Can regular steel be welded to stainless steel?

This would be the grade of stainless used in exhaust header flanges with regular steel tubes welded to the flanges

Mig, Tig, or stick, mild steel, nickle, or stainless, anything will work.

that is good to read.

I may have a source for some inexpensive water jet cut flanges for my turbo Ford 6 project.

I am not sure I will use the regular steel tubes, I may buy stainless tubes if I can find the size tube I need at a resonable price.

I don't need much.  I guess the cost would not be too bad.

Hello;
Saw an article about this. I noticed that when finished, the welding done, was really nice. I know that this wasn't true so I read more to find out that when you weld this stuff, it is good to use high temp silver paint to cote the welds so that they don't get rusty and look ugly!
Just my $.02 worth.

Use TIG only.
Use stainless rod. 304 or 309 doesn't matter.
If you do stainless headers you must either purge the inside or use special flux or the weld will look really bad on the inside.
If you can't TIG weld make steel headers and use a gas welder, braze tubes to flanges. If you use MIG you will not like them.

MIG welding is for making trailers.

good info from all, thanks.

looks like I may go the regular  steel tube route and have the header jet hot coated
