Rodder's Roundtable / Cornering the market
August 09, 2016, 10:06:39 AM
Bought another corvair. this one is for parts. Going to swap its 4 speed into my powerglide and make a real car out of it.  It is a real rust bucket so I thought I might roll it on its side to work on it. The guy was attached to it. Didn't think he was going to take the money and give me the title for a little while. Than I forgot to get the keys.  This one is a corsa so it has some parts I should be able to sell and recoup my $300.

Rodder's Roundtable / Idle adjustment my way
August 20, 2015, 12:21:46 PM
This is the way I learned.

Start by turning the idle adjustment screw out 4 to 5 turns. Yes, rich to lean not lean to rich. Start engine set throttle to manufacture speed. About about 830 rpm. Now turn each idle screw in about 1/4 turn. Keep doing this until the rpm increases. Reset throttle to maintain engine rpm as you go. You will find as you lean out the carb the rpm's will increase. So you are adjust both at the same time. When you get to the highest rpm you will want to lean the carb out an addition 40 rpm. 20 rpm per side. Also if you watch each idle as you lean the carb, the rpm won't change at the same time. Each screw is different and should be adjust as such. So one may be turned 2 and the other 2 1/2. Its ok. When you get done the transition slot adjustment should be set also. No tip in hesitation or gassy idle. This is the lean drop method.

Rodder's Roundtable / Strike 2
October 04, 2011, 01:28:40 PM
The old coupe got another ride Saturday. 2nd time in 3 months. Had to use the AAA card this time. Nothing to serious. The fuel pump went out. I have one ordered. Should be here to today. Near as I can tell it was 19 years old. Holley red. Going to change the filter also. Could be the same age. Hopfully I can finish breaking in the Diff without another mishap.

Rodder's Roundtable / Pain in the Rearend
July 11, 2011, 11:59:33 AM
Was going to Sioux City to visit ( 40) and a car show Saturday. Didn't quite make it. Rear end popped leaving a rest area just south of Sioux City. We made it another 4 or 5 miles. As we went around the off ramp a ring gear tooth must have tryed going thru the pinion. We were stuck. Daryle saved the day. Brought his trailer and we loaded it up. I think it took 200 of the 400 horses to move it but move it did. Went to the car show with Daryle and the ladies. Ate lunch on Daryle. Then he hauled Me and the wife and car home 90 miles. What a guy. Thanks Daryle.
The wife and I pulled the center section out Sunday. This has a vet rearend. Just took a couple hours. Ring gear was broken and the carrier is split in 2. Did have oil in it. Wife said its been growling for a couple weeks. I should have listened to her. Obviously I can't hear. (or listen)
Found a place in Florida that will remanufacture it. I have to try to get the side shafts out first. The one has the posi plate wedge against it.
I'm thinking this might be caused from abuse. I'm just guessing
Other then that we had a good weekend. Will try to take a picture.

Rodder's Roundtable / Door seals

Rodder's Roundtable / They are at it again
January 14, 2011, 12:18:28 PM
Oil price have been going up again even without the demand. This is what happened last time and it put us into a world wide recession.  Its time for some questions as to what is going on. I wasn't a big Bill Clinton fan but he did open up the US reserves and put a stop to it during his term. Maybe Obama should do the same thing. It would put a stop to the speculators and leave them holding the bag this time. Plus it would keep the recovery going..

Rodder's Roundtable / Test drive
January 06, 2011, 05:51:48 PM
Drove a 2010 Challenger RT today. 5.7 Hemi. What a nice car. I put the trans in manual mode and it shifts into 2nd by itself when you hit redline. Really barks the tires. Drives good and sounds good. 80 felt like 50. I touched 100 before common sense took ahold. Man could I get into trouble with this car. Going to have to think on this one. I know I'll ask the wife.

Rodder's Roundtable / FLO-TEC aluminum heads
July 28, 2009, 02:35:09 PM
I have a SBC I'm collecting parts for. Has anyone bought a set of these:180cc intake runners
Straight or angle plug
62cc exhaust runners
64cc combustion chambers
2.02" and 1.60" stainless steel valves
Hi-Performance springs for .550" lift
Five angle valve job
Bronze guides
3/8" screw-in studs and guide plates
Speedway has them. Price is very reasonable. Wondering if they would ok for a 350- 400 hp engine.

Rodder's Roundtable / Body
April 14, 2009, 05:11:53 PM
I won't be able to make the 1st build. Thought I could but isn't going to work out. Could the body be extended between the rear fender and the door? It would keep the car in better proportion than just extending the front. Hope you have fun Saturday....................

Rodder's Roundtable / 2008 Power Tour
May 28, 2008, 12:23:49 PM
Is anyone going this year? It is coming thru here on the 11th of June. Lincoln, NE to Ames, IA leg.  Logan,IA  Is there any thing the town can do to attract people to stop or do they usually just pass thru? It will be about 200 miles that day. They are going across HWY 30.  We do have one gas station with 93.5 octane. That might be a something some will need.

Rodder's Roundtable / Fender well headers done
March 03, 2008, 04:56:14 PM
I finished the headers  two weeks ago. Took them to the coater and had them ceramic coated. Had everything back together by Saturday for the one day of warm weather.  I'm hoping my under hood temps go down. I would like to be able to run 89 octane gas. 91 octane was $3.50 a gal.
I put my stock spindles back on to gain some ground clearance. Rides better. I don't have to have the coil overs as tight. Gained about an 1.5".

Rodder's Roundtable / Fenderwell headers BBC
November 30, 2007, 02:41:11 PM
I want to get rid of my shorty headers and go to full length headers. Just wondering if anyone has had them on 35 or 36 chevys? The ones I'm looking at also fit 55-57 chevys. Patriots. Maybe another brand. I can buy the unfinished ones local and have them coated for less then buying the coated ones. Just wondering if they will get to hot and damage the fenders paint or any other draw back?

Rodder's Roundtable / 2002 ford 3 liter troubles
March 29, 2007, 05:40:47 PM
I have a 2002 3 liter ford ranger. It will run ok until 3000 rpm. Acts almost like  it is governed. Starts hunting, no power. Doesn't  die, always starts. Fuel pressure 70 psi. New filter. Any ideas. Thanks Mike

Rodder's Roundtable / Engine build
May 18, 2006, 04:55:19 PM
I have a 350 block at the machine shop. Had to bore .060 over. Going to deck the block for zero deck height and use a .043 head gasket for the quench. Is this correct? Also will be shooting for 9.5:1 compression. Will be using dished pistons and what ever cc heads to get the compression right.
The cam I'm looking at is as follows:    Hyd. roller 1.5 rockers                 282-284 adv.   230-232@.050   510 lift  110 lobe    106 centerline       2000 to 5800 rpm.
 For the street.  Thoughts
Four bolt main block out of a combine(truck block) with a forged crank.

Rodder's Roundtable / Car Prices ?
January 12, 2006, 06:13:53 PM
I'm tring to find what a 48 Chevy, 2 door business coupe, might be worth and not having much luck. Does anyone have a web site for this? The car is on an Auction in a couple of weeks and a person at the bank wanted to know what it might be worth.

Rodder's Roundtable / Flowmaster's?
December 28, 2005, 12:01:03 PM
I'm looking at putting on a good pair of mufflers because my ears are still ringing from last summers cruising. Does anyone run the 70 series flowmasters and are you happy with them? They have offset/offset on the same side but would fit. Other wise the HushpowerII would fit but may be to loud. The 50 series would be the best fit if they had the right offset combo. Any other suggestion?

Rodder's Roundtable / Dyno Results
May 26, 2005, 04:26:29 PM
I went to a car show in Sioux City, Ia last weekend and ran my car on a wheel dyno there. I have a BBC 454+ .030. Daryle ask what I thought it would do before we started and I said I would be happy with 300HP at the wheels. The first pull was 301 @ 4800. I was right in the ballpark. The second pull was 309@ 5000. We ran it up to 5500 rpm but it peaked right at the 5000 mark. 136 mph at 5000 and 145 at 5500. The torque was 440 ftlb between 3300 - 3900 rpm. They adjusted the HP to 401 at the engine for what ever that is worth. This was on 91 octane gas and under 180 engine temp.
I also ate supper with Daryle and Denise and had a great time as always. His 36 is looking good. It is going to look good no matter what color he paints the dash and garnish moldings.

Tech Archive / Cooling again
January 05, 2005, 09:09:09 AM
HRSJ posted some info on a high flow thermostat that was erased when there was site trouble. I had too get a new griffin radiator  (leaking, broken motor mount) and thought this would also be a good time to replace the water pump and the thermostat. I thought i would get the stewert's components stage 2 pump but wasn't sure on the thermostat.

Rodder's Roundtable / Griffin Radiator leaking
January 01, 2005, 07:33:06 PM
Anyone had this problem?  I had noticed alittle steam last spring but ran all summer without any problem. Noticed some water on the fender in October. I use a radiator tester on it Friday. Pumped it up to 30 psi and no laek. Cap was bad so I replaced it and went for a ride. Still leaking. Crack must open up when hot. Looks like where the epoxy and the tank meet. I was wondering about their warranty and dealing with them.
The wife and I got it out today. We will have to get another griffin or someone elses. Going to put in a HP water pump in also while its apart. Debating whether or not to pull the heads and port and polish. I need to lower the compression to get rid of light load pinging.

Rodder's Roundtable / MG-MGA
August 10, 2004, 09:34:29 PM
1959 MG-MGA will be auctioned at my local sheriffs department next month. It was stolen and they have been unable to find the owner. It looks as if it was being restored. The thief cut the battery cable and took the batteries ( your guess is as good as mine-2 six volts). Luggage rack was also stolen. (apparently an expensive item) Had hot wired it and left it in the country by a grain bin. Paint is abit scuffed and mice have been in it. What I was wondering is price to bid? I have been looking on ebays dream autions( nobody gets to the reserve), to some that have been sold for 8 to 9000 on other sites. ( Running and in good repair) The sheriffs office have been led to believe that this car could be worth up to 30,000.( this would of coarse be a perfect show car) Which they do not have.
Anyone here have experience with MG's?  Over all it it wouldn't be bad to fix if the thief didn't trash the motor. They did try to start without any luck.
Anything I should look at might help before I bid.

Rodder's Roundtable / Insurance Claim
June 18, 2004, 12:12:49 PM
I'm sorry to say that I'm going to try out my Insurance. I damaged the front fenders and grill apron at a car show Sunday. I have Hagerty Ins. The first contact was today. Very nice lady. Hope everything goes smooth.
Bodyman wanted to paint the whole car but I vetoed that idea. Biggest problem for him was the paint is a mix of 2 different House of Kolor colors. He said something to the effect that the original painter must have been a chemist   I love the color and the graphics so we're going to match it! the best we can.
I'll keep you posted on the results.

Rodder's Roundtable / New Carb
June 05, 2004, 08:32:44 PM
I replaced my Edelbrock with a new Holley Street Avenger today. 8)  770 cfm. Not to hard as it had a Holley before I bought. Runs pretty good right out of the box. Had to adjust the idle screws and set the speed. I also changed the secondary spring. .... And I removed the electric choke. Who needs a choke. Had a blast running the P out of it. Wife thought I was going to blow the motor. Now I have to settle down and see what the mileage is.............

Daryle, my wife Anita and I went to Sioux fall Easter morning to a indoor car show. BTRC ( Bob ) was debuting his 37 Ford Sedan. Thought I would share a picture for you.
