Rodder's Roundtable / A mystery ....
January 03, 2019, 11:45:33 AM
Hey guys ....Lets start the new year off correctly .....

You all remember my Kidd ...Lifetime Air Force guy...Yellow '37 Dodge ... Uber anal about anything he owns with wheels...( Actually wax's the inner fender panels & wheel wells on his wife's Camaro & his DD Suburban....

Anyhow ...The attached photos are from the camshaft from his Suburban....
It's a '08, 5.3 engine, 170K miles ,(even mix of rural/highway miles..They take LOTS of trips on the interstates )...

It has had oil changes every 5K miles at the dealer since new using Mobil One Synthetic oil..  Never late one time ...Has every service verified & logged ....Does not use any oil between changes ....Always had excellent oil pressure ..

Here's the kicker ...This vehicle looks NEW...When the dealer opened the engine up for the camshaft repair, they were amazed at how clean it was ....NO sludge, no carbon, no residue..... The crosshatch is still visible on the cylinder walls .....

My question ....What happened to the cam & lifters  :?:

The photos show the worst lobe & worst lifter ....There are many other lobes that are worn, ("Grooved" ?), the same way ....

Rodder's Roundtable / Garage Heaters ..
May 23, 2018, 09:46:33 PM
My 60 year old garage heater is starting to smell kinda wonky ....
Is anyone using or familiar with  Mr. Heater " Big Max" hanging heaters  :?:

After doing my due diligence on brands & models, it is worse than the Ford/Chevy/Lincoln/Hobart/Miller thing all wrapped up in one    :?
Almost every site I visit has the normal "Mine blew up the first day" / "Mine has lasted 25 years with only a dusting" argument ...
I am aiming toward a 30/50K BTU rated unit .....

Rodder's Roundtable / Alignment spec info....
February 28, 2018, 07:16:16 PM
Hi Kids .....I was just sorting through the paperwork from our "Aerial Adventure" last year with the Ugly Olds ....

I found the printouts from the alignment after the repairs were complete & saw some specs that I understand but don't know how to convert to "Real World" info.....
All the printout info is in degrees & I would like to convert these to a measurement in inches if possible ....

The rear axle is offset to the right causing a 0.57 degree left offset to the thrust angle at the front axle ...( IE:  The "thrust angle" is offset 0.57 degrees to the left) ...

The R/front wheel centerline is setback 0.22 degrees from the left front.....( IE: The R/F wheel is 0.22 degrees behind the center of the left front)

The R/Rear wheel is setback 0.47 degrees from the L/Rear wheel...( Again..The R/R wheel is 0.47 degrees "behind" the left rear wheel )
The wheelbase difference is 0.25 degrees, side to side .....

The wheelbase is 116" & the tread width is 60" both front & rear..
The front suspension is Mustang II & the rear suspension is "Truck Arm" style just like in a Cup car or early 60's Chevy pickup...
Can anyone convert the above readings into real "inches" so I can understand if more corrections are needed :?:  :?:

As you all know, the car was airborne & landed on the rear axle/rear bumper going backwards, then spun again & went forward down the embankment....( WHEEEEE  )...

We have almost no driving time on the car except from shop to shop to home due to weather ....I am trying to get everything back to normal so we can return to driving this summer ....The car "feels" completely different to me due the the addition of power steering but does not pull or seem to wander other than "touchy" power steering ...We will correct that by adjusting pressure after driving ....

Thanks up front for the help...

Rodder's Roundtable / Uglier Olds...
July 12, 2017, 11:41:47 AM
Hi Kids ...It is with a heavy heart that I post this ....The good news is that Cathy & I seem to be OK .... The "Ugly Olds" , well, not so much soo..... :(
We were traveling home from a show & short stay at our sons house Monday afternoon, on the Interstate , just kinda cruising along in traffic at the speed limit, A/C blowing cold & enjoying good tunes, when the L/Rear tire blew ... :-o
It lost the complete tread, just like a semi-truck tires we see so often...

From what the people that stopped to help said, I was able to sorta control the first 180* spin on the pavement , then went off the road, at speed, backwards over an embankment...

The car landed on the R/Rear corner, spun another 180* & thank God , landed on its wheels ....

This allowed us to slide to the bottom of the embankment in the proper direction to stop in the trees & brush at the bottom of the hill...

Again, many people stopped to help, we are very thankful for that ...We both had seat belts on, as we normally do..

At this point we are still kinda gathering all the bits & pieces as Monday afternoon & yesterday were kind of a blur..

The state troopers & first responders were there within minutes & could not have been more helpful & professional.  :b-d:

We actually had somewhat of a "search party" on the side of the road, as when the car landed the trunk popped open, completely emptying its contents down the embankment ...It seems that we actually drove over our own luggage before coming to a stop in the trees..  :?

As far as the Olds, I have not had a chance to inspect it completely at this time ...All four fenders are damaged, the tire tread broke loose the fuel filler neck, the running boards are bent & the rear lower body is "crunched"....
My main concern is the undercarriage & suspension ...  As many of you know, the front end was a prototype for the Heidt's "Universal Series" of Mustang II suspensions...The rear suspension was the stock "truck arm" style that we rebuilt & added a late GM rear end to....
We cannot get under the car to assess anything, but can see bent lower control arms & other damage to the front end with possible damage to the rear end .....

On the bright side, a couple of ironic things .....

We had just stopped about 5 miles before the crash at a local truck stop for lunch & fuel ...We were congratulating ourselves on the 21+ MPG we were getting up to that point .....( Note to Phil, 58 Yeoman, We had stopped at the "Dixie" & crashed just North of there ) ...
The second thing...  We found a big bug "splattered" on the trunk lid...That's the first time I ever killed a bug, traveling  BACKWARDS

The strange part.....The grille, front chin, all the cast aluminum parts that truly make the Olds "Ugly", appeared to survive with just scratches & bruises ...

I will try to post some photos , after I FIND the camera.....

Rodder's Roundtable / Fenders
November 06, 2015, 08:29:06 PM
In preparation to giving my Grand Marquis to my son & grandson to use, some "updates" were needed ...  :?
Front & rear pads & rotors ...Front & rear shocks ..Replace all stab links .. New battery .. Reman alternator ..( $$$YEOW  :!: )  Fuel filter, coolant service , lube/oil/filter, alignment .....
WHEW.. This is the most I've ever spent to give a car away ....

I am also replacing both rusted front fenders & repainting the front clip...

Strange thing on the fenders .. We were able to remove a good , rust free right front at a Pick-A-Part in his area ...
I had to buy an "import" replacement for the left side .. The fender arrived well packed but damaged .. I took photos & requested that the supplier ship another fender & a pick up slip so the damaged fender could be returned ... They advised that another fender would be inspected & shipped that day .. 8)

As for the damaged fender , they requested that I just dispose of it as returning it was not needed ..
The replacement fender arrived 3 days later in good shape ...

I have seen this before with small items , but never something the size of a fender .....

Must be somethin' new  :?:

Rodder's Roundtable / Help with an HEI coil ...
November 05, 2015, 08:53:26 PM
I decided to move this to a post of its own ... Anybody got an idea   :?:

I have a question for all the guys that have a good understanding of HEI & remember them well.
In my parts stash , I recently found an Accell # 140003 NOS coil.. I put the multi-meter to it to verify it's condition..
Primary side ...0.5 Ohms as per the spec sheet...
Secondary side ...Open .....
An autopsy determined that there is no "ground" lead coming out of the epoxy sealed coil..No evidence of there ever being one there ...

Almost all the HEI coils that I have seen have a red "battery" wire & a yellow or white wire that goes into the "tach" position on the cap....Then there is a short black or dark blue ground wire with a ring terminal that goes under the internal metal strap on the iron laminated pole part that becomes the center terminal between the batt & tach terminals ... My first step was to look at another coil in stock & sure 'nuf ..Three wires ...

This coil has a red & yellow wire combination & I know it must be matched with a pickup coil with a yellow wire for correct polarity ...( The ones with a white wire are used with white wire pickup coils ..Again, something about polarity or engine rotation ..Olds / Pontiac maybe ??)..

I remember something about '75 or early '76 cars using this combination but what makes it work ??? I cannot understand how the secondary side would get grounded ...??

Again..This coil is brand new , never been installed & has no evidence whatsoever of ever having the short black ground wire ...

Of course , the Accell tech dept advised me that I was :

A ..Mistaken...
B... Missing the obvious ....
C.. Blind ....
D.. Crazy
E.. Having no knowledge of what I was talking about .....
F.. Just plain stupid....

I admit to "D" & sometimes "C & F" , but I know what I am seein' .....

Anybody ever run into this ?????

Rodder's Roundtable / Info on threading
February 09, 2014, 07:01:05 PM
Hi kids .. I have another of those "machinist" type questions ....

I was making up some linkage rods that required 7/16-20 threads ...
I had some .500 bar stock handy ..
Looked at my handy tap & drill size chart.. I showed that I needed a diameter of .3906  to produce 7/16-20 threads .

I turned the bar stock down to .391 & threaded it by hand with a die ...
Complete failure .. The diameter was too small , to the point where a 7/16-20 nut would almost slide on the threads ..

Being the creative feller that I am , I found a piece of "Factory Threaded" linkage  that had 7/16-20 thread & measured the O.D. right above the threaded area .. It measured .430......

I turned another piece of .500 bar stock to .430 & again cut threads using the die ...
VOLIA !!!  ..Well almost .. The threaded area came out a little oversize on the diameter but running the die up & down the threaded area a few times made the fit acceptable ....

I always use "Tap-Ease" as a lubricant  when cutting threads ...

My Question ....

Where did I screw up on the diameter ???     I know of no different thread charts for inside vs. outside threads ..

What am I missing here ?????

  Thanks in advance .....

Bob ......

I have what is a somewhat strange question ....

I am installing "Air Lift" bags in the back of the Ugly Olds...  I was able to get a bag setup that is very close to the dimensions I need ... I will need to make a spacer or block to fit above & below the bag inside the spring ..
These spacers will be 4.5" O.D. &  2.0" thick .. I have some blocks of what I think is "Derlin" .. A white plastic / nylon  material that is 2" thick & has a glued on "burlap" type of backing ... I picked up the blocks at a garage sale a long time ago & the seller was closing out the remains of his machine shop....

My Questions :
A....  Will this material "live" in the environment I described above ????

B.. Do I have to do anything special to turn the material in a lathe ???

Thanks for the help ....

Rodder's Roundtable / Dial Bore Guage Parts ...
July 31, 2012, 06:48:46 PM
Hi Guys ... I have a situation ...

I own a MHC dial bore gage kit # 612-5912..measures from 1.4" to 2.4" ...Looks like this .......

http://www.ebay.com/itm/MHC-612-5912-1-4-2-4-Dial-Bore-Gage-Set-Indicator-0-001-Graduation-4K-/120915086330?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c2719cbfa

The MHC # 612-5919 kit is identical to the first gage except it measures from 2" to 6"  & it looks like this ...

http://cgi.ebay.com/PRECISION-ENGINE-CYLINDER-HOLE-DIAL-BORE-GAUGE-GAGE-SET-?cmd=ViewItem&hash=item483fa94775&item=310305703797&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0

Anyway the only difference between the gage kits seems to be the "Anvils" that dictate the diameter of the bore.. You screw the proper anvil into the base of the indicator, use a mike to adjust to "0".. , stick it in the hole & VOLIA !!   You're measuring the diameter of the hole , cylinder, inside round thing , with GREAT accuracy ..  8)

My problem is that I have searched the web to the point of exhaustion & cannot find a supplier for the additional anvils & parts to make the gage read out to 6" ...  :(

I went as far as to send an E-Mail to the company in China that makes the gage requesting a dealer list or ????

I received a reply in VERY broken english that advised that "I should please to be returning to the store that I bought it at for your help" ..

Any body got any ideas ?????

Thanks .....
