Members Rides / New addition to the fleet

I did not build this car, we wanted a cruiser to take the grandkids with us, as the fifty jimmy is only good for two people.  Its a 350/350 combo, century front clip, ten bolt, vintage air, coil overs...pretty standard resto rod stuff.   But.....man that long ol hood and that bustle trunk.

Rodder's Roundtable / 1940 Buick radio grill

Does anyone know what is supposed to hold this heavy cast chrome item in the grill of the 40 buick?  It was rattling so I diddled with it and it fell out and I cant find and clips or such in the dash or on the floor.

I have "finished" my 50  gmc I have worked on for about 13 years.  Nothing exotic, its a 350/350, disk brakes on the straight front axle, firebird rear end. I put vintage air in it and shot the paint in my driveway a few weeks ago.

I have visited with some members here over the years. Just wanted to share my truck

Hello Gents.  I have finally gotten the jimmy out on the road. However the speedo has quit working. It worked for a while, and was registering about 45 mph at 65 mph or so.

Some of the online speedo gear calculators want to know how many revolutions the speedo needs to register a mile. Would anyone happen to know this?  Or could you direct me to where I could find such information?

Thanks a bunch...Scott

I have dropped by here from time to time over the past 8 or ten years, I forget.  During that time and through all of lives challenges including moving three times, I have managed to get my GMC ready for its first legal trip down the street.  Just thought I would show it off.  Paint is coming, Im stuck between blitz black and hugger orange.

Rodder's Roundtable / Steering Wheel Rehab on the cheap
October 14, 2009, 11:46:26 AM
Hi guys. I am still pluggin away on my GMC. Just a few more things and it will finally be ready to drive a little.

One complication has been that I have come to possess a 48 F1 that was Dad's, then Grandpa's, then Brother's and is back to me. It looks pretty bad, but is actually in way better shape than the GMC when I started with it.  It has a later 223 six cylinder and a crash box granny tranny. I bought a 231 buick engine and auto tranny to put in it. and changed my mind, I am going to bring the six back up to running condition and leave it alone.

The steering wheel in the F1 is from a passenger car, I think a 55 ford car, made of white plastic with a big horn button. Actually it used to be one of the cooler things about the truck....Dad said the big wheel made it steer easier.

The plastic on this wheel is beyond repair. Most of it is missing. Mostly just the steel core left with a big horn button.  I have thought about several options. Wrapping it with some sort of leather to build it back up to something resembling its former diameter, I have considered using JB putty or some such.  I just wondered if any of you fine gents had done something creative with a wheel in this condition before.

the springs on the old gmc are saggin every which way. The front ones have just about lost all their arch, and the back ones are all crooked as well. the shackles are all pretty much wore out, no bushings left in em.

Has anyone ever changed out the springs front or rear on one of these? I kept the front straight axle and have a later open driveline rear in the back. I seem to remember reading where someone had used dodge caravan springs in the rear with good results.  I want to get rid of that stack of leaf springs in the rear anyway and get its tail down.

In other news, I managed to buy back dad's 48 ford half ton this week, and I am thrilled. It runs and drives, maybe not the greatest. I plan to just fix that which must be fixed for safety and run it the way it is.

Rodder's Roundtable / Lokar floor Shifters
January 31, 2008, 01:27:34 PM
Howdy. I am looking into a lokar floor shifter for my jimmy. I had built one  of my own design out of a firebird shifter, some  bicycle and riding lawn mower parts, but I wasnt thinkin about back up lights and not being able to start it in gear and back through the garage door.

Does Lokar have a kit to add back up light switch to  their floor shifters? the only one i can find is for column shift, tho I  could probably make it work if I had ever seen one. Oh yah, its a 350 auto transmission.

Hello every body. I used to lurk here quite often and post every now and then. Kind of had to take a break from building my old shot rod GMC due to a contract dispute that put us in court for about a  year. We won, or settled depending on how ya look at it.

Anyway, a couple years, one complete house change and  shop move and I am back at it.

The question.  I had a 350 tranny overhauled and a b/m shift kit put in it. It seems to work ok, except I think its starting out in 2nd gear, and if i manually put it in first, it stops the rear wheels, bogs the engine. Just quits working.
Where do I start troubleshooting?
