Rodder's Roundtable / PT Cruiser
June 07, 2017, 06:43:06 PM
My buddy the carnut wants me to chop out the roll-bar on his PT convertable .  Has anyone done this?  Is it a part of the body braceing?  Is it going to get floppy if I cut it out?  Thanks for any help..

Rodder's Roundtable / Window trim clips
April 30, 2016, 08:42:14 PM
Have removed the stainless trim around the windows on my 40 Olds & over half of the little clips broke in half from rust.  Anyone know where I could buy some?  I used some plastic ones on my 40 Chevy but they dont work very good.

Rodder's Roundtable / need advise on brakes.
October 17, 2015, 08:26:14 PM
My 40 Olds 4-dr has had brake trouble since day one.  Soft petal the first inch then almost lock-up.  I am used to it & know how to make them work. Then the wife wanted to drive it. No way am I turning her loose in it. I put a new master cyl on  . No change, New power booster, no change. Checked the petal ratio, was off a little, changed it to 4 to 1 ratio, no change. New GM style proportioning valve, No change.
This is a 1980 camero sub-frame with disc & a GM rear of about the same year. rear (shoes) It has a Corvette master 1 1/8 bore, A dual diaphragm booster, & a GM proportioning valve. I am going to a adjustable proportioning valve.  Do I need a 1" master cyl ?  A single diaphragm booster?  I am to the point of making a big pile of brake parts in the floor & starting over from scratch.  Thanks for any help.

Rodder's Roundtable / Sensitive steering
November 27, 2012, 08:08:45 PM
My 40 Chevy with Mustang II front RP has always been touchy on the steering. It is SBC with the old style power steering pump.  A few months ago I seen Borgesons ad for a shim kit to reduce the pressure.  Bought it, installed it, loved it. Worked good.
A few weeks ago I changed tires & wheels. Went from 15"X 5" with 165/R1586T  to 15"X 7" Chevy rally wheels with 195/60 R15 tires. Cant hardly keep this thing on the street.  It is twice as touchy.  Had these same tires on it on different rims before with no trouble.
Anyone got any ideas?

Found this on craglist a couple of days ago.  I need this like a hole in the head, I dont even own a Y-block ford anymore.  Its just that it is the same one that I had on my T-coupe back in 73.  I reconize the nasty linkage & gas lines.  The guy thinks it is worth a $1000.  Someone talk me out of offering him a couple hundred for a wall hanging.

Rodder's Roundtable / Cleaning a gas tank
May 14, 2012, 05:28:15 PM
My 26 Ford vicky has been in storage now for over 5 years. I am thinking about getting it out.  I pulled the dist last sat & primed the oil for at lest 10 minutes. (50 lbs)  Now I have that gas tank to play with. What is the best thing to flush them with?  I added stable stuff when I parked it & its a stainless steel tank so no rust.  What is the best way to do this?

Rodder's Roundtable / Mustang II strut rods
April 29, 2008, 11:50:37 AM
I know this subject has been talked to death on here & I think I have read them all. Anyway, I have trouble with the strut rod brackets cracking out on the frame on my 40 Chevy sedan. They are only 3/16 steel & have been straightend & welded twice now. I am thinking of building some from 3/8 steel mounted on a steel plate that could then be welded to the frame.  Then I found this in a magazine. Looks like an easy bolt on fix, but I am not sure about the leverage that would be going on with it,  Would appreciate some opinions on this.  Thanks

Rodder's Roundtable / Crankshaft pully?
March 27, 2008, 07:45:30 PM
Am taking my 350 Chevy apart to put a new camshaft in it. I am to the part where you pull the harmonic balancer off & it is saying NO WAY.  I have a 3-prong puller on it with the 3-point plate bolted on. It just wont move.  Am worryed  about breaking the puller. I put a 2-ft. cheater bar on the wrench & went a full turn & no movement.  Anyone got any ideas?  Thanks, Roger

Drove the 40 Olds more dr. to try to sell. Didnt try real hard & didnt sell it.  Ran good the whole 800 mi. but that nasty cam is coming out.  Had a real good time.
Wife told me it looked like an ole fart meeting. Everyone looked over 50.

Rodder's Roundtable / 1951 Ford help?
March 30, 2007, 08:50:18 PM
Got a 51 ford in the garage to do an engine-tranny swap on.  Wants to change the steering box out while the motor is out.  Anyone know what late model steering box will fit?  I hear about a Volvo but what year & model will work?  Also, what kind of disc brakes would fit without a lot of machine work?  Is there a petal assy dual master cyl that will bolt on under the floor or would I be better off using a firewall mount swing petal?  Am putting the ole 350 - 350 SBC  with a mustang rear in it.   Thanks for any help.  Roger

Rodder's Roundtable / Power steering problem
September 08, 2006, 06:00:25 PM
Since I am a newby I guess I should intro myself. My name is Roger & Im an old carnut. I live around Wichita Ks. Had my first hot rod in 1957 and am still at it. Am retired from over 30 yrs. in the aircraft industry.  Have lost count of how many cars I have had over the yrs.
Have been lurking on this site for several years just soaking up the knowage. Now I have a problem that I have not seen before & am hoping someone can help with some info. I have a 65 Ford econoline PU with a 302 Ford engine.  The stock steering box bit the dust so I adapted a 79 Toyota 4X4 power box. Got the pump & brackets off a 80 F-150  Had to have the hoses made (4ft.long) used 250 lb. hydraulic hose. Worked good for about a month & then split the hose down the side. New hose. One more month & blows the crimped end off the hose. More new hose. 2 days ago it splits the hose down the side again. I am an old retired fart & cant afford to buy this many hoses. How much pressure is a power steering pump put out? It has been suggested that the Ford pump does not have a relief valve in it. (built in the box?)  Maybe I need to adapt a Toyota or GM pump onto my engine?  Has anyone had this problem with Ford pumps? Anyone help me on this?  Thanks, Roger
