay was very helpfull for all the technicall problems I had to try on my 32 roadster. He took the time to answer me in this forum several times a few years ago. Even I never had the opportunity to meet him, I'm sure he was a very good personn. He sent me to France, for free, 4 hubcaps that are still on my car. The book he wrote, California Hot Rodder is on a shelf with a few books that like the most. It's a very big miss.
Gilles
Rest in peace Jay. God bless. I always wanted to meet you and regret that it didn't happen. We'll all miss you deeply.
Charlie
I never got to meet Jay, but I feel that I knew him well. I always read anything that he had to say because I knew that it was well worth the time. I feel a deep personal loss at his passing and I pray that God will comfort his family. God bless you my friend and thanks for being a part of my life.

I am numb.
Although I did not have the pleasure of knowing Jay personally, I read all of his postings because of his well-written, informative answers. My condolences to his family and friends. Our loss is heaven's gain. RIP Jay.
sad to read this.
I never met Jay in person... we chatted via the internet and i sent him some t-400 parts a few years back for the car he was building.
Condolences to Gay and her family for the loss of Jay way too soon.... Jay always called his wife Sweetie when he told a story that included her

What a terrible loss! Jay had the talent to let you understand who he was and allow you to feel close. I never met him but I knew him well from his writings. He will be sorely missed.
My condolences go out to his family.
A terrible loss.
Godspeed Jay.

What an incredibly shocking thing to read, I'm completely stunned. I never met him in person yet felt that we could sit down to have a burger and a beer and I'd enjoy his company as much as any old friend. I read everything he posted and eagerly awaited the next thing.
My thoughts and prayers are with Jay and all he left behind. First and foremost that means his family, but also all of his friends and even those who will feel his loss here. The best ones leave a big footprint.
This stuff hits like a ton of bricks. The last I remember he was commenting on Frank's steering column work. RIP my man.
*! That news just about knocked me off my chair. I am so sorry to hear of this, and extend my sincere sympathies to his family and friends.
I always enjoyed reading his writings of his growing up in SoCal, and knew of a lot of the places he wrote about because I grew up there, too, in the same times. We also shared a common background in our employment; we worked for the same company for about the same length of time, and retired at the same time from the same occupation - but we never met in person.
I will miss seeing his postings.
Jay .. thanks for the writings ....
World wide known Rodder n Author.
RIP
Gee I come on here today cos I figured I forgot to come on here for a while...still very stunned & saddened. A real Knight from the Roundtable, still have a C9 Machine Sticker on my ute that Jay sent me years ago. We used to send each other T Shirts every so often but with a big life change here we weren't contacting each other as often...certainly not as often as we should.
Heck of great bloke, sadly he'll be greatly missed but like other greats of rodding (known & well known) they'll live on in one form or another, he will through his books. Got both his and not sure if he finished the others...
A good down to earth fellow that showed ordinary people are more than capable of extraordinary things.
Vale - Jay Carnine. We're poorer for the loss, but richer for the gains his presence gave.
So Sad
I too am feeling numb.

As soon as Carps shot this picture he joined me and Jay in the roadster and we blasted off towards the orange groves, where Jay simply stopped in the middle of the road, got out and said to Carps, "Your turn."
That's a memory I know Carps will never, ever forget and I can still see the smile of both their faces as Jay told him not to hold back on the throttle.

I think there's quite a few of those stickers attached to different things around the world.
Here's one of mine.

Some of the things that would turn up in the snail mail after an email discussion or a thread here on any topic where always fun. I became reluctant to let on my ignorance of some things USA on occasions, because Jay would always pick up on it and a sample, often two or three, would appear in my mailbox soon after.
I once mentioned that I would have liked some Olds Fiesta caps for my '33. Soon after, a large package appeared with a note, saying that he was sorry they were not Fiestas but the plain version, Fiestas minus the tri bar flippers. And as only Jay could do, there were five mint caps in the box, because he figured I'd need one for the spare wheel hanging off the back of the car.
Jay was also kind of amused that I thought his '49 Plymouth Buisiness Coupe "Miss Plymouth" was kinda cool. Apparently it wasn't. Anyhow, one day a package arrives telling me that she had moved on to a new home, but before she went, he removed one of the license plates.
I have quite a few plates on my garage walls, but theres one section of wall that's reserved for the really special ones. These are the plates that have a story attached and in the pic below, some of the stories may be obvious whilst one of the less obvious is the blue California plate from Miss Plymouth. An old license plate might not mean much to most folks but this ne now means a great deal more to me than it did yesterday.

There's so many things to say about Jay, but I'm finding it difficult to write them as I still can't believe I won't be seeing him later next year as we had planned.
Heart breaking news.
My condolences to Jay's family and everyone here.
My C9 machine sticker will be making me tear up for weeks to come too.
Having just read Carps post I had one thought that made me smile. I'll bet Jay could have written a post three times as long.
I think I'll re-read Pinky and California Hot Rodder
Mike
Wow, stunned here, I always read everything Jay wrote, on any forum. He knew it all without being a know it all. His stories will be missed.
I remember meeting Jay for the first time at a taco stand in Covina on the first jaunt of a hot rod and hot cuisine week before the LA Roadster's show one year about a decade ago, organized by Don (DRD57) Bob (hotrodbob) and Frank (Enjenjo) before tearing down the I-10 to visit Mort's "museum" and HopUP office out in Riverside.
Jay was already there downing a breakfast burrito when I got there and I walked up and he just started talking about something we had been discussing a couple days before on the internet just as if we were life long buddies who actually had been talking about it in person.
I'm going to miss him.

Very terrible loss. Condolences go out to his family.
Terrible thing to hear
Our condolences to Jay's family and close friends
He helped my out so much on my 1st hotrod and never complained or asked for anything in return.
I'll miss him
Godspeed Jay
My condolences to the family. I'm going to miss him. I liked his posts and loved his stories. I believe in going suddenly and not suffering. I hope he didn't. I had planned to stop and meet face to face next year. Out of time again.
Truly a sad day. My condolences to family and friends.
I meant to buy his 2 books some time ago. I ordered both last night.
Prayers up for Jay and the family
Vance
I never met him either, but also enjoyed his stories. My condolences to his family.
Man that's really sad news. I enjoyed his stories. Condolences to his family. Jbird
Seems only right that I send my condolences to C9's family here on the RRT where I first 'met' him. Never got the chance in person, but he was one of the originals.
RIP :(
Hate to see him leave and many have been touched by his short time on this Earth... but now he's cruising Gods Highways... "Ride In Peace Jay"!!!
Well I'm a victom of "lack of timing". I ordered C9's book through inter-libraray loan and they called me yesterday that it was in. I picked it up today on my way out of town. I'm at my daughter's house to see grand daughter's Christmas Show. Tomorrow is schedualed for a trip to "Home Depot" so she can do her monthly craft project and I think I'll also get involved with our son-in-law's "Buy new screen wire for front porch" project. I won't be able to stay up late and read because I'll have to be rested for the drive home. Last year on the way home after this show is when I wrecked my truck. I brought the good car this year and I'll rest easier after I pass the 23 mile marker. Looked at C9's book quickley and read the dedication to his wife. I'm sure now that I'll understand the rest of it. GPster
My two books arrived this week. I'm really looking forward to reading them. I feel sad that I could have read them a few years ago and then had the privilege to ask the author if I had any questions.
Pinky is an AWESOME read and my favorite.
She is actually a real person and lives in Hawaii now.....a fact that Jay won't be able to share himself with you but he and I had many discussions regarding her.
Wow, what can I say. I'm in shock. Like many of you here ,I never met Jay. I will say that I felt I knew him through his writings and posts.
I recently returned here and to the hobby. When I did I wondered about Jay (C9) and what he was up to.
Way back when I went through my divorce and some low times in my life, I really enjoyed his writings and general outlook on life.
I think they helped me through some tough times in a small way.
You will be greatly missed Jay, and I am saddened by your passing. Hope your duece made it up there with you.
Larry.
