Rodder's Roundtable / 9" Springs
March 31, 2019, 04:36:15 PM
Looking for a set of 9" x 2.5" chrome springs rated at #400. Thought maybe someone has some laying around they might want to get rid of. Replacing the #450 ones for a better ride so I will have them laying around. If this is not allowed please delete it.

Rodder's Roundtable / 9" Ford rear end bearing issue
March 12, 2019, 10:51:35 AM
Cleaning up the coupe for the summer and noticed some grease/dust on the calipers on the back. Took it apart and noticed that there was grease oozing out of the bearing seal. The car only has 6000 miles on these bearings. My question is what should I do about this. The bearings are sealed bearings in a 9" ford rear end with wilwood disc brakes. Should I replace the bearings, try to push the seal back in somehow? I know that there has been some discussion about bad bearings on the forum and don't want to be far from home and have a bearing go out due to lack of grease. The bearings on there came with the currie rear end and are set tight in the housing. The caliper bracket for the brakes has a recess that allows for the bearing to be out past the axle housing. Thanks for the input gents.

This 68 Camaro was at Restore a Muscle Car shop for a few upgrades when someone broke in to their storage building last Friday and stole it. Yesterday, Tuesday morning it was reported to have been involved in a fatality accident in Mankato Minnesota @ 5:15 AM. The car was estimated to have been going 85mph when it left the road and hit the embankment of a drive and flew 200 feet before multiple end over end rolls. The occupant/driver use to live here 4 years ago. Their till trying to figure if he stole the car or if someone else was involved. Driver was thrown from the car and was dead at the scene. Car was valued @$80,000 they say. The blue material looking stuff is a car cover that was probably in the car.

We all liked this, but had our doubts many shared our enthusiasm. We were wrong. This 1965-66 Rambler Marlin in the House of Kolor Paint display was a deep, dark candy burgundy, was finished to the highest degree, featured a tasty black leather interior, and had a terrific stance. That brings up the thing we've said many times before that you can have the dumbest car and if it sits right and has a terrific wheel and tire combo it's golden with us. In this case platinum.

Bill Smith, whose interest in racing spawned a world-renowned marketplace for racing parts, died Friday.

D. William "Speedy Bill" Smith was 84.
Smith's death was announced Saturday by Bob Baker, executive director of the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame and Museum, during induction weekend events in Knoxville, Iowa.

Smith was a 2000 inductee of the hall of fame, one footnote in a legendary career that coupled hobby with business.

Speedway Motors, the company he founded in 1952, is not only America's oldest speed shop but ranks among the world's largest manufacturers and distributors of parts for racing and street rod markets.

The Speedway Motors campus in west Lincoln includes the Smith Collection Museum of American Speed.

Smith's wife, Joyce, died in August 2013.

Rodder's Roundtable / Intake Manifold Sealer
May 17, 2014, 08:54:41 PM
What do you guys use for the ends on an intake manifold for sealer. I used the black gasket sealer and now have a leak on the front with only 3500 miles on the engine. It is a zz4 crate motor with the aluminum intake. I roughed up the surface on the block before I installed it. I do have a pvc valve on the passenger side and a breather on the driver side. I hate leakers.

Thanks

We are saddened to report the passing of Joyce Smith, "Mrs. Speedway." With her family at her side, she lost her courageous 34 month battle with cancer on Sunday. She is now in a better place, free of pain, and with her Savior in Heaven.

In 1952, fresh out of college and newlywed, Joyce Smith loaned her husband "Speedy Bill" the $300 he needed to start Speedway Motors. Throughout the years, Joyce's outgoing and friendly nature served Speedway Customers well... "No one could sell hub caps, fender skirts and continental tire kits like Joyce," "Speedy" Bill liked to say! Joyce was initially Speedway's bookkeeper, parts runner and counter gal and always served as Financial Officer, Corporate Secretary and Treasurer. Joyce was a trailblazer, a tireless working mom who labored 60-plus hour weeks at Speedway while raising her four boys and still finding time to teach Sunday school. As a respected businesswoman, she was honored to serve and direct many organizations, several as their first female board member.

Joyce was a true "car gal" in a man's world. In the early days Joyce's daily driver was her prized red '34 Ford pickup, a Rebel's car club show winner. Always at Speedy Bill's side for 60 years, Joyce attended or worked more races, car shows and trade-shows than almost anyone in America. Since their inception, she walked the swap meet fields of Hershey, and worked the aisles of SEMA and PRI, the pits at Daytona and attended countless street rod and racing events. In 2005 she was honored as Goodguys' Woman of the Year! As the proud co-founder of the Museum of American Speed, Joyce now shares her love and knowledge of racing and rodding history for future generations.

Joyce's friendly, outgoing personality was genuine. She loved people and she was liked and respected by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. The entire Speedway Nation will miss you Joyce!

An incredible collection of extremely low-mileage classic cars is due to be auctioned in Pierce, Nebraska, on September 28-29. The Lambrecht Chevrolet auction features almost 500 cars and trucks, many of them showing only a handful of miles on their odometers.

While few of the vehicles are what you'd call priceless classics, they were lovingly cared for by the family-run Lambrecht dealership for more than 50 years. The cars coming up for sale include a 1978 Chevrolet Corvette Indianapolis 500 Pace Car replica with only 5 miles, along with a number of classic pick-ups with similar near-zero mileage.

Rodder's Roundtable / Insurance
May 28, 2013, 11:49:21 PM
Time to do the insurance on the coupe. Used the quote tools on the web for Hagerty and it was $750 for the year.  Did the CHROME and it was $344 for the year.  Used "Stated" value for both of them. Have my regular insurance with Auto Owners and it is the same "Stated" value and it's $360. The language in the AO insurance seems to be a little confusing to me as "Stated" amount. Says it will be settled on the actual cash value at time of loss.  Chime in and help me out fellas.

Changing the filter and fluid in my 97 ford explorer tranny. Dropped the pan and pulled the filter out (which is just friction fit with an rubber seal).  Poured the fluid out of the tranny pan and this little yellow plug with an o-ring seal was in the bottom. Can't find anywhere it would have fallen out of the bottom of the valve body.  I assume it was the plug in the dipstick hole when the tranny was shipped and the person installing the dipstick tube on the assembly line just punched into the pan instead of pulling it out and discarding it.  What do you guys think.

The car has a new annoying problem. It quits for no apparent reason. Driving down the road and it kills. Turn the key off tap the accelator once or twice and it fires back up again. It does this from a cold start and also when it is warmed up from driving around town. Wifey is getting annoyed and I'm ready to trade it off..  Any clue as to what the cause is. I did have the throttle body cleaned and the mechanic said it wasn't bad enough to cause any problems. There are no codes showing and the check engine light does not come on. This happens when she is driving or stopped.

Rodder's Roundtable / 93-Z34 Lumina AC ??
February 27, 2012, 08:15:12 PM
Replaced the compressor on the 93 Lumina with the 3.4 motor. Had a terrible noise and I decided it was the clutch on the ac so I replaced the whole compressor. Problem was that it was the water pump not the ac compressor. Bad on my part. Now the problem is that I did replace it with a new unit. Vacuumed it down and put in 2 cans of 134a. With the motor running the clutch will not engage. All worked well before the compressor replacement.

Any ideals what might be going on. The clutch on the compressor has a 2 wire plug so I'm not sure if what to hook up to see if the clutch will engage. (the one on the 34 coupe has only one wire and it grounds through the housing.) Can't find any blown fuses. Swapped a couple of relays around also and that didn't help. Thought about jumpering the pressure switch but it has 3 prongs on it so that's not easy to figure out either.

thanks

Have a 97 all wheel drive ford explorer with 180,800 miles on it. There is a clunk in the transfer case upon hard acceleration which is the chain jumping on the sprocket. This has been comfrimed by the tranny guy. He wants up to and not over $1,300 to rebuild it.  I'm wondering how hard is it to just replace the chain in one of these. I've built motors, set up rearends and am mechnical incllined. Would it cause problems to put a new chain in if the sockets are in reasonable shape.  Junk yard guy has one from a rollover wreck in the yard for $325. Any information would be appericated. Have not did any research on the web yet for rebuilt or other information.

Rodder's Roundtable / Daily driver issues
August 05, 2011, 07:47:38 PM
My wife's 1993 Chevy Lumnia Z-34 does not want to keep running when started. It starts then quits starts then quits. She was stranded the other day and when I got there it started up right away. Thought it might have been vapor locked cause it was very hot that day. It has never vapor locked in the 15 years we've had it.

So today she calls me and says it's doing it again. I tell her to turn the key off and push the accelerator pedal 5 or 6 times. Tries to start it and it startsand runs great.

Could this be some type of sensor in the throttle body or another type of sensor ???  Has the 3.4 DOHC motor.

thanks in advance

Rodder's Roundtable / Dodged the bullett in the garage
August 21, 2010, 10:50:02 PM
Opened up the cabinet in the garage that has my radio/cd/tape player in it and got a real surprise. Couldn't believe what I saw and thank the Lord that that was all the damage there was compared as to what could have happened. Must have happened while we were gone over a long weekend cause there was never a strong smell of anything burning even after I opened up the cabinet.

What happened was a can of paint stripper had a hole in it and slowly leaked out and run down the front of the shelf to the lower shelf and dripped on top of the stereo and ate the plastic and then leaked inside and shorted out some electrical connection. Must have been a small fire due to the black burnt stripper gel. I couldn't figure what all the jelly like stuff till I cleaned off the top shelf and  found the hole in the can. I think since the doors on the cabinet fit pretty tight that the fire used up all the oxygen and smothered itself out.

There was a lot of flammable items in this cabinet so it probably could have burnt the garage and house too.

Note to self: do not store flammable items and electrical components in the same cabinet.

Trying to plan a trip this summer and was thinking going to the Hot Rod Nationals in Indy. Know a lot of you guys live close to there and would like your input on the show.

If you are an entrant do you have to pay extra to watch the drags or are they included in the registration cost.

Any information you can provide would be helpful.

Rodder's Roundtable / Front Spring Weight
October 03, 2008, 08:26:01 AM
Anybody have spring rate for the front coil overs on a 34 Ford coupe running small block, aluminum heads and aluminum radiator. Come to find out the chassis came with #350 which is to light as it's compressing the spring and ruining the bushings in the shocks and is causing the problem with the ride issue I asked about earlier in the summer.  Aldan site says  generally 400,  Heidt's says 450 if the 350 don't work. Just trying to get a real time weight from someone who might be running a front coil over setup.  The front end is a Heidt's Super Ride setup and they said the front end should have a heaver spring. Yogi's says they will get it fixed, just want to do this once not a lot of trial and error.

Rodder's Roundtable / Gas smell after driving
September 11, 2008, 08:47:22 PM
When I take the coupe,34 Ford, out for a drive and come home and park it in the garage and come out later in the day or in the morning I have a strong gas smell in the garage (not exhaust), gasoline. It usually takes 2-3 days for the smell not to be there. I run a fan to clear out the smell and it is back in the morning. I have tried plugging the vent on the gas tank when I park it. Turn off the switch on the electric fuel pump and let it run before shutting it down so there is no pressure in the line.  Thought it was a carburetor problem and changed it and still have the same smell. Small block Chevy with a Edelbrock 600, the one before was a Edelbrock 750. Can't find any leaks. Always smells like it's coming from the engine compartment.

Anybody have this problem or a solution.

Thanks

Rodder's Roundtable / AFB carburetor
September 22, 2007, 06:28:42 PM
Having some issues with the carb so i changed it out with an Carter AFB  and it had no book with it in the box so I can't tell which is the full time vacumun port. It is a 9636 for a chrysler product but I'm just using it to see if the problem is the edelbrock 1411 which it was.

With the motor running I put a vacumun gauge on both of the front ports and have no vacumun at idle, only when the rpm's go up so they both must be ported.   There is a port  by the choke also but it has nothing at idle either.

So my question is do the chrysler products not have or use a full time vacumun port?

Or does anyone know if there is a instruction manual online I can download?

Can't come up with one on a search or at the Federal-Mogul site which is the name on the box as well as Carter High Performance Series

Thanks for the info,

bob

Rodder's Roundtable / Spark Plug info needed
September 20, 2007, 10:30:36 PM
Have a ZZ4 crate engine. Came with AC marine plugs MR43LS. These are tapered seat plugs. The tech sheet that came with the engine says there are optional plugs which are listed on the sheet as AC FR5LS and Rapid Fire #5.  Went to the parts store and these two and a NGK crossover all have a gasket ring on them which has a slight taper to it. My question is can these be used on the alumniun heads. Went to the ac site and couldn't figure out anything.

Or does anyone have a tech line # I could call and ask. Don't want to screw anything up.

Rodder's Roundtable / Tire Pressure Question ??
July 17, 2007, 11:08:07 PM
Just wondering what kinda pressure anyone is running?? The coupe is a glass body with a small block chevy. Talked to some guys and they said 18-20, 18 being for a hiboy and 20 for a full fendered car such as mine. Finally got it together and on the road,  still have to polish out the side panel for the hood. Here's what it looks like now after 8 1/2 years of working on it doing it all myself at home. Thanks in advance.

Tech Archive / Hood Side Panel Fasteners
March 14, 2007, 10:01:22 PM
Couldn't find any aftermarket ones so created my own. Made some L-shaped brackets to mount on the side panels. Cut a long slot in this piece so the panel can be adjusted in or out.  I welded mine on but in hind site I wish I  would have use some panel adhesive or some other way instead as there was some shrinkage to deal with on the outside of the panel.

Next for the pins I took a  1/4" stainless bolt and put it in the drill and turned it while working it on my bench grinder. You can see the progress from start to finish in the picture. Once the point was finished I polished it up. Put a nyloc nut on the bottom so it would stay in place and not have to deal with it moving up and down while putting on the other one and keep the depth where it needs to be. Couple of oversize washers and a nut and its all finished.

The brackets that mount on the inner fender panel were made with a  hole large enough to put in a grommet in so the pins will not rattle or rub metal on metal. Panel with the studs slide into these.

The top of the panels fasten to the brace on top with two allen screws so the removal of a couple of allen screws and the panels can be lifted off and not have to unbolt anything on the bottom.

Rodder's Roundtable / First time in Daylight
March 11, 2007, 10:08:47 PM
Drove the coupe from the back stall in the garage out into the daylight for the first time under it's own power.  :D  Still have a few body pieces to buff out and install as you can see by the pictures. Really gets the blood pumping being able to drive it 30 feet. Would have taken it for a spin around the block but there's still a lot of gravel on the street form the blizzard and all the snow last week  that has since melted off.

Got the coupe fired up yesterday. Had a lot of things to come into play to make it all work. Put a oil pressure switch in line with the electric fuel pump so if the motor shuts off in a wreck or something else and the fuel pump will not be continually running. Having put this in then I needed to put in a monetary switch so I could prime the carb after setting for a time. All of those items worked well. The Centech fan switch worked great and came on at the adjustable set point (180 for the moment and off at 160) when the temp cooled down.  NO leaks from any of the fluids.  700R4  tranny pumped up and works in all gears fine after waiting 7 years from rebuild to get a shot of fresh fluid. Sure was good to smell the fumes in the garage and hear the rumble of the motor. Now its time to finish buffing parts and installing them and install the glass.

Been painting parts and things are going great, no were going great. The gun is new and I've run about a gallon of primer thru it and a quart of color.

Problem is that it acts like it is running out of paint when there is lots of paint still there causing dry spots where doesn't come out. I can see some small bubbles coming up the paint cup with the lid off. With the cup off and some cleaning fluid poured in the top of the gun you can see the bubbles come up when the trigger is pulled.

Have everything snug as far as parts.  Any ideals.

thanks

Got the chassis all put back together tonight. Everything is tightened, aligned, bolted down and the like. All I have to do is hang the mufflers and tailpipes back on and fill all the fluids before the body goes on. Body is ready for primer and the final block and paint. Sure takes a lot longer to put it all back together than to take it apart. Been working on this for 7 1/2 years so it's finally getting close.

Rodder's Roundtable / 9" Ford Rear End Seal Number
March 15, 2006, 11:04:19 PM
Does anyone know the seal # for a 9" ford. Looks to be about 2 1/8" in round. Have some National 9568 (think that's the #) that are to big. Think it is a later rear end housing. It is a currie that came on the frame. Also could use the gasket # for the 3rd member.  Seems the young guys don't know how to look things like that up.

Rodder's Roundtable / Little Red Rolling Roadster
March 09, 2006, 08:56:46 PM
Friend had a crazy ideal to try for the Autorama this weekend. Painted a set of tires with Red Onmi paint to match the interior of the car. During set up people would stop by and scratch their heads and wonder what the tires were. One guy even said to his friend "I remember seeing colored tires like that somewhere for sale. Really looks like a over size hot wheels car.

Another interesting thing about this car is the body was Made in China. It is steel. When Joe bought it it was somewhat smooth. Had it blasted to clean it up and it was full of bondo. It looked like it had the measles with all the bumps it had. Took a lot to smooth it back out. That's why the Made in China plate on the back.

So what do you all think??

Rodder's Roundtable / Quality Garage Time
March 01, 2006, 10:44:44 PM
Been working on the car at a maddening pace the last month. Summers comming and it will be on the road this summer. Haven't been doing much but checking out the forum lately as I'm been in the garage.

Finally got to put some primer on the old girl. Finally done fitting, filling, sanding, sanding filling, and more sanding. Set up the garage for spraying in the back section where i added on a 16x24 addition. Made a filter system by cutting some holes in some cardboard and hot glueing some pleated furnace filters on it and hinged 2 panels in the middle so it can be folded in half and stored out of the way. I have a silver tarp that is set up like an old bamboo shade that can be rolled up out of the way when I don't want to block that section of the garage off.

To pull the air through the garage I took an old squirrel cage blower from a  furnace and installed it in an old slab door I had. It fits in the door opening that goes out the back of the garage nice and snug. Once the blower is turned on there is a nice air flow through the new paint booth.

Used my new Harbor F gun to lay on the primer with a 1.7 tip and worked great. (thanks Sum) Used a new primer, Omni 241 which is like spraying liquid body filler. Sprays nice and turns rock hard and sands easy.  Here some pictures and the parts in the "booth".  :D   Should be able to have the body in primer this weekend too.
