Quote from: "halfdone"SG Iron, cast correctly and at the right temperature, is reasonably ductile and will bend not break

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ductile_iron

Lots of suspension stuff is also done in investment cast stainless, in various alloys

Mark ive been working in steel and stainless for 40 yrs but what would i know ,as some site on the computer tells me im wrong ,time will tell who is correct ,i just hope nobody is hurt in the process,i guess we had better get back on the subject here before these boys think us aussies are fruitloops

Quote from: "Monte.b"gee Mark doesnt this company make cast iron dropped axles ,one of my favourite hates

multiple companies making columns are named in the info sheet, but yes one of them does make axles that I believe are cast

Cast axles are very common in many brands of vehicles, including huge semi's ......nothing wrong with them IF they are made correctly, from the correct grade of casting material (SG Iron for instance)

I personally however run good old Henry Ford forged axles, not because I think they are any better...... I just like them

I think you will find most truck axles are dropped forged or cast steel not cast iron ,i certinly wouldnt use a cast iron axle as when they have an impact they will not bend but break

certainly is a problem with design and parts.

Franks original post was an LVVTA Bulletin that provided an initial warning

This new link is a full LVVTA infosheet with far more detail and providing binding advise to vehicle certifiers in NZ

Well worth reading and diggesting

It is now out to all Australian ASRF Technical Advisory Committee's, and will be the basis of a new TAC policy shortly

Steering ain't something to save a few bucks on

In Australia they wont let us use Hiem joints ,never figured out why as they are used on lots of other applications even on heave machinery

Because their life is so short on a road going vehicle. They are only satisfactory when used in a very clean environment or replaced frequently.
Thanks mate, nice to see a friendly face here ,i must say ive seen them used on farm machinery for years and not real clean farms too ,seem to last ok there ,I know you have the knowledge so could you explain to us common folk the problem with using these and why the bolts are bending on this blokes front end ,regards,Monte.b

Quote from: "butch27"The threads of the bolt is not in shear.  I'm looking closer and it looks like the bolt is only angled what the Hiem joint total movement is. Weird ??
