Rodder's Roundtable / Krown Rust Protection?
September 12, 2022, 03:31:53 PM
I'm interested in hearing from people who have opinions on Krown. It's available mostly in Canada but there is a couple shops in Michigan.

I've never driven my Pontiac Vibe in the winter but just got a new pickup so the Vibe will be a winter car from now on. It has less than 100k miles so l plan to keep it a few more years and want to keep the rust away if I can.

Rodder's Roundtable / Airbag crash sensor question
March 18, 2018, 05:42:50 PM
Not a hotrod question but someone might be able to answer it. The car I bought that hit a deer doesn't have signs of the airbags going off but the airbag dash light is on.

I took the bag out of the steering wheel and it looks good but while working on the front end I found that one impact sensor is gone (wires look ripped apart but not touching) the other sensor has a cracked housing. I took it apart and it's a solid state crash sensor (TRW)...no mechanical parts, just a circuit board.  I need to replace both sensors and my question is, can I use junkyard parts or do I need to buy new. Google says the mechanical sensors reset themselves but I can't find much about the solid state sensors.

I know I need to remove the control module from under the dash to see what condition it is in but haven't done that yet.

Rodder's Roundtable / OEM vs aftermarket headlights
March 05, 2018, 11:10:29 AM
A couple of weeks ago I got another '09 Pontiac Vibe that hit a deer and am chasing parts. I found a decent same color hood and bumper fascia but good OEM headlights are hard to find. Most used ones have mounting tabs broken off or they're scratched and foggy. New OEM are pricey.

Does anyone have experience with aftermarket light assemblies? Some are listed as CAPA certified and some aren't. Google searches about quality give me mixed results.

I might keep this car and want lights that will last a while. OEM, CAPA certified, or el cheapo ebay aftermarket??

Rodder's Roundtable / Cranked - no start
May 10, 2017, 02:45:01 PM
I was going to take my '01 E-150 van (5.4) van out of winter storage today and it wouldn't fire. It cranked real good. Since I just had coils and plugs put in I thought it might be fuel even tho the fuel pump ran and primed as normal.

I came in and did some googling to diagnose it and the first thing I tried was a small shot of starting fluid. It started right up and ran just fine. I drove it from the barn to the driveway, washed it and then drove it down the road with no more problems...not a miss or a hiccup. It starts quickly every time now.  Is there something I should be checking?  It's always ran perfectly before this.

This was posted on a motorcycle forum but no one can figure out what it is, and the original poster doesn't know either. It was in a box he got at an auction. I thought with all the genius here, someone might know. Any ideas? The keys are just to show the size.

Rodder's Roundtable / HF lawsuit
March 16, 2017, 03:22:46 PM
It appears that there is a proposed settlement in the class action lawsuit against Harbor Freight that was filed last year for improperly advertising merchandise at a "sale" or "compare at" price when the same items had not been sold at the advertised regular or "compare at" price for at least 28 of the preceding 90 days.

If the details I've read are true there's a substantial amount of money to be returned to customers. I haven't absorbed the details but there are a number of forums and news sites discussing it.

If you've bought stuff there from April 8, 2011 to December 15, 2016 and have receipts or other proof, it sounds like it might be worth your while to check this out if this turns out to be as it seems.

I assume there are people here that this might affect so I thought I'd post it. Personally, I've spent around $2500 during the time this covers....and I've kept my receipts. :D

Here's a quote explaining some details from a thread on SlickDeals shopping forum:

"Harbor Freight Class Action Settlement - Get cash back or gift cards for purchases made from 4/8/11-12/15/16!!
Harbor Freight just settled a class action suit due to falsely advertising the "regular price" of items, and therefore falsely claiming the amount that you save when an item is "on sale". Full details of the case and settlement, as well as instructions on submitting a claim, can be found here: http://www.nationalsalepricesettlement.com.

The options to claim damages are as follows:

OPTION A. Customers who have itemized Harbor Freight receipts reflecting one or more purchases between April 8, 2011 and December 15, 2016 with a "you saved" amount reflected on their receipts can submit copies of those receipts and elect to receive either 20% in cash, or 30% in a Harbor Freight gift card, of the total "you saved" amount listed on their receipts, excluding any amounts reflecting free items or items that were later returned.
EXAMPLE: If you have receipts showing total "savings" on multiple items totaling $480, you have the option of getting 20% cash back ($96) or 30% ($144) on a Harbor Freight gift card.

OPTION B. Customers who have credit or debit card statements reflecting one or more purchases at Harbor Freight between April 8, 2011 and December 15, 2016 can submit copies of those statements and elect to receive either 10% in cash, or 12% in a Harbor Freight gift card, of the total Harbor Freight purchases on their credit or debit card statement(s), excluding any amounts reflecting items that were later returned.
EXAMPLE: If you have credit card statements showing $2,400 in purchases at Harbor Freight, you have the option of getting 10% ($240) cash back or 12% ($288) on a Harbor Fright gift card.

OPTION C. All other customers who made purchases at Harbor Freight between April 8, 2011 and December 15, 2016 may submit one declaration, signed under penalty of perjury, stating that they purchased an item from Harbor Freight (other than a free or later-returned item) that was advertised with a higher reference price (e.g., "reg. $XXX," "only $XXX," or "comp. at $XXX") adjacent to a lower current offering price, and that they do not have itemized Harbor Freight receipts or credit or debit card statements of their Harbor Freight purchases. Customers submitting this declaration will receive one $10 Harbor Freight gift card.
This one is pretty self explanatory. "

...and here's a link to the thread if you want to read discussion.

Rodder's Roundtable / Battery drain on 01 Taurus
November 13, 2016, 07:19:29 PM
This is my winter daily driver and if I don't disconnect the battery in the summer it goes dead. Today I decided to check for amp draw with my multimeter and pulling fuses. Fuse 16 (Flasher and GEM Power, Integrated Control Panel [ICP] Power, RCC Memory, Cluster) is drawing about 1.36 Amps. This is after sitting for an hour after running, key out, doors closed, & nothing plugged into the cigarette lighter sockets.

Does anyone know how to diagnose it further to find the actual culprit? The fuse description is almost greek to me but I do know that I can't just run without the fuse.

I ran across this homegrown test a guy did with 46 different products, mostly gun oils, to see which brand offered the best corrosion protection, lubrication, & no reaction to non metal components.

The two oils I use on guns didn't even make it past 24hrs without beginning to rust...guess I'm a sucker for marketing.  Samples with WD-40 'Specialist' Corrosion Inhibitor still hadn't started to rust at over 500hrs.

I thought some here might find it interesting.  http://www.dayattherange.com/?page_id=3667

Rodder's Roundtable / RIP John Moffet
March 31, 2014, 08:24:56 PM
John Moffet, a local street rodder passed away on his way back to Michigan after wintering in Florida.  John was a little older than me but we went to high school together and, nicknamed "Pug", he was the Fonze to those of us that looked up to his ability to build hot rods.  He has been the Michigan State Rep for the NSRA for many years and was a co-founder of the Southern Michigan Street Rod Assn in 1967.  He lived rodding and spent much of his life sharing and encouraging that lifestyle with others.  He will be missed by many of us.

Rodder's Roundtable / Inexpensive tubing bender?

Rodder's Roundtable / Shoei helmet deal
January 10, 2014, 01:57:00 PM
I don't know how many people here need a helmet for their various activities but Shoei RF1100 is on sale for $250 at Competition Acccessories.  That's a real good price for a fiberglass, DOT, SNELL M2010 full face helmet.  Their bargain room has some good deals too.

No, I don't own the company.

Rodder's Roundtable / Towing in overdrive
December 22, 2013, 10:23:01 PM
I do a lot of towing with all my vehicles and they are all automatics with overdrive.   I have a number of trailers and match the weight I tow to the capabilities of each of my vehicles.  I tend to keep the trans in OD if there isn't a strain but in hilly areas I try to anticipate when the shift to direct will happen and do it manually.    Once in a while I get caught off guard and the trans will shift before I do it manually.   Am I hurting the trans?

I know the common recommendation is to not tow in overdrive but I've towed in OD for many years without any tranny problems.  I change fluid and flush about every 40-50K miles.  I'm just wondering what you experts might say.  Gas mileage is considerably lower if I don't use OD.

Rodder's Roundtable / Auburn auction
August 29, 2013, 08:59:21 PM
I'm watching the classic car auction at Auburn, IN on TV and the prices cars are selling for is quite cheap in my opinion.  I've got a couple of questions.  Are cars selling for less lately?  I haven't really been paying attention and am putting my pickup up for sale soon.  Just curious.  Also, how much does it cost to be a bidder at an auction like that?   Do you have to be a dealer or can a Joe Blow like me bid?

This isn't really about cars but it sort of is.  A shopping forum I go to has a thread about free 3'x6' vinyl banners (+$15 shipping).  I can think of lots of uses at car shows, etc so I thought I'd post.  These deals don't usually last very long but maybe it's still active and someone can use a banner.  Here's a link to the forum where there are details(site is Slick deals).  http://tinyurl.com/co55ozv

Rodder's Roundtable / HF blast cabinet
March 05, 2013, 07:42:46 PM
I'll bet someone here has one.  I'm thinking about buying the 40 lb ($200) one and have read lots of reviews that say to assemble it with silicone caulk everywhere.  Any other tips or warnings? Will a shop vac work as a dust catcher?  Can I use sand or aluminum oxide?  The manual warns against them for health reasons.  Are quality gloves and tips readily available?  Is there a better brand for around that cost?

Rodder's Roundtable / Bending 6061-t6 aluminum sheet?
February 18, 2013, 03:20:50 PM
I'm making a tail light bracket for one of my dirt bikes and want to use a piece of 6061-t6 aluminum that I already have.  I need to make two bends.  One is 90 degrees and the other is about 10 deg.  I googled it and some of the answers are, can't do it, anneal it, can do it, bend fast before it work hardens, bend it slow, use a large bend radius, use 5052, & more.  I thought I'd ask you guys....the experts.

If I want to use the material I have I'm thinking I should anneal the 90 deg bend area.  That bend will be gusseted at each end so if it's softer I don't think it will compromise the bracket.  I can't easily change the bend radius on my homemade bracket and it is pretty sharp.

I've got a lot of this material so it's a potential for future bracketry and such.

Pics below are:  practice cold bend (questionable), my brake, closeup of brake radius,  and a mockup of the bracket.  Suggestions are welcome.

Rodder's Roundtable / Miracle fixes in a bottle
January 03, 2013, 02:00:46 PM
I've never been one to believe the marketing hype I've heard my whole life about secret formula fix-its for cars.  The first one I remember was STP, then the teflon additives, magnetic fields on the fuel line, and so on.  JC Whitney had a bunch of them.  Some of that stuff might work but I've never seen any concrete evidence amongst people I know.  There's lots of believers spending lots of money, and I've tried a couple but never experienced the miracles they promised me.

Lately a few believers I know have talked about Seafoam.  Well I just couldn't see paying $7 for a can but 3 weeks ago Menards had some CRC Motor Treatment on sale for $1.99 a can.  It made the same claims as Seafoam, had similar warnings, and the can was the same shape so I picked up a can.

My '01 Taurus winter beater has been running a constant code for the last 4 years that I've ignored, P0401, which is restricted EGR flow.  I was told carbon was the culprit.  The car ran ok except for a little hesitation at around 40-55mph and the lazy side of me could live with that.  Anyway, I dumped the CRC in the gas tank with about 8 gallons in it.  I forgot about it for a while then noticed the check engine light was off...and it hasn't come back on.  It could be a coincidence but it appears the stuff worked.

Now I don't know what to do, there are so many miracles out there just waiting for me......

Rodder's Roundtable / 115mm bolt circle question
October 15, 2009, 08:44:38 PM
When I scrapped a Buick Lesabre I kept the 115mm donut spare.  Will it work as a spare for my 4.5" (114.3mm) hub trailers?

The lug nuts probably won't seat properly in the wheel but it seems like it should should work long enough to get the trailer somewhere to fix the flat.  The center has plenty of clearance.

I'm too lazy to go out in the snowy rain to try it so I'm staying in where it's warm and asking you guys.   8)

Rodder's Roundtable / Tire store review
October 02, 2009, 01:15:17 AM
I've been wanting to get some inexpensive alloy wheels and tires for my daily driver.  I looked on the "Tire Rack" website and they had a lot of choices so I drove to their distribution center in South Bend, Indiana today to do some "look and feel" shopping.  Man, I was impressed.  The place is a new half a million square foot facility in a cornfield. The lobby is a showroom with racks and racks of nice wheels.  It took about 45 minutes to decide what I wanted.   The guy that helped me knew a lot and made me feel like I was an important customer.   I liked that.

I pulled my car into one of the 30+ stalls.  The tech was friendly and we talked for a couple minutes.   The waiting room had a complete glass wall that looked out over the shop.  It was interesting to watch the guys work.  They had a good system going. There were some pretty nice cars came through too.

It's an American family owned business and I was impressed.
#26
....what would you get if your priorities were reliability, cost, gas mileage, and ability to tow 1500 lbs?

Now that I'm retired I need dependable daily driver.  The transmission on my '01 Taurus is acting funny and I think I smell antifreeze in the defroster.

I rode along with Sue today to take her Rav4 in for an oil change and a checkup today . While we were waiting I strolled around the lot.  Even Toyotas have cashback now.

I was thinking that maybe with the economy screwed up and GM close to going  broke, right now it might be a good time to check on a new car.

Any suggestions?

Rodder's Roundtable / Grease gun couplers
October 22, 2008, 02:48:56 PM
I have a hopefully simple work related question and I'm sure someone here can help.

We are designing a clutch housing that requires a grease hose to be pulled through as the transmission is being assembled to the engine.  In the test cell we are currently using a standard grease gun coupler to hold onto the zerk in the hose while we pull it thru the clutch housing as the tranny input shaft is aligning into the clutch.  The problem is the grease gun coupler doesn't hold onto the zerk as well as we would like.  It pops off sometimes before we want it to and we don't want people reaching in there for any reason.

The question:  Is there a coupler that is a quick connect type like an air fitting that will lock onto a standard zerk until you manually disconnect it?  Diameter can't be much larger than a standard coupler.

I can probably find something but I thought you guys might know right away.

....not the best quality but here's a couple of pics.

Does anyone know how to get to the bulb of the front turn signal on an '01 Lesabre.  A friend at work, who is pretty mechanically inclined, has one and says there isn't any obvious way to access the bulb.  The lens doesn't screw off and you can't get to it from behind....it's boxed in.  My thought is that you might have to remove the headlight to get access.

There's got to be a pretty simple answer so I told him I'd ask.

Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure if everyone is aware that the RRT has other forums to check out.  If you use this link http://www.roddingroundtable.com/forums/index.php to access the RRT you will see the entire index of forums.  The Throne Room, for instance, is for off topic conversations and can be very interesting.

If you weren't aware of other parts to the RRT please check them out.  For unregistered lurkers you will have to register to have access to everything but please do, and join in.  :D

I've been busy since I got back from Indy but finally got some time to post a few pictures I took.

It was a great weekend in spite of a little....well, a LOT of rain on Saturday morning.  It was real nice hanging out with every one no matter what we were doing.  Some of us don't get together very often.

Charlie giving John (WZJUNK) a ride in the Whisky Ridge Special.

Bob K's negative camber.

Bob showing his dirty hands from working so hard.

Being the resident Gnome, Bob wasn't quite tall enough to see in the hood.

A few people got together at Culbertson's shop for an open house with fantastic food and lots of liquid refreshments.

MOJUNK's Junk Bro's truck at the open house.

Some vintage circle track stuff on display.

Drag racing was going on all day long.

This was a coincidence.  I parked in exactly the same spot that Charlie's son's car was parked when the light pole fell on it a couple of weeks ago.  I had no idea I was at the same motel until Charlie and I talked about it.

Rodder's Roundtable / OMG, I made it
March 07, 2008, 09:10:35 PM
If the subject sounds a little dramatic I guess it's cuz I'm still amazed that I'm home.

I drove to Detroit today (135 miles) with hopes of going to the GM Heritage Center tour and Autorama.  I made the GM tour but not Cobo.

On the drive over this morning the Buick was skipping a heart beat every once in a while.  It was getting worse the more I drove but I was almost there so I kept going.  When I left the Heritage Center I was headed to Cobo Hall in downtown Detroit during the beginning of rush hour and the car was just plain cutting out for a couple of seconds every 5 or 6 miles....like it was losing spark.  I decided to head for home and it kept getting worse.   The more I drove, the more often it burped until it just plain puked on the busy interstate about 85 miles from home.  I popped the hood and poked around pulling wires and stuff but nothing looked bad...as if I could tell.   I tried to restart it.....nothing.  Got back out, poked some more, tried it again and it started.  It was still missing, and every few miles it would kill completely, but after a 10-20 minute wait I could start it again.  The minutes it was running kept getting shorter until the time by the side of the road was longer than the time running.  It was cold and windy and getting dark.  I probably should have pulled off the highway but I had the dream I'd somehow make it home.  Like the title of this post implies, I did make it home but the last 20 miles on the highway were tuff.  It would start and run for about 15 seconds.  I'd floor it then when it died I'd put it in neutral and coast til I stopped.  Ya know, you can get up to almost 80 mph in 15 seconds.  I'm sure I * off a lot of other drivers but at least I didn't get shot by a road rager.  When I got off the highway I was down to about 2 seconds of run time.  I coasted into my driveway with a dead car without power steering or brakes but I made it.  WHEW!!!!   I guess I was just too stubborn to give up :(D)

I just finished digging my other car out of storage and put the ice scrapers, gloves, and tools in it.  I think I'm gonna have a beer...or two.  In fact I already am.  :b-d:

Tomorrow I'll do the trip again.....in a fresh car.  Supposed to get about 5" of drifting snow tomorrow.  Hope there aren't any surprises lurking.

Rodder's Roundtable / Henry's land speed record
January 12, 2007, 02:23:22 PM
103 years ago today on Jan 12, 1904, Henry Ford drove this car 91.369 mph across the ice on Lake St Clair to set the world land speed record.  A french guy took the record away from him later that year with a 103 mph run.  I guess there's been racers and gearheads around for a long time.

I'll bet that steering wheel would be a handful in a spinout.

I thought it was an interesting bit of trivia.

Rodder's Roundtable / '01 Taurus opinions?
December 30, 2006, 11:55:37 AM
I'd like to get  opinions from some of you guys that work on late model cars more than I do.

An older neighbor lady is selling her '01 Taurus SES with a 24 valve 3.0 Duratec V6.  She had it serviced regularly.  It's got 51K miles and the price is right.  I looked online for reviews and didn't find anything in particular that has been a problem with them.  I drove it and it's quick, quiet, brakes didn't pulse, and tranny shifted great.  Has anyone seen any problems with these cars?

Rodder's Roundtable / A little RRT survey
November 26, 2006, 06:05:39 PM
I was thinking lately about activity on the RRT and wondered if there is anything we could do to improve things.  I have a couple of ideas and wondered what kind of suggestions we might get if we asked.   If you have suggestions or opinions either way, feel free to discuss them here.

One suggestion I've got would be to expand the Index  by adding topics like "Off Topic", "Build Progress", "Hot Tech Tips", "General car talk", specific ones for engines, transmissions, suspensions, ....whatever.   Many times particularly helpful type threads get lost in the black hole when they're all on one forum.  A lot of other boards break down the topics by category like ChevyTalk or this  Teardrop Trailer forum. On those boards I notice that each forum develops it's own personality with the posts stimulating other posts and so it grows.

I know we get a lot of traffic here and maybe we could do something to encourage more people to jump in.  Many of the old timers don't post very much and some of the new guys don't stick around long.

I was talking to Frank and he said he'd been thinking about ways to shake things up here a bit too.

Anyway, I thought I'd bring it up and see what happens.  Anyone else have any suggestions or opinions?  At least vote. :D

Rodder's Roundtable / Catching up...
August 27, 2006, 02:14:53 PM
I haven't been on the computer since Aug 5 and there are a lot of posts to catch up on.

I got home from the Bonneville trip last Sunday and found that a family member was in the care of Hospice.  He died last week so between that and trying to catch up at work I haven't had time to log on until now.

I took over 900 pictures on the Bonneville vacation that I haven't sorted thru yet.  I've glanced at some of them though and there are some great shots.  It will be a little out of date but I hope to put together an album online somewhere showing the highlights of the vacation.....and there were plenty of them.  Since I'm going to the NHRA US Nationals at Indy all next week I probably won't get the Utah pictures sorted until later this fall.

I was honored to be considered a part of the 974 crew at Bonneville.  The team and it's supporters is one of the best groups of human beings you could ever expect to meet.  It seems like getting together once a year isn't enough.  I'm going to miss seeing everyone.   I met some new people this year that after a few days it seemed like we had known each other for a long time.  Life is really good.

Well, I've got to get back to life.  The garden needs picking & weeding, the lawn needs mowing, need to get a camping trailer I'm building ready to take to Indy, a woodchuck that is burrowing under my shop needs to meet his maker, etc, etc.....

I just wanted to check in and say "hey".

Here's a few pics from the record breaking run.

As the first step of my 12-step program to simplify my life, I've been trying to sell my car hauler locally for a while without any luck.   Last night I thought I'd try ebay and   listed it.  I checked it this morning and it's doing quite well....better than I had hoped for actually.  It will definitely sell so I guess my "road trip to pick up cars" days are over.  And that's probably a good thing.  I have a habit of seeing a project I just can't live without so I buy it, drive all over the country to get it, then just let it set and eventually sell it.    I will miss the excitement all that gave me tho.

I'm not getting out of rodding but I really do need to get things to a manageable level.  I've got three buildings and all of them are so full I can't even walk thru them.  Sometimes I look at all the things I've got to do and it's so overwhelming that it's hard to know what to work on first.  I'll never run out of things to do but I'm hoping to free up enough time to enjoy the fruits of my labors.  Retirement is right around the corner and I hope to be able to take the time to jump in a rod and feel comfortable taking a few weeks to travel around the country and visit some pals.

There's some pics here  that show what happens when a Canadian National Railway train runs thru the stop block in a GM new vehicle staging area.  This was at the Oshawa, Ontario truck plant.

I know it seems like a stupid question but my grandson asked me why trucks had wood in the box instead of metal and I found that I wasn't really sure.  It's one of those things I'd never thought much about.  I assume they used wood because it could be replaced easily if it got all banged up but there's probably more to it than that. :?

Rodder's Roundtable / Long time local rodder passes
June 05, 2006, 06:15:08 PM
Any of you that have attended the awards ceremonies at any of the NSRA Nats North have probably heard Larry Radcliff speak on behalf of the Southern Michigan Street Rod Association.  He was a co-founder of the club in 1967 and was president many times over the years.  He was the guy on the mike at the Charleton Park Father's Day show that the club put on for 25 years too.   He died of a heart attack while on a fishing trip in northern Michigan Saturday.

We worked together for over 20 years and shared many rodding trips, experiences, and tales.  He was a very kind hearted, happy man and will be missed dearly by many people.  I expect there will be many, many hotrods at the funeral tomorrow.

I just thought I'd mention it in case someone here had met him and would like to know.

George

Being computer people I thought maybe someone here has an Epson printer that qualifies for some cash as a result of a settlement in a class action lawsuit.  The suit was about the way they designed their print cartridges.  The settlement offers three options to recoup a little money or credit.

I bought a CX4600 all-in-one and had nothing but troubles with it.  Their customer service people finally admitted that it was junk and replaced it with a CX4800 which isn't any better.  I sent in a claim for each of them.

Here's the website for more info:  http://www.epsonsettlement.com/

There must be a Vee Dub guy here that might have a '60's preheat tube gasket laying around.  I'm looking for an exhaust gasket for my chinese bike engines that is shaped like the preheat gasket but I can't find anyone around here that has one to measure.

The picture is a VW gasket I got off the web and I drew in the dimensions I am looking for.   If anyone has one I'd appreciate it if they could measure it.  The chinese exhaust gaskets aren't very good and I'm looking for something better.
