Rodder's Roundtable / Ford 8 inch posi - trac lok : install a mini spool?
February 09, 2014, 07:48:49 PM
I have a munched up posi section. Teeth on friction torn up. Only 2 frictions in this unit
Can a mini spool be installed in this Ford carrier? I've never used a mini spool. Would install a fresh cross shaft at same time
Low HP car. my Falcon with inline 6 power, C4 trans, drag radial tires

Rodder's Roundtable / gasoline tank rust
January 26, 2014, 02:43:16 PM
My 1983 Monte carlo tank was dirty. I cleaned it out. Mentioned on this this forum.
the fuel filter in the Q-jet carb has clogged up a couple times. At first it looked like residual crud from tank and lines.
Now it looks like fine rust particles in filter, see photo
I have some POR 15 Prep & Ready , a quart
GUess I will purchase some more of the POR 15 product to treat this tank

Rodder's Roundtable / Duracell batterys leaking
January 08, 2014, 10:23:46 PM
If you have some device with Duracell batterys... check them for leakage from the battery.
I've recently found AA, D & 9 volt batterys leaking in clock, flashlight, other devices. With expiration dates in the 2015 to 2018 years. these are devices used on a regular basis, not sitting idle for years
Either I have a run of bad luck or they changed the batterys. I've used Duracell brand for yrs and seldom had a leaking battery, even years past the date printed on the case

Rodder's Roundtable / Power steering oil Prices for domestic older autos
December 26, 2013, 04:32:12 PM
back in the day.. LOL , I simply added trans fluid to power steering pumps
What happened? I looked at power steering oil in generic bottles and it is priced at 4.80 to 6 dollars a quart. This is not oil for an import automobile, just a generic bottle of oil. Looked at O'Riely auto , their brand was 5.40 a quart
I recently re-sealed the saginaw p-s pump on my car. I had a partial gallon jug of p-s oil from Walmart. I mixed some trans oil with the p-s oil to have enough to get the pump full

Rodder's Roundtable / Connector disassemble method?
December 15, 2013, 12:27:30 AM
See photos.. Wire pulled out of this connector. It is a weather pack type with little silicone seal on male end that plugs into this one.
I have tried to release the pin with various hand made tools pushed down into the slot openings and nothing releases the pin. I tried in the slot opening, next to the pin, from the end where the wire is crimped on , nothing seems to release the pin from the housing
Perhaps a ''one time use'' connector?

Rodder's Roundtable / Home Improvement question: Synthetic Marble etching ?
October 06, 2013, 02:12:08 PM
Looking at a store bought propane firepit thingy. TOp surround material is called Marble, Although I think it is faux marble. Smooth finish in black. My wife likes the over all fire pit, not the top smooth finish.
I was wondering if I could acid etch the material to dull and texture it. Of course the experts at Lowes "dont know for sure"
Any body worked with this stuff?

Rodder's Roundtable / Harbor Freight and your credit card
August 16, 2013, 01:32:38 PM
I know this problem is everywhere but I mention it.
My Credit union issued me a new card and PIN , it just showed up in the mail, with the PIN arriving 3 days later.
I talked to my credit union this morning. First words out of the gals mouth was Harbor Freight. Some where in HF system ; cards were compromised. My CU just issued new cards. the gal I was chatting with had the same thing with new cards because of HF.
There have been no bogus charges to my card.
In July my brothers debit card was on vacation in Connecticut. Not from HF , but someone stole his debit numbers

i've watching ebay and other places. Not sure I could repair the mount on the one I have

Rodder's Roundtable / Installing new filler neck in new fuel tank (steel)
June 23, 2013, 12:37:12 AM
this Monte I am working on, the fuel tank has rust inside. I can buy new tank with and without a filler neck. new filler neck available separate
I was wondering how the neck would install by a DIY person? Does not look like a rubber O-ring is used and the neck would push in.
Seems like a serious sealer would be needed and to drive the neck into the tank without bending it

Rodder's Roundtable / OEM headlight plastic socket
June 02, 2013, 07:48:22 PM
Working with 1983 Monte carlo.. OEM retangluar headlites .
the plastic socket connectors for the wires are falling apart. Looking for OEM style replacement so I can simply plug the OE wire connector end into the new plastic part.
I found Dorman 85810 and 85809 for GM headlite use. 2 connector , 3 connector designs
Can not tell if these would simply accept the OE wire harness connector end so I do NOT have to cut wires. I hate to cut the wires to splice in a pigtail

Rodder's Roundtable / Crosley Automobile days are over for me
May 27, 2013, 08:08:33 PM
This not an ad for the sale of my Crosley stuff.... just sorta a post about a decision I finally made
I am getting ALL my Crosley cars and parts out. I've decided to sell it all off. I made the decision several days ago.
Spent part of this 3 day weekend digging stuff out. Unloading the cars of the various parts I had stored in them.
I've got a bunch of parts. 3 CIBA engines, 1 CoBra engine, 2 crank cases misc parts up the waazoo.
Placed a few ads on forums, will see what happens. We have a swap meet coming up, I may drag a car and stuff out to it.

My regulator is pressure creeping on the low side... the low side PSI will climb up towards 20 psi when the torch is not in use. During use, it regulates well
Seems like the last time (years ago) on a different brand regulator I had the unit rebuilt.
Simple fix with O-rings or take it in for rebuild?

February 23, 2013, 10:00:44 AM
New Reid case in photos. This has full governor circuit for automatic shifts. Bolt on bell housing. Case and Bell are SFI rated for safety & race use
there is also an ATI brand case, race use only , no governor cirsuits.
Very tough , durable case. In the area of 1400 dollars new , with NO bell housing
With these design cases, bolting a T-400 trans to a Ford, Mopar or other engines just became a lot easier

Rodder's Roundtable / Daily driver shock brands
February 16, 2013, 08:27:56 AM
I have not bought shocks for a daily driver in years.... I drive the daily driver , then sell them off.
My 1/2 ton Silverado needs shocks. 2006: 2WD, basic crew-cab daily driver.
Only 40 k miles on the truck, but is is over 7 years old now.
Back tires want to dance - bounce a little when I hit the brakes firm at road speed. I looked at everything, narrowed it down to weak shocks
i used to buy only Monroe shocks. Are they still a good brand?

Rodder's Roundtable / Arizona Drag strips are disappearing
January 27, 2013, 10:25:18 AM
I imagine most folks do not know that Firebird drag strip near Chandler AZ may be closing. A dispute with the Indian tribe has put the whole facility status up in the air. The main guy Charlie Allen is to be gone, if not already.
Scuttle -butt is the Indian tribe may operate the race facility on their own. They would hire a management group to operate Firebird. Keep in mind Firebird has a drag strip, a large water pond for boat races, a road course, dirt race track and Boundurant driving school is there too.
There are groups interested in the water park and the road race stuff. At this time , no body is interested in the drag strip. NHRA has asked the tribe for upgrades to the track to continue to operate races there. I've heard 1 million $ in desired improvements from NHRA. The tribe supposedly said "no" .
SpeedWorld race facility out west of Phoenix in the Wittman AZ area is to close after 50 yrs. State of AZ has cancelled the lease after a long battle SpeedWorld had with Maricopa County over alleged zoning violations.
SpeedWorld drag strip is currently operating under a "special use" permit I am told.
SpeedWorld had drag strip , dirt race courses for bikes, BMX, trucks, RC airplane field , RC car race tracks too.
I have a drag race car 1948 Simca I am building. I stopped construction in november 2012 when it became obvious the drag strips in metro Phoenix were closing completely or at least for a year or 2

Rodder's Roundtable / Cooling for automatic transmissions
December 23, 2012, 11:41:32 AM
Photos of an Olds car in the shop. Our transmission, not our install.
This install illustrates incorrect install of trans cooler, trans lines, cooler location.
Cooler is not in air flow for proper cooling. Cooler is undersized for the job. Tube and fin design is lowest quality for heat removal
Rubber hose is clamped onto the steel lines, with no flare on steel lines or a brass fitting with barbs.
If you must run a trans cooler under the vehicle, use a fan on the cooler to move air.
In a colder climate, this may operate just fine, I still do not like it. Not good for use in warm climates

Rodder's Roundtable / Brake pedal ratio needed? 6-1 or 7-1
April 15, 2012, 08:01:39 PM
I am looking around for brake pedals and ratios used.
I see brake pedal with cylinders complete unit listed as 6-1 ratio in the pedals that mount on the floor. If the pedals mount under the dash , they list the ratio as 7-1
I am looking at Wilwood stuff for information. Dual master cylinders mounted on the bracket with pedal
The Wilwood calipers I have on the rearend need a 7/8" cylinder.
It appears a 7/8 cylinder will operate the front VW disc calipers too

For my Simca, I need a under floor brake pedal. Yeh... I could build something, but I dont want to chase all the misc parts & needed supplys down. I prefer to buy a kit and make minor changes if needed.
Posted photo is for illustration only.
My Simca brake pedal will need to Out side of the frame. Master cyl behind the pedal. The master cylinder ports would need to be on the outside away from the frame. Space is tight in the area.
i've read some Ford master cyl had ports on opposite side, so in this configuration they ports would be located as I want them

Rodder's Roundtable / VW type 3 brake caliper hoses
March 16, 2012, 05:32:06 PM
I've looked around on the net, not found the info yet.
On these brake calipers of the Type 3 VW , the brake hose threads into the caliper.
Is there a brake hose that uses a regular flare at the end where the steel line would install? As I recall these VW stuff use the bulb type ends on the steel lines.
Black rubber hose or stainless braid hose material. either one should work for me , unless the stainless hose cost gets crazy high

Rodder's Roundtable / Econoline spindles and light weight brakes
January 28, 2012, 06:59:17 PM
Looking for ideas for lighter brakes on these econoline spindles.
I am familiar with the common disc brake conversion on these spindles with large calipers and rotors from a Mopar application. Bolt wheel pattern is 5 x 4.5 Ford
These parts are heavy and I am looking to lighten up stuff for a drag car application.
Pictured are the vented rotors I have, they measure .950 thick.
The $$ budget does not allow Wilwood brand type parts. I've been watching eBay and other locations.
If I could fit a solid rotor disc, VW calipers would be a possible fitment.
Guess I can leave the brakes off the front

Rodder's Roundtable / Wire terminal crimping kit problem
November 22, 2011, 10:59:43 PM
I have the ratchet crimper #18920 Tool Aid brand... see photo) Had the tool for several yrs, seldom use it because of problems
When I use this on regular insulated terminals, all goes well. Any other style terminal I can not get the crimp correct.
Non insulated terminals , I burned thru about 5 terminals (2 sizes) trying to figure out what I am doing wrong. I tried 2 different jaws that come in the kit on non insulated terminals.
I must have wrong terminals, wrong jaws , wrong something. I tried terminals facing both directions in the jaws.
Problems range from crushed terminal. the terminal will stick in the die jaws. I try different size terminal in different jaws, no improvement.

Rodder's Roundtable / Trailer wheel locks
October 09, 2011, 11:03:31 AM
We had some pamphlets dropped off at the shop on these devices:
http://www.trailersafetylock.com/
They install between the tires on a multi - axle trailer.
I have zero experience with the device , just tossing it out for viewing. Seems like running a chain through the wheels would work too. A beefy chain.
But... with battery powered cutting tools, anything can be cut off easily
The way some thief's operate, they would just simply drag the trailer down the road

Rodder's Roundtable / Race car switch panel
October 01, 2011, 01:41:14 PM
Build one or buy one?
I do not want to drill holes in a dash , would prefer a panel with 5 - 6 switches and start button.
Moroso and Quickcar have panels in the 85 - 95 dollar range on eBay. I have no idea of switch quality.
Wire harness on my 1962 Falcon is old , brittle. I may add a panel with ignition - start - fuel - water pump- cooling fan on the car. I have installed 2 switches into the holes for the radio controls for now. I Need to do something different.
I have some switches from Del City, good quality and a push button for start... these parts are around here somewhere in a box.

Rodder's Roundtable / Bent push rods and Mower belts - lawn tractor
August 31, 2011, 11:02:13 PM
My Sears lawn tractor spit off the main belt. 5/8 x 90 inches and a 5/8 x 89 inches length..... it appears those are the 2 belts I need.
I find prices from 12 dollars 'shipped' to 45 dollars plus shipping. Hopefully quality is better in there some where
I see a PIX brand often and low price. Must be a China or India manufacture.
Sears OE belts are in the 40 dollar 'each belt' area that I have seen.
The original belts are 9 yrs old... so the quality belt is what I am after.

Rodder's Roundtable / Tighten up the bends in a roll bar?
August 13, 2011, 12:40:09 AM
i've got a roll bar I need to narrow up the bottom of the legs. This was a kit roll cage from Jegs. The main hoop needs to be a bit narrow at the bottom of the legs
The legs are a bit wide by about 3 inches. I do not have a tube bender to drop them into and put a shade more bend on each side.
I have thought of use the "cable come-along" and squeeze the tubes together some. I doubt that would move each leg in an equal amount.

Rodder's Roundtable / Wire terminal block size
July 16, 2011, 08:35:45 PM
I bought a needed terminal strip at Radio shack for a quick project.
I had forgotten that the strip design is such that I have to narrow the wire spade connector slightly to fit between the little dividers.
Is this the standard design / width? Or would terminal Blocks from Delcity or similar place be larger?
see photo

Rodder's Roundtable / Electric hoist
April 22, 2011, 10:28:10 PM
I need a small electric hoist cable motor to lift various items to bench height. Weight would be in the 100 - 225 pounds. Seldom at the 225# weight, but that would be max I think
Looked at the Harbor Freight units, that is the design I am after. Granger has some , but at 3 times the cost of HR.
I would need to build a roller - trolley type device so the hoist device could roll - swivel to lift items up - down from bench height

Rodder's Roundtable / Resin or epoxy to fill cavity in hot oil ?
April 09, 2011, 12:17:35 AM
I am looking for suggestions on material to fill a trans case area.
In the photo , the circled cavity is what I need to fill.
The area I need to fill is about 1.400 inch deep at the deepest. It is about 1.5 inches long and .600 wide inside that yellow line area
It would be exposed to hot transmission oil and pressure of 175psi
I use JB Weld on smaller areas in a valve body to fill a void or block a passage. This one is larger - deeper , so something else in a mix and pour situation would be helpful
This material would need to be filed - sanded down level with trans case surface.
Casting resin has been suggested, although I was warned the resin tends to shrink as it sets up hard. I guess multiple pours would work

Rodder's Roundtable / PARTS for GM 1990 truck column
March 31, 2011, 10:45:51 PM
I have a non-shift, tilt column out of a 1990 chevy truck (as I recall).
needs typical pot metal parts replaced in the top of the unit to repair it. i got a price of 175 - 200 dollars from local place. Kinda surprised by the price.
Any online places sell parts or part kits? A google search turned up some places where part prices seemed very silly high too.
Are these broken columns now expensive to repair?
