Members Rides / Now it mine...
June 17, 2014, 06:00:09 PM
After a few years of people asking me "is that Brian's old car?", I decided to change it to "MY" car. It was red, with grey tweed interior and a 454 big block. Over the Winter it became Indigo Blue with Deerskin leather interior. I changed the big block to an LS2 a couple of years ago. I had a friend help me take the v-butt windshield out and replaced it with a 1 piece. Also, removed the vent windows. Added A/C, cruise control, overhead console and some other goodies. Now, it's Bob's car. We're in the process of moving back to Florida, from Ohio, so I will be able to enjoy it a heck of alot more.

Rodder's Roundtable / LED Headlights
December 18, 2013, 05:18:47 PM
The headlights in my '40 Chevy don't work worth a darn. When I got it, it already had a conversion to some sort of halogen. I've tried different bulbs with no luck. I assume it's because of the reflector. I've been reading about LED headlights and wondered if anyone has tried them. Thanks for any help.

A good friend is removing the vent wnidows in my '40 Chevy Coupe and putting in one piece side windows. It's a project that I knew was over my head. Evidently it's become a little to much for him, too. He's run into a problem. He is saying that when the window gets almost all the way up, it then decides to not go into the track at the top front of the door frame. It's like the window glass needs to be a few inches longer in the front at the bottom so it will stay in the track longer and guide the top into place.

I'm sure someone here has done this on a '40 Chevy (maybe a Buick or Pontiac). I don't think a Ford would have the same shape door.

He would like to talk to someone if he could, to figure out the problem. If anyone could help, let me know. Maybe I can hook the two of you up.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I'm looking for the best source for Chrome Reversed or Smoothie Wheels. I want to change the look of the '40 Chevy after it's painted. Going from Red to Indigo Blue. Will need a couple of 17x7's and a couple of 18x8's(or maybe 9's). I've got a list of 10-12 companies, but trying to get the best deal. Thanks for any help

Rodder's Roundtable / New color for the '40
January 23, 2012, 06:00:54 PM
The Boss gave me her blessing a couple of weeks ago to get the '40 Chevy painted. So, I've been looking at hundreds of pictures on the internet to get ideas. I finally came up with the color I like. My question is this: when you guys look down a row of cars at a show or cruise-in, what color gets your attention and makes you want to go check it out? Or, does that even happen? Right now, I get the guys that walk by and want to check out the LS2. I'm not trying to make this a trophy getter (can't afford that), I just want to "stand out" a little. Does that make sense?

Rodder's Roundtable / Dual Controler for Linear Actuators
February 09, 2010, 06:53:07 PM
Dakota Digital has a Controller (PAC 3200) to use when using 2 linear actuators. (The trunk lid on the '40 Chevy is pretty heavy) Dakota Digital sez it is to be used only with their actuators. I find it hard to believe that it wouldn't work with other companies products. Has anybody used this Controller before? Thanks in advance.

Rodder's Roundtable / A/C Hoses
June 19, 2009, 05:28:49 PM
While doing my rewire, I found that a couple of the A/C vent hoses were splitting out. They are 1 1/2". Since I'm trying to finish up this project this weekend, I didn't want to order any. (Living in a small town can be a pain in the a** sometimes when looking for parts.) I got this brilliant idea, at least for me, that a vacuum sweeper hose would work since it's the correct diameter and flexible enough. I checked at a local shop and the guy gave me 4 and said that I could have whatever I wanted since they were going to junk them. Does anyone see a problem with this? Thanks in advance.  Bob

Rodder's Roundtable / Steering Columns
April 02, 2009, 05:48:33 PM
I have to tear my dash out to replace the wiper motor. I've gone without for to long. I figure that's a good time it straighten things out and maybe do some upgrades. I WILL put a quick release plug on the gauge panel. I followed that thread. Since I have to drop my steering column, I have been looking at a shinny one to replace it.

The only 2 that I ever hear about are IDIDIT and Flaming River. I'm leaning toward IDIDIT because I can load up the Wife and take an hour drive to pick it up. Of course, she will want to shop at the Christmas store close by. I know that they also have BLEMS (that you can't see where the problem is). They only sell them from the showroom. This is the brand that I hear the most about.

Lookin' for some input. Pros and Cons???

Thanks for any help

Rodder's Roundtable / Swapping cars - Ohio
January 11, 2009, 06:35:24 PM
Question for you Ohio guys. A friend and I want to swap cars. They are of equal value. How does the Ohio BMV handle this? Do we each have to pay taxes? Or.................. Thanks for any help. Bob

Rodder's Roundtable / House of Kolor Software
January 07, 2009, 01:23:42 PM
I was wondering if anyone has used the software package available from House of Kolor. The one where you can see "your" car (year and model)? Before I plunk down $50, I thought I would ask. Thanks, Bob

Rodder's Roundtable / Wiring
October 22, 2008, 05:45:42 PM
As some of you may remember, I did an engine swap earlier this year, replacing a 454 with a TH350 with an LS2 and a 4L65E. I achieved the gas mileage that I was shooting for. I'm getting 30 mpg on the road. I had told the "boss' that is would pay for itself in 2-3 years. Of course, that was when gas was $4.50 a gallon. Now, it may take 4-5 years since the price has gone down.

While doing the swap, I uncovered allot of wiring problems. When I did the trade of my '32 for the '40 Chevy, I thought I checked it out pretty good. The trade was with a friend, so I might have been a little lax in my inspection.

It turns out that I was more than a little lax. I checked the car out pretty good. But, I never looked under the dash. SHAME ON ME!!! I found wires that were 3 or 4 times as long as they needed to be (he would go back and forth from side to side). I won't go thru all of the things that I found. He must have gotten a good deal on red wire, because everything was done in RED, RED, RED. Oh well. Oh, did I mention the 2 ballast resisters???

So.........my first winter project will be to rewire the darn thing. While I'm doing that I figured I would go ahead and install power windows and doors, and a power trunk (I had a post about using gas struts earlier, but have decided to go electric).

I searched RRT for suggestions about wiring harnesses and saw several thoughts. Some of the posts were a couple of years old, so I would like to ask again. Of course I would like to get the best, but I know that probably won't happen.

Which companies do you guys reccomended for:
    Wiring Harness
    Power Windows
    Power Doors
    Power Trunk Lifts

Thanks for any help. I've used most of the suggestions that I have received on other projects. And, I've tried many other things I've seen here. I have all of my fingers still, so I must be doing something right.

Rodder's Roundtable / Replace Trunk lift - '40 Chevy
October 17, 2008, 05:31:32 PM
I have original trunks lifts/springs on the '40 Chevy. I want to replace them as one of many winter projects. Lookin' for some ideas. I have thought about gas struts/springs. Or, I know that I can go electric, but not to sure if I want to have another way for the battery to go dead. I "boss" is always in and out of the trunk at shows and cruises. What have some of you folks done?

Rodder's Roundtable / Power top for a 46 Ford
October 01, 2008, 10:25:56 PM
A good friend wants to put a power top on his '46 Ford convert. It's always been a manual top. First, did Ford make a power top in '46? And 2nd, where would he go to find a kit that would work? I've searched the net for a power top kit and haven't had any luck. HELP!!! :?:  :(U)

Rodder's Roundtable / Almost Complete
July 13, 2008, 04:34:51 PM
The swap from my 454 and TH350 to an LS2 and 4L65E is almost completed. It was allot more complicated than I originally thought, so I'm glad I had someone else do most of the work. I wanted to use the computers to do just what they would have in the original car. That wasn't to hard, but getting the drive-by-wire for the throttle was a little messy. Of course, things had to changed, like the oil pan (had to go to a rear sump), booster for power brakes (had to go to a 7 inch, from an 8, because the engine sits higher and the fuel rail covers hit the old booster). This gave me the opportunity to put some shiney stuff in, so I can't complain. There were other minor things to move or swap, but I think it turned out pretty good. The first thing I noticed when I drove it was the difference in handling. The loss of a hundred pounds or so made it steer better. Since we left the cats on, so we could take advantage of the O2 sensors, it was quieter, even thru the original Flowmasters. The wife said we can finally talk and listen to the radio. There's a few more things to do, like fill in the extra holes in the firewall and make a new shroud for in front of the radiator, but the worst is out of the way. Anyway, I'll attach some pics to "show off" a little.

Rodder's Roundtable / '40 Chevy Inner Fenders
June 16, 2008, 06:14:55 PM
Okay, all of you '40 Chevy guys. Will the '39 or '41 inner fenders fit a "40. Right now I don't have any. Since I just put the LS2 in, I want to keep the road dirt/dust down inside the engine compartment. I know Chevy's of the 40's has fiberglass ones, just not for a '40.Or, would I be better off running without them to help with the heat?  I am running a 160 thermostat to help with the heat. :(D)

Rodder's Roundtable / Sun Visors Sagging
June 04, 2008, 04:47:33 PM
Is there a good way to fix a sagging sun visor? I've tried tightening them with no luck. Of course it's the one in front of the better half.

Rodder's Roundtable / Tools from H F
June 04, 2008, 04:42:56 PM
I am looking to get a 1/2" elec impact wrench from HF. Was wondering if anybody had any problems with their "Chicago" brand. It's something that won't get allot of use, so figured HF would be the place to go. About the only thing that I plan on using it to do is to take the wheels off the '40 once in a while.

Oh, what about their torque wrenches?

Is there someone that makes a 7" Booster for disc/disc systems? While doing the 454 to LS2 swap, I find that my 8" booster is going to be too close to the fuel rail covers. I can't lower the motor any more, so I thought I would go to a 7" booster. Since I don't do a lot of stop and go city driving with the hot rod, I figured the 7" would be okay. Or am I wrong? HELP!!! :(D) Any other ideas or thought would be appreciated. I've checked with Jegs and Summit, but the "salesman" at both places only looked at what they sell.

Rodder's Roundtable / March Performance
April 08, 2008, 06:15:54 PM
Well, I finally broke down and bought an LS2 w 4L65E auto tranny to replace my 454 w TH350. It was a complete drop-out from an '06 GTO with 3400 miles. Now I'm lookin' for a good place to pick up a March Performance Serpentine system to make it look pretty. I've checked allot of the regular places (i.e. Jegs Summit, e-Bay). There must be some more places that have better prices. Any ideas???

Rodder's Roundtable / Dying carpet

Rodder's Roundtable / Figure out a VIN
March 12, 2008, 05:50:21 PM
Need help in figuring out a Corvette VIN. It's on a 2006.

The 8th digit of the VIN is a "U". I'm pretty sure this means that the engine is an 6.0L LS2.

Actually I'm only looking at the engine. Want to drop it in the "40 Chevy with an overdrive tranny. Lookin' for some extra mpg's.

Tried googleing for the info, but came up with so many hits that I figured I would come to the experts.

Thanks in advance.

Rodder's Roundtable / Air Ride and Cold Weather
January 16, 2008, 05:58:43 PM
My '40 Chevy has Air Ride Technologies. I need to move it as soon as possible, hopefully this evening. The problem is that I do not have a heated garage, so the bags are plenty cold. If I raise it up with the bags being cold, will this cause me a problem? I tried calling the mfg, but it is after hours. HELP!!!

Rodder's Roundtable / Engines and Trannys
January 10, 2008, 07:06:32 PM
Lookin' for the best places to pick-up crate engines and Trannys. Or, would I be better off buying used (ebay etc) and rebuilding? I've looked at Jegs, Summit and many other places like that. There must be some places that don't do allot of advertising that have great deals. I want to replace my 454 and TH350 with something that will get better gas mileage. I get about 15 now, but with the price of gas, I think now is the time to "upgrade". I am not a great mechanic, so would probably have to get allot of help. What ya'll can do in a few days would take me a few weeks. That's why I need to get started now, so I can be finished by cruisin' weather. Thanks for any/all answers.

Rodder's Roundtable / Seat Chart
October 24, 2007, 01:24:58 PM
Is there a website that gives the measurements of various seats. Or, is this kind of a trial and error? When I talk to guys about changing my seats out, I always hear "I have such and such". That's good info, but I don't want to have the same as everybody else. At least not the same as people in my area. I saw a complete set of GTO seats on E-bay at what I thought was a food price. I thought they would fit. The person gave the measurements, and I found out that the front seats would be okay, but the bottom cushion on the rear ones were about 5 inches to deep. Just looking for another Winter project on the '40 CHevy HELP!!!

Rodder's Roundtable / 6-speed vs Automatic
October 19, 2007, 06:21:18 PM
I'm starting to see allot of hot rods with 6-speeds. Is this the new trend, or am I just starting to notice them more? Not sure I want to shift more in my old age. But, it would be fun to drive a stick again. Will the 6-speed get that much better gas mileage over, let's say, a 700R4, or an overdrive tranny? In the back of my mind, I've thought about changing the TH350 out, so maybe this is the way to go.

Rodder's Roundtable / Decal on hood of Trans AM
September 18, 2007, 06:59:22 PM
A good friend has all original '68 Trans Am. On the way home from a car show a couple of weeks ago, he had to go thru a terrible rain storm. He had been driving about 2 hours, so the hood was hot. When he got home, he noticed that the edges of the decal on the hood were starting to lift in some spots. He asked me post this question. Is there any way to fix the edges or does he have to remove the entire decal and replace it? Thanks for any help.

Rodder's Roundtable / What a surprise this was
August 12, 2007, 08:27:30 AM
I was looking for a local car show to attend, when I ran accross this on youtube.com. The forth car, the red '40 Chevy, is mine. If you look close, you can see the "Icecream spill" on the running board.

This was our local downtown show in Findlay, OH.

Rodder's Roundtable / Lookin' for ideas
July 18, 2007, 06:51:38 PM
I'm starting to think about thing to change on the '40 Chevy this Winter. I'm pretty sure I want to change the color from Torch Red. I want something that will make it a little different. Thinking of Emerald Green. Anybody got some ideas?

Rodder's Roundtable / Ft.Wayne Cruise-in???
June 22, 2007, 06:33:29 AM
Is there a cruise-in somewhere in Ft Wayne this coming Monday, 06/25? We are planning a trip there to see friends, and since the weather is supposed to be good, thought we would drive the '40 Cheby Coupe. Thanks for any help.

Has anyone been to the Nothern Rod & Custom Nationals? It's the 24-26 of May in Lima, OH. I must have been under a mushroom cause I never heard of it. Is it worth checking out? It's only about an hour away from me, so if it's worth while, I do it.

Rodder's Roundtable / Alternator
May 03, 2007, 06:26:13 PM
I'm going to replace my 140 amp, 1 wire alternator on the '40 Chevy with a chrome one. I have been looking at Tuff Stuff and Powermaster. Was wondering which way to go. I'll probably replace the a/c compressor with chrome too. Where are the best prices. Would like to save a couple of bucks, to spend on the $3.20 gas later on.

Members Rides / Just a new guy
April 13, 2007, 07:09:50 PM
I've been a member for a short time and thought it was about time to post a pic of my hot rod. It's a '40 Chevy with a 454. It hass all of the "creature comforts", so it's good to cruise in and fun at shows. We spend most of our time in NW Ohio, but venture out of state on ocassions. If the weather ever gets nice in this part of the country, we'll get out of the garage.
