Rodder's Roundtable / Pertronix problem?
July 25, 2021, 01:11:35 PM
When I bought my '63 Ford, I had to replace the distributor. One of the previous owners had installed a Pertronix set, which I transferred to the new distributor. I've had one before and never had a problem with it.  I took the Ford for a ride the other day, and cruising down the highway at 80 mph (indicated, reads way fast), and every so often, it would feel like the ignition would shut off for just a 1/2 second or so, then would keep running fine until the next time it did it.

I don't know how old the unit is, or how to check it. I looked in my stash hoping that the new dizzy came with points & condenser so I could swap them out, but I guess not. I coulg get a new set of points & condenser for ~$20, but thought I'd ask first to see if anyone has any ideas?  It's not like it's my DD, so I've got time.

Rodder's Roundtable / Question for Ugly Olds
August 27, 2019, 09:34:52 AM
Bob...recognize this car?
#5
Kanter has a sale on this weekend, and I'm wanting to rebuild the front end on the Galaxie after I finish the rear springs. Has anyone had to replace the inner shafts on their front ends. The odo shows 84000, but we all know how that goes. Everything at the rear came apart very easily with no bolts snapping. I'd hate to spend the extra $100 only to find that they don't need replacing.

When I did the Yeoman in the 90's, I didn't replace the shafts and everything went well...but, this is a Ford. Could be different?

Rodder's Roundtable / Rear leaf springs for my 63 Galaxie
November 07, 2018, 11:14:57 AM
Anyone know where else I can look for leaf springs for my 63? Kanter has a pair for about $660 for the pair, with front bushings in place, but no rear. Rock Auto has a pair for about $466, but no front bushings in stock. They have the rear kits for ~$25. Kanter doesn't give any info, except that they are for (I think) 60 to 80 Fords. RA says 5 leaf springs, and my car has 4.

Rodder's Roundtable / Getting a lost title
August 03, 2018, 08:13:29 AM
How hard is it getting a lost title now days? My Yeoman came with a salvage title, and I was able to get that changed back in the 90's. In the 80's, I bought a VW Karmann Ghia with a lost title, and was able to get a replacement from the state with the original owners family consent; they didn't want the car, but didn't know where the title was.

There is a car for sale in WI w/o a title. Has it gotten harder to get titles?

I've got a rotisserie on ebay, and said that I would deliver it locally.  Someone has asked me how much I would charge to deliver it about 100 miles one way.  I would have to take the landscape trailer behind the Ranger, which gets around 18 mpg.  Does $75 sound reasonable?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/A-C-KIT-UNIVERSAL-UNDER-DASH-EVAPORATOR-COMPRESSOR-KIT-AIR-CONDITIONER-12V-/281696053864

I've gone to Summit and a couple others, and all I can find are total heat/ac units, unless I'm driving a Ford truck or Mustang.

Anyone familiar with this outfit?

My daughter is moving to Texas next month, and will be towing my old Ranger on a tow dolly.  Will the trans lose a lot of fluid by removing the driveshaft?  Or, should I tie it up with a ratchet strap?
#12
I found this in my toolbox, and I don't know what it is, or why I have it.  It's about 1 5/8" in diameter, and 1 5/8" to the top of the two prongs.

1/2" drive.

Rodder's Roundtable / For the 60's Ford guys
July 04, 2013, 06:58:30 PM
The mufflers on the '63 Galaxie I bought in May sound like crap.  They are very short round mufflers, and I'm betting that they are straight through; sounds like a truck w/o a muffler.

I'm looking for a nice mellow sound in the original rear mounting spot; I want to do this only once.  Any ideas?  I thought Smithy's might sound good, but I watched a youtube vid with a '55 Chevy 6 w/split manifold and duals, and it sounded like my car.

The exhaust is basically stock 2-2 1/2" with H pipe.

Thanks.

I finally got all the parts in for the Ford.  Installed new oil pump/screen, removed the oil filter housing to make sure everything was clear and open, watched the oil drive shaft turn as I turned over the engine, checked a rod and main bearing, and they looked good, but the car still doesn't have oil pressure.  I pulled the pressure sending unit this afternoon, and turned the engine over.  The oil barely comes out.

What am I missing here?  The oil leaves the pump and goes right to the filter and sending unit.  The dipstick is now showing about a quart low, after turning it over a few times. :?:

I'm parting out the '83 Trans Am, and I put the hood on ebay as a local pickup, and I've got two inquiries already about shipping it.  I've already sold the rear hatch, tires/wheels, and a pu load of other stuff off it locally, but no one local wants the hood, I guess.  I had to take two tires/wheels off the old Pontiac to move it out of the shop so I could get the Ford in there to check out why it lost oil pressure.  I'm hoping to get time to work on it this weekend.
#16
Is there anyone in Columbus, OH that can check out a car for me?  Another Ford popped up.
#17
A friend of mine has an '83 Trans Am that he bought new with a 305 5 speed that he's looking to sell...maybe less than $1000.  He had paid $1200 a few years ago to have the engine rebuilt and a new clutch installed.  The rebuilder told him that it was a Camaro 305.  I've been thinking of putting a 4 or 5 spd in the Chevy, and maybe the engine and trans both.  Anyone see any problems with this.

The car has been sitting in his garage for a few years, started up once or twice a year, and lately one of his sons shot out the drivers door window.  He's thinking of just getting rid of it.

Rodder's Roundtable / Ranger didn't start this morning
December 07, 2011, 07:50:10 AM
I was driving the '05 Ford Ranger (4.0L engine) last Saturday, when it seemed to die for about 2 seconds, just long enough to let me feel the pause.  Ran fine the rest of the weekend.  On the way to work Monday morning, it stalled at the stoplight; I pushed my foot to the floor, and it started and ran fine.  Monday after work, I read the codes with my HF code reader, and it showed no codes.

Tuesday ran fine.  This am, it just kept turning over, but no start.  I had to take the wife's car to work.   Geez...the last Ranger would die, but usually start right up and go...

Any ideas what to check after work today?  I'll try reading codes again.

Rodder's Roundtable / Loose CV joint on Taurus
September 15, 2010, 06:57:39 PM
It's a '97 Ford Taurus with 3.0L V6, automatic, and it sometimes shakes when using the brakes.  Sometimes it will continue to shake while going down the road, as if a wheel/tire is oval...other times it quits shaking after letting up on the brakes.

I crawled under it today, and the right inner cv joint is loose, the whole thing, as if maybe the circlip is broken that holds it to the stub shaft in the trans?  It doesn't appear to be loose as if the joint itself is worn out, plus both shafts have Ford part stickers on them.  They may have been changed at one time, as it was an AT&T car for most of its' life.  I don't know if the original stickers would've lasted this long.

Ideas?

Rodder's Roundtable / FLAGG shackle kit
March 21, 2010, 03:49:38 PM
My brother used to have a '64 Falcon Futura, and he bought these two kits to fix the suspension, but he said they didn't fit.  I'd like to get them out of my way.  Does anyone know what they fit for sure?  He sold the Falcon years ago.

Flagg FS 771 shackle kit

Flagg F5 bolt kit.

Thanks.

I was using the small snow blower Thursday afternoon, when it just quit.  After a bit, I got it restarted, but it only ran a short time.  I put in a new plug today and made sure it had gas.  It started and ran for a few minutes, but didn't have any power.  Then it died again and won't start.  It sometimes pops back through the card when I'm trying to start it.

It's an MTD with a Tecumseh engine.  Has run great til now.  Any ideas?  It's about 15 years old but still in great shape.

TIA.

Rodder's Roundtable / '99 Ford Ranger starting/stalling
September 06, 2009, 09:45:08 PM
A few weeks ago, my Ranger would stall right after starting.  I checked it out, and found the tps had come loose.  I tightened it up after lubing it, and all seemed well.  After a couple weeks, it started doing it again, but the tps was tight; I checked the wiring connections and they seemed okay.  Problem gone again.  Thursday, it did it again, so I stopped at napa and ordered a new tps.  I installed it Friday, and all was well all day Saturday while we were hitting the garage sales with a lot of start and stops.

Got in it this morning, and it did it again.  After the first couple stalls, it ran fine.  I stopped at autozone, but they couldn't check it out, because the 'check engine' light isn't on.  Any ideas where to go from here?

Rodder's Roundtable / Need a car for my daughter
July 07, 2009, 12:26:50 PM
I need an economical car for my daughter, less than $4000.  I don't know which cars are good anymore.  Seems like the mfr.'s change engines so often, I don't know which ones to look for or avoid.  I've already decided against the quad4, as my sister had problems with hers.  Any suggestions?

Rodder's Roundtable / 1997 Buick Skylark 2.4L 4 cyl

My sisters Skylark is missing on one cylinder.  Autozone hooked it up to their scanner, and all it says is that #3 isn't firing.  This am, I pulled off the cover, and there aren't any spark plugs?  This is weird.  Any ideas?

Rodder's Roundtable / 63/64 Merc 9" vs 66 Ford Galaxie 9"
December 21, 2007, 01:54:43 PM
I've installed a 63 Merc 9" in the Pontiac, but don't know how many splines are on the axles; it's a 3:55.  I can get a 66 Ford 9" locally cheap that has a 3:00.  Do they have the same # splines or not?  Anyone know off the top of their head?  Thanks.

Went to a local show today, as  I couldn't find anyone to help me install my kitchen countertop.  There is a car in there that Frank might like, if he decides to get rid of the Marlin, now that's he's a year older.  I've heard that older people like converts.

I hope the link works.  See if you can see Frank's replacement.

Rodder's Roundtable / Will this size tire fit my Pontiac?
December 02, 2006, 07:03:34 PM
I was heading south on I-39 today, and this tire fell out of the sky, into the center median.  Well, actually, it was just setting there on top of the snow.  No one else stopped, so I did, wheeled it to the back of the mini van, and loaded it up.  It is a brand new CEAT ST-92 tubeless trailer service tire, size 11-22.5.   Dam thing is huge.  Any ideas on what it's worth?

Rodder's Roundtable / 1997 Buick Skylark

Geez.  Wish I could get more time to work on my stuff.  My sisters buicks' turn signals and brake lights don't work.  I have voltage to the 3rd brake light, but not to the rear lights themselves.  No turn signals or 4ways work, or even light up.  I thought flasher at first, but I can't even find it (dang small cars), but now I'm thinking the turn signal switch on the column?

Rodder's Roundtable / 2001 Chevy Malibu
November 22, 2006, 01:31:35 PM
My buddy bought a wrecked Malibu with 40k miles.  It was T-boned on the right side doors.  He's had it for a couple months, and has just started working on it.  In storage, he would start it every couple weeks.  Now, he's disconnected the battery, got the bad body damage cut out on the right side, and disconnected the airbag module under the right front seat.  He hooked the module back up, and the battery, but now the car won't start.  Has spark; he thinks it has shut off the fuel pump.  Anyone know how to reset it?

Rodder's Roundtable / Winter storage
October 24, 2006, 03:36:44 PM
I took the top off my corn wagon today, as I was going to the seed company to top it off for winter burning.  Last summer, I had put mothballs into some old socks, and hung them under the wood/aluminum cover to keep out the mice.  There was mouse droppings in the wagon.

When I got to the seed company, my buddy there told me that it's not the smell, but when they get it on their feet and lick it off, that they don't like.  He would crush up 40 or 50 pounds and spread it around inside the building around the skids of corn to keep them out (mostly; there are still some in there).

Just a thought for some who store their cars or bikes over the winter with mothballs in/on them.  You might be better off spreading crystals around the vehicle.

I went to two car shows on Sunday, but the one with the big cars fizzled out.  The Crosley's had an even Baker's Dozen....not counting the tractor.

The gas guage on the van works well when I fill it up.  When it gets to around 1/2 or below, it gets real erratic, and the low level light comes on.  Sometimes it goes back up, sometimes not.  I'm guessing the unit in the tank; the electric pump is also noisy.  Are they one unit, or separate, anyone know?  TIA.

Rodder's Roundtable / 4 speed transmissions
June 25, 2006, 09:18:57 AM
My 58 has a 3 speed tranny, and I'm just kicking around the idea of installing a 4 speed.  I see Saginaw's going for much less than Muncie's, and I'm assuming that the Muncie's are much stronger.  As I don't race or abuse the 58, a Saginaw should fit the bill.  Do 4 speeds use the same bell housing, front yoke, etc.?  One for sale in IL says it came out of late 70's Camaro.  TIA.

Rodder's Roundtable / Studebaker overload
May 21, 2006, 07:36:25 PM
I was riding around on the cycle today, and stopped in this tiny town of Lowpoint, IL.  I'd been there before, but never had my camera with me.  I started snapping pix of the Studes, and this old fella comes up the street, and I ask him if they are his.  He said they were, and it was okay if I took pix (some people don't like you even being around their cars).  I asked him if he ever sells anything, and he said yep.  He took me inside the old building to see his Avanti, that he drives once in a while; his red PU, his 39 Stude, and a couple cars he's working on for customers.  It is really dark in there, and I had to lighten up some of the pix just to be able to see them.

If anyone needs parts for a Stude, give him a call.  His name is Don Gay, Box 77, Lowpoint, IL. 61545.  309-443-5217, tell him Phil sent you.  My guess is that he's in this 70's, but gets around really well.  The two bullet-nosed cars belong to cutomers, the yellowish one is a convertible.  Between the convert and Avanti is a 3/4 T PU frame, belongs to a customer also.

The Metro and the Model A (?) were taken in other places.

Go here and click on the May 21, 06 album to see the pix.

Rodder's Roundtable / Way O/T...corn storage
May 13, 2006, 09:13:13 AM
I'm sure that some of you must be farmers, or at least be able to offer some advice.

I bought a corn stove in January, and started out getting my corn in bags.  The guy at the elevator said to get a corn wagon, so I did.  I got a 90 bu flare wagon that has to be raised to get all the corn out.  My house was built in '36 with a coal room in the basement; all concrete, even the ceiling, except for a small hole knocked in it for electrical work.  One farmer friend of mine said to just load the corn into the room, just make sure that all the holes and cracks are sealed up.  I've got about a dozen bags stored in the basement with mothballs scattered around them.  I've also got mothballs in bags hanging inside the corn wagon, trying to deter mice, which seems to have worked so far.

My question is, will mothballs in the coal bin keep the mice out?  There are also large storage bags available on ebay for storing corn, and I thought I could also use these in the coal bin, which would hold at least three at 30 bu each.  (We use these same type bags at work for shipping plastic resin).  But, if the bags would work, why wouldn't just dumping it into the bin work?  Any thoughts?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=6057032091&ssPageName=ADME:B:TB6:US:2

I plan on using a vacuum system to get the corn upstairs to the stove.

TIA.

Rodder's Roundtable / High pressure fuel lines on PU
February 11, 2006, 01:29:28 PM
My GF bought a 90 GMC PU, and the fuel lines are leaking from the tank.  The truck is pretty rusty underneath.  I've got the tank dropped far enough to see the top, and of course, the sending unit pipes are rusty also.  Autozone says that they have a high pressure rubber fuel line that can be clamped onto a good section of steel pipe.  The steel pipe going to the filter is good.  The fuel return line is rusty ahead of the union that is right in front of the fuel filter.   Has anyone used this high pressure rubber hose, connecting onto the steel line, with good results?

Looks to me like gm made the fuel line, in effect, one piece from the tank to the engine.

Rodder's Roundtable / NOS windshields
May 23, 2005, 10:05:12 PM
A friend of mine has some NOS GM windshields from the 50's or 60's in the box.   He has 8 or 9; one or two might be take outs.  He has the numbers on the boxes for GM and LOF, but doesn't know what they fit.  If anyone is interested, send Chet an email at ccj206@hotmail.com.  It would help if you have the number of w/s you are looking for.  He needs the room, so I'm sure that they'll be going cheap.

I know he has two for a 58 Chevy, one for an Impala, and the other for sedans.  I tried the sedan one in my wagon, but couldn't get it to fit right.  He thinks that that one is a take out, but doesn't know why it wouldn't fit.

A friend of mine is cleaning out his storage garage, and says that he may have up to a dozen windshields in boxes, from GM or LOF.  He has the numbers, but doesn't know what they fit.  Would anyone have a book that would show what the numbers fit, so he can sell these instead of pitching them?

Rodder's Roundtable / 1991 GMC S-15 trans
December 10, 2004, 10:54:09 AM
I've still got the 91 Sonoma, the guy that won the auction bailed out.  Anyway, can someone tell me which tranny is in this truck.  Debating on pulling it out for the Poncho, or maybe the Chevy; Poncho now has the Caddy th400, the Chevy has a 3sp stick.  May just put it on ebay for a parts truck.

I've got a 91 Sonoma w/ 4.3L V6 that isn't oiling on the left side rockers.  It has 80k miles, few oil changes, never left town, but runs great and smokes bad.  I see some valve stem seals in the future, but would like to get the oiling going first.  Any ideas?

I finally got some pix of the Poncho frame; should've taken it outside, though. I've got it as far as I can take it until I get the body back on it, for fabricating the front fender and radiator mounts. The tranny has to be replaced/rebuilt, as it's burned up from being stuck in the snow (the previous owner of the Caddy). I'll also have to modify the trans tunnel, as the 400 is a bit higher than the old 3 speed that it replaced.

The front clip is a 72 Nova, engine/trans is 77 Caddy 425, rear end is 63 Merc 9".
