Rodder's Roundtable / sand blaster
February 18, 2019, 12:37:24 AM
I posted about this briefly a few weeks ago. Between figuring out how I wanted to do this and gathering parts, here we are. This is a Harbor Freight bench top sand blaster. I made a stand for it so it's portable, and decided to make some other modifications. I wanted more room inside, so I dropped the screen support 3" which was just a matter of drilling new holes 3" lower and reinstalling it. I also changed it from internal non-adjustable mixing to an external adjustable mixing chamber.  This meant drilling a new hole in the bottom of the sand hopper to install the external mixing chamber.  I also wanted some good lights that were outside the blast chamber. So I cut two 4 1/4" holes in the top to install a pair of 4" acrylic hemispheres. I also modified, badly, a pair of 5 1/2" light sockets with reflectors, and LED bulbs to bolt into the same holes as the hemispheres. I used 10-32 Nutzerts to hold the screws in the top of the cabinet, and also to hold the frame for the window in front.

The cabinet had a hole for air inlet with a baffle, and one hole for a vacuum connection, but no baffle. So I fabricated a baffle for the  vacuum port, and pop riveted it into place. That will be all for now, more as I get into plumbing it.

Rodder's Roundtable / New project
November 12, 2018, 10:11:52 PM
While cleaning up from the 46 job, I decided I have to redo the shop so it.s more user friendly. I have two lathes that are new to me that are not set up yet. One is still in my van, and has been there for over a year.I have a new bead blaster that is over a year old, and has still not been put together.

So before I bring the Buick in, I am going to redo the shop so it makes some sense.

If you want one or more, send me a private message with your address on it, and the number of stickers you want. I will mail them out to you. Don't be shy, I have plenty. This goes for you lurkers too. :D

I was talking to a drag racer buddy the other day. He has been the Super Pro division Champ two times, and has been to Pomona twice. He tells me there is only one track within a hundred miles that still runs quarter mile in the weekly show. All the others have switched to eighth mile except for national events.

Rodder's Roundtable / 2004 Mustang problem
July 07, 2018, 12:36:58 AM
My grandson has a 2004 Mustang that he is having a problem with. This particular car is one he bought as a running driving low option very clean V6 automatic car. He stripped the shell bare, and started over. He bought and parted out several Mustangs to get all the parts he wanted. It has a full GT suspension, leather interior, cobra bumpers, a hood with a big scoop on it, 17 inch wheels, 373 8.8 with a locker, 3650 5 speed, and a two cam Mod motor out of a GT. He got it painted last year, it's a beautiful black and looks brand new.

The problem is a noise, a kind of click/rattle just off Idle. The noise continues until you let off the gas pedal. I have considered detonation, but it just doesn't sound right for detonation. It seems to be low in the engine at the center rear. It does not sound like a bad bearing.

Any one with a clue where to look?

Rodder's Roundtable / Unicorn auto parts store
March 28, 2018, 10:27:50 AM
I have a crankshaft that needs some work. So I took it to a store about 40 miles away that I have not used in some time, but is known for quality work. They have been is business since 1926 and in 1972 built the engines for the USAC champion sprint cars. It's in a remote town of about 500 people way out in the country.

When I got there, I see that the building has a new facade, and I knew the business had a new owner since the last time I was there. When I walked in the door it was a trip back in time. The first thing you see is a counter made of Dorman drawers with them facing the customer. There is not a computer in sight, and there are stacks of paper catalogs all over. The counterman had me bring the crank around back to the machine shop, so they could check it.

The place smells of cutting oil and caustic soda. There literally hundreds of crankshaft cores everywhere from single cylinder engines to six foot long truck cranks, and also just about as many cam shafts. Did I mention they regrind cams too? About half of the machines are driven by flat belts, but they have the latest in boring bars and head machines too.

They set my crank up in brass V blocks, check it for being bent, and then ask what I needed done. We discussed the necessary work, agreed on the very reasonable price, and he said it would be done friday. By the way this is a 70 year old engine, only made two years, and they had the bearings in stock.

There was a strange looking crank set up in another set of V blocks next to mine. I asked him what it fit, it was a 1919 Franklin  crank.

I wish there were more places like this.

What new car would you want? What old car? New I would buy a Bentley Continental. I have lusted for one for 40 years. And even a ten year old one is in the $80,000 range for a nice one. For an old car 1937 Cord Beverly sedan.  I have always thought it was the most beautiful car made at that time, and it has worn well with time. Now days that is out of my range too.

Rodder's Roundtable / Escape starting problem.
November 09, 2017, 06:41:49 PM
My 2001 Escape with a 3.0 V6 starts fine cold, but once it's warmed up it starts, but take what to me is excessive cranking. Any how it's more than it needed in the past. Once it starts, it runs rough for a few seconds, then smooths out with no more problems. I see in some places that the IAC can cause this problem, but I don't want to just start changing parts. Thanks in advance.

I just was made aware that Ron Fournier passed away on the 17th of September. He was 75 and has been one of my heroes since I read his book on metal shaping in the early 80s. A large number of the metal shapers around today were inspired by him, and many people will miss him.

RIP

Rodder's Roundtable / random thoughts
July 25, 2017, 09:56:34 AM
I may be imagining it but it seems like people don't think they can innovate any more. If there isn't a "kit" to hook a Cad/Lasalle transmission to a LS1 then it can't be done. They used to figure out how it could be done, and then do it.

It's been 20 years since the last SCB was installed in cars from the factory, and 30 years since they used flat tappet cams, and had four bolt valve covers.

I don't near as many unsafe "rat rods" as there were 10 years ago, but there are still some out there. And some of them have evolved into decent cars.

The level of craftsmanship is far and away the best it has ever been. There are some really talented young builders out there, but not as many as there was 30 years ago.

What are your thoughts.

DOOMSAYERS PREDICT THE END OF CARS

Auto industry decimated and no more car dealers by 2024 says US think tank
By NEIL DOWLING from today's news media

A FUTURE of electric cars, autonomous vehicles, shared ownership and ride sharing is seen as being inevitable and rapidly approaching the automotive industry, although one commentator has painted a pessimistic outlook for some players.
Like the sudden end of photographic film and the saturation of digital cameras, electric cars and autonomous vehicles are poised to change our lives and if you want to pick a date, an independent US think tank called RethinkX has called 2021.
That's the year that it says is the "disruption point" and in the 10 years leading to 2030, will shatter the automobile industry by deconstructing car dealerships, eradicating the used-car industry, shrinking the number of vehicles on the roads and slashing oil consumption.
There is not a lot of good news in RethinkX's report. The business is described as one that analyses and forecasts the speed and scale of technology-driven disruption and its implications across society.
"We know of no other market where a 10x cost differential has not led to a disruption," it said.
"This very significant cost differential will be the key driver for rapid and widespread transport as a service (TaaS) adoption for car owners.
"Potential car buyers will stop buying new cars. This will drive a rapid decline in production of new cars. As the volume of new-car sales falls, revenues will shrink and profits will drop even further.
"A vicious cycle will ensue, leading to factory closures and consolidation of production. The consequences of a shrinking industry will include a loss of economies of scale, which will lead to higher manufacturing costs for internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. "The result of increased supply of TaaS and reduced demand for individual owned cars is that the resale value of all used cars will plummet.
"The rising cost of maintenance, gasoline and insurance; the cost of storing or taxing worthless vehicles; and the lack of a used-car market might mean that prices go to zero or even below. That is to say, owners may need to pay to dispose of their cars.
"New ICE vehicle sales are finished by 2024, just three years after the regulatory approval and commercial availability of autonomous EV technology.
"In 2024, the pre-existing vehicle stock can more than meet the passenger-mile requirement for transport under individual ownership.
"Car dealers cease to exist by 2024, with no new individual ownership car sales from 2024 onwards and no direct consumer purchases given that TaaS vehicles will be fleet owned.
"Car insurance will be disrupted by a 90 per cent fall in the insurance costs incurred by TaaS users (relative to individual ownership), which is driven by the elimination of theft and sharp reductions in insurer costs for liability, injury and vehicle damage.

I have had a subscription to it for many years. I just read the latest one, and there were 56 pages of full page ads, not including the RJ ads that I didn't count That just seems like a lot for what it costs to subscribe, over 1/3 of the pages are ads.
