Rodder's Roundtable / Carter carb parts availble
December 10, 2013, 08:14:07 AM
I have purchased a huge Carter carb inventory, the parts are from early 30's thru early 50's.  All are in very good condition with the original factory finish including many shafts, tabs, linkages etc that are impossible to find.
Shoot me an email at:  ojh4@verizon.net  if there is something special that you need, maybe i can fix you up.
Thanks, oj

Mods, if this is too much an advertisement then delete it, I'll understand.

The second of our shop gatherings will be held tomorrow, this one will feature engines and John Wessles will start the presentation of with a flathead engine; Gary Phares will follow with a modern SBC and show how to replace a cam and degree it in; the major topic will be carburetors and we'll get into early carbs thru to modern and discuss rebuilding, theory, tuning and the relationship to ignition.
As always the gatherings are free and there is a provided buffett.
My shop is:
Clarke Co. Speed
607 E. Main St.
Berryville VA  22611
540-955-0479
we get started at 10am and go until all questions are answered, i suggest you bring a chair

This one is on Feb 10th and is shaping up to be a good one, Gary Phares just confirmed that he will be able to demo how to do a cam change in a sbc and use the degree wheel, locate TDC and figure your clearences.  Gary is an instructor of 35years at Northern VA Comminuty College in Manassas and past Track Champion of Old Dominion Speedway.

John Weston and I will do carburetors, we'll spend some extra time on theory and tuning besides the mechanical rebuilding.  We'll have many different carbs to look into including Zeniths, many different Holleys, Rochester, Stromberg, Carter etc.

Theres a few other things that we will be presenting and i'll post when they are confirmed.

Hope to see you there, oj

This winter i am hosting a series of seminars in my shop, the first one is this Sunday the 20th of Jan.
We will begin with Dave Krolak of Nostalgia Works, Dave will do brake systems from Model 'A' spindle and conversion to hydraulics to modern disc brakes.  He'll explain the system design, master cyl sizing and wheel cyl calculations, proportioning valves, etc and explain it so's you understand it.
Then I will do a presentation on wireing.  I'll start with the proper tools, proper connectors, explain basic wireing principles, how to design and make a harness and generally confuse everybody.
The major topic is ignition systems and we'll start that with Ted Bennett PE, Ted will dissect a coil and explain how it actually works.
Carl Anderson of Early American Auto Restoration will go into the early points style distributors, what to rebuild, how dwell works, what vacuum does.  He demonstrate them on a Sun 504 machine so you can actually see them working.  We might be able to make up a sparkplug rack and connect the whole mess to a Sun Scope/Analyzer.
After Carl we will have John from Electromotive, he will take us from the points style to modern coilpack ignitions.  He will go into the history behind the CD type ignitions and explain thier workings and compare them to the modern coilpack systems.  He will have some of thier state of the art engine management systems with him and do a demo for us - John is an engineer, not a saleman so this isn't going to be an 'infomercial'.
Electromotive are the guys that developed the coilpack ignition on your dailydriver, if you are considering a fuel injection management system then this is the guy you might want to ask the odd questiion, this is a rare oppertunity.
We begin at 10am, we'll have a buffet lunch and we go until we are done.  It is all free!
I hope to see you there.

Rodder's Roundtable / Boiling Fuel
September 28, 2012, 03:55:58 PM
I been dealing with an interesting problem.  The underhood heat is boiling the fuel off in the carb.  The carb has a glass sight window and you can watch it happen.
When i shut the engine off there isn't any problem but when it sits the temp in the bowl rises and it is pushing fuel out the squirter!  I would have thought it'd come thru the booster but it is dribbling out the squirter.  It is a dominator carb and i can watch it happen.
I put the temp gun on it and the bowl reads 147degrees, i can see it boiling inside at that temp.
I've added a phonelic spacer, we'll see how that changes things.  I believe the heat is affecting fuel pressure as well.  When the engine gets close to 200deg it changes how well it runs and the fuel presure jumps to above 9psi and can overwhelm the needle and seat.
I don't understand all i know about that, the regulator is attached to the hard lines going into the carb so there is air all around the regulator, the fuel line comes up from the frame in front of the cylinder head and runs rearward to the regulator - it is stainless braid and air around it too.  I believed the fuel pressure spike to be something in the fuel pump bypass, i took it apart last night and give it a clean bill of health.  This work was done before i became aware of the heating affecting the fuel.  I think the heat and fuel pressure spikes are connected.
Hot rods, there just isn't anything normal about them, is there!

Rodder's Roundtable / 9" Ford rear freewheeling?
July 11, 2012, 02:50:33 PM
I pulled the axles out of a 9" ford to check for axle seal leakage, when i slid the axles back in and tightened everything up they just freewheel, as if they are not going into the carrier.
It is an open carrier, non posi, and i didn't mix the axles up.
With the axles in place i can turn one axle and see the other turn.
I can reach in and turn the driveshaft while holding either axle.
I can put the manual transmission in gear and spin either axle.
The mileage is unknown on the rear, i assume lots of miles.  I can look into the carrier and it all looks ok.  When i pulled the axles there wasn't anything unusual and i didn't hear anything go 'clunk' like it dropped out of place.
Any ideas on what is wrong?
Thanks, oj

Rodder's Roundtable / Rear Gear reccommendations
May 30, 2012, 08:20:13 AM
I'm finishing a '66 Chevelle and need input for rear gear.  The car has 9" ford rear with tremec 6spd, 28" tall rear tire, 632 engine with 750-850lbs torque from 3500rpm up.
With all that motor i am thinking the first couple gears in the tranny will be about useless, i am also thinking that i don't want to be anywhere around when this thing is in 6th at about 5K rpm.
What do you guys think for the gear ratio?
Thanks, oj

Rodder's Roundtable / Multiple carb question
March 28, 2012, 06:15:18 PM
I am interested in your opinions on how best to do the front and rear carbs of a 3 carb intake.  Should i plug the entire idle circuit or just run the idle mixture screw in tight?  Do i richen the main jet to compensate for the fuel that the idle circuit provided?
These are 3 holley 1904 1 barrell carbs going on a 6 cylinder.
Any other thoughts?
Thanks, oj

Members Rides / My Modified under construction
December 18, 2011, 11:55:13 AM
Heres some pics of the modified i am currently working on.  The body is from a touring car, frame is model 'a'; engine is '56 331 hemi; tranny is 40something top loader ford; rear is late 40's ford open drive pickup; wheel are wide 5 with the hubs cut loose and mated to buick drums.

I am having to figure how to post pics, and will add them soon.
