Rodder's Roundtable / Car Crazy at Bonneville
November 23, 2009, 09:36:09 PM
Might be old news by now, but I saw a new segment of Car Crazy last week, about Bonneville Speed Week.  When they got to the part with the folks cruising the hotel parking lots, a Big Olds cruised by.  A very familiar looking Big Olds.  Also saw a familiar patina green deuce roadster, which if I'm not mistaken, belongs to one DRD57.  Cool.

Rodder's Roundtable / 55 Poncho for sale locally
February 15, 2009, 10:33:40 PM
I ran into a guy at the hardware store, when he saw my car he asked if i would be interested in a 55 Pontiac 4 door that needs lots of work.  Had to go take a look, the asking price is way low.  This one's stored in the open air, no motor or trans. The only rust is two spots in the front floor.  Has the pink slip.  Looks like Riviera or Wildcat rims, 4 of them.  Needs windshield and some side glass.  No one has been dancing on the roof...yet.

If it were a 2 door I would already have it in my yard.  But, too many projects to take on another.  Hmmm wonder what DRD could do with this?  A very long vert?  shorten and chop?

Rodder's Roundtable / Agreed value insurance
January 30, 2009, 10:50:45 AM
I'm getting ready for some traveling and I want to switch to an agreed value policy for my wagon.  So far I've looked at Hagerty (no trailers, no camping), Grundy (no trailers) and JC Taylor (3500 miles per year max).

Anyone know of an outfit that will offer agreed value without the mileage/use limits, and isn't afraid of camping or towing a trailer?  Where the Plymouth goes, the teardrop follows.

Rodder's Roundtable / New toy
January 04, 2009, 09:59:08 PM
Well, I've gone and done it now.  As if it weren't enough keeping up with the Momad, Bronco, and Motorsickle, I bought this little beauty for Christmas.  Hope the photo shows up.  It's a 1939 Allis-Chalmers.  Note the gasser-like stance due to the big truck tires in back.  Somebody stop me!

Rodder's Roundtable / 1953 NM tag
October 24, 2008, 10:41:21 AM
Now that I'm a New Mexican, I'm looking for a YOM plate for my wagon.  I need a 1953 New Mexico automobile tag.  If anyone has one, I'd be interested.  I have a pair of black and yellow CA tags last registered on my 55 chevy in 1968.  Be willing to do some horse trading.

Rodder's Roundtable / I've been banned!

Heck, I got a new email address with Google (gmail) and when I tried to change my profile, it says my email address has been BANNED!  What the...?

I think I need a set of these bleeder screws.  They have a spring loaded check ball so one person can bleed brakes.  Checking online I haven't seen much in the line of dealers.  Anyone know of a shop in SoCal that has them, or a reliable mail order source?

Rodder's Roundtable / Edelbrock advice needed
March 27, 2007, 05:25:38 PM
I have a buddy with an Edelbrock 600cfm on a 350 Chevy. Always ran good but lately it developed an intermittent backfire through the carb at highway speeds.  It will pop anywhere from once to three times then run ok then pop again.  If he pushes the throttle down til you hear the secondaries open it runs fine.  It's just right around the top end on the primaries.  I'm thinking lean mixture.  Someone suggested it might be a low float level. Anyone had a similar problem?  What cured it?

I gotta share this shot I took on Sunday.  It's not my car but I wish it was.

During the day the forum started to run really slow, then I couldn't get in at all.  Then it forgot my password.  Had to request a new password to get in tonight.  I notice almost everyone viewing right now is a Guest.  Has the server been experiencing the hiccups today? :?:

Rodder's Roundtable / Cal Rods Santa Anita Show pics
March 19, 2007, 05:30:04 PM
Here's a link to some pics I took yesterday.  Beautiful weather and a very nice setting for a car show.  The horses were running too, so there was plenty to see and do.  Many thanks to the Cal Rods for setting this up.  I believe they are the same folks that do the NHRA Twilight Cruises.

Dial up warning:  There are about 50 pics at this link, so if you go there, might want to go for coffee while it loads

Rodder's Roundtable / Sunday activities
March 19, 2007, 02:25:51 AM
Attended the Ca Rods show at Santa Anita Racetrack.  The gals sure seem to like teardrop trailers.  I caught these two little scamps in mine and had to give em both a good shaking.

I'll upload more pics, even some with cars, when I get time.

Sitewide User FAQ / rectangular avatars
October 03, 2006, 12:50:50 AM
I noticed that with some recent board upgrades, seems like any avatar I try ends up getting stretched into a square when it displays.  The image gets stretched outta shape too.  Seems like rectanglular ones used to display in their normal scale.  Is there a trick to using a non-square pic for an avatar and not getting it stretched to fit?

Rodder's Roundtable / Route 66 Rendezvous
September 17, 2006, 11:43:30 AM
I spent a few hours in San Bernardino yesterday.  That is one big car show.  The link will connect to a few photos I shot.  Something for everyone at this one.  The open header competition was great.

Rodder's Roundtable / I hate it when I do this
July 31, 2006, 01:54:27 PM
I was tinkering with my dual carb linkage and decided I needed a couple coils less in the return spring.  Somehow as I was wrapping the spring around the linkage rod, I managed to pierce my finger with the end of the spring.  Odd thing was, I couldn't seem to pull my finger away from the linkage. Turns out it pierced my finger and came back out in another spot, attaching me to the linkage.  Of course, I was draped over the fender and the motor was running and any attempt to get loose just goosed the throttle.  Luckily I had a needlenose within reach and after a few minutes I was able to straighten enough coils to get the nippers down close and cut myself free.  I couldn't resist snapping a photo before I backed the spring out like you would a fish hook.   BTW, the carbs are synched up real nice now.

Rodder's Roundtable / Rattly Moon Disks
June 30, 2006, 12:40:25 PM
I put a set of screw-on 15" Moons on my car, they look great but they like to rattle in turns and going over bumps. I have 'em torqued down as tight as possible, any more might distort them.  Mooneyes says to run a bead of silicone around the rim and re-install to cure the rattle, but I'm thinking that could get tedious if I need to re-silicone them each time I check tire pressure. Anyone else dealt with this?  Or should I just name my car the Rattler?

There's a writeup on the Mooneyes Christmas party in the July 06 OSR. Nice big photo of that hard to miss Rambler, and that pic got the Mooneyes logo too.

Rodder's Roundtable / New motor is in
April 10, 2006, 02:53:47 PM
A couple of you may remember my Plymouth wagon from last year's L.A. Roadsters week in Southern Cal.  Here's what I've been up to recently.  New motor went in two weekends ago.  Fired up last Saturday. Next up: An exhaust system.

Rodder's Roundtable / Prepping chrome for paint
March 05, 2006, 11:09:45 AM
I have some small chromed parts that I'd like to paint.  I know paint doesn't adhere to chrome very well.  Any ideas on how to get an etched surface on the chrome? These are odd shaped small parts so hand sanding is out.  Maybe a diluted acid dip, or put 'em in a rock tumbler with some sand?  I don't have access to a sand blaster.

Rodder's Roundtable / Attaching Moon Discs
February 14, 2006, 12:04:44 AM
OK, my friend Grandadeo says I have to drill big holes through my rims and tires and put nuts inside if I want to use screw-on type moon discs.  Now he just might be pullin' my leg, so I thought I'd ask for a second opinion.  (I asked him for one, and he said, "you're ugly too")

Whats the right procedure for fastening these on?  Not the clip-on ones, the screw ons.

Thanx

Rodder's Roundtable / Makin' gaskets
September 02, 2005, 04:52:48 PM
Anyone know of a good trick or tool for punching out the bolt holes when making your own gaskets? I always end up with something that looks pretty crude. I've tried scissors and electric drills in the past.

I ordered the Offy intake for my flathead 6 project today, from Car Products up in Paragonah, Utah, a really nice guy to deal with. Already got the split exhaust manifold and the carbs.  Yeah, I'm smilin'! :D

I'm looking for a good machine shop near the San Gabriel Valley in Southern California. Getting ready to take my block, crank and head for a rebuild. Mopar flathead 6. Someone recommended JM Machine in Duarte but I can't find them, no phone listing. I'm in Glendora so anything in the area would be a help. Thanx.

I picked up 5 used stock rims for my wagon and I'm wondering, what's the best way to get 'em down to bare metal, chemical stripper or blasting?
Over the years they got painted a strange copper color.
