Attached is a picture pf the mount for a power steering pump on a car currently in enjenjo's shop. What I want to know is how some people get away with stuff like this and I can spend hours engineering a bracket that prevents stuff like this and have nothing but problems with the design.

Rodder's Roundtable / Need some help
July 10, 2011, 10:48:05 AM
I am working on a personal project and need to know if there are any members here that are in the Biloxi, MS or Baton Rouge, LA areas that could answer or get an answer to a question I have. This question is specific to that region and Internet searches have not revealed an answer that does not have contradictions.

Rodder's Roundtable / Thoughts and prayers for a member
January 02, 2011, 02:19:00 PM
I saw this post concerning a member of our happy little club here on another forum.

I hope that if Steve gets better that it happens soon and if he is to pass from this world it is with as little pain as possible. My thoughts are with his family.

Messages with images do not have to be hosted off-site to get the images posted inline with the text. It just takes several more steps than if you simply attach images to the post. Now lets start with the attachment box

After you select the file you want to add to your post you would have the posted attachments section appear after you click the add attachments button in the picture above. It would look like the image below

If you notice in the image above there is a section that says file name and then has the name of the file you attached in this case it is called attachbox.jpg. If you right click on that file name you get a dropdown box that has a selection in it that says Copy Shortcut. If you select that option and then paste that into the text of your message you can place the images inline with the text like you see in this post. The selection is denoted by the red arrow in the image below.

That information would be posted in the message body box in between image tags like the image below in the order you want them to appear. Now if you will notice in the image below that the file names have been changed. That is done by the software that uploads the images. It is done with a randomly generated number so that if two people tried to upload and image called mycar.jpg the upload would not fail or would over-write on the second image due to a file already existing with that name.

That is all there is to getting the images inline with the text. It is also important to note that if you upload the image using the attachment box, then copy the link, and select the delete attachment button you will have a broken image with the post. This is because you have deleted the uploaded image and it no longer exists. So what you will end up with is a post that has the images inline and then the same images in their own section at the bottom in the reverse order of how they were uploaded.

It has been a while since I did an update on the Chevy. It is not because I have not been working on it. I have been quite busy finishing up repairs to the frame. In mid-November I started on the coil spring rear suspension. I am using a 76 Malibu rearend and a set of Speedway control arms for the same car. We had to fab up a set of mounting point and spring perches. Here is what we started with...

After a couple long weekends and a couple of redesigns we ended up with this...

While I was building the control arm mounts I added a set of mounts to hold the emergency brake cables.

Next we moved on the front suspension. I purchased a Welder Series crossmember kit. It is a real nice deal if you want to weld the crossmember up yourself. We spend a day installing and welding up the front crossmember and this is the final result...

Next we moved on to the trans crossmember. We used a crossmember of our own design which allows for removal of the trans mount without pulling the brake assembly. The legs of the K unbolt from the main leg and allow the brake assembly to be left in place. We also manufacture a brake pedal assembly that uses the factory brake pedal and locates it in the factory location. We then mounted the booster and master cylinder and have that all tacked together.

At this stage we are left with welding up the underside of the front and rear suspension and brake pedal assembly and installing motor mounts. Once all that is done I will be sandblasting the frame again and prepping it for paint.

I hope to have the frame work done this weekend so that I can focus on replacing the middle body mounts for the body, filling the firewall and notching the trunk floor for the rear suspension. I am hoping to have the body back on the frame by the first part of March.

I lost a few weekends in December because I went to Dallas for Christmas. The I lost a few more while I was out looking for a new car for my wife to replace the one that blew up in the middle of Missouri on the way home from Dallas. On the plus side though we did find the color for the Chevy while out looking for a car. We are going to paint it 2008 Buick Cocoa Metallic, it is a lighter brown color. The interior will be a light tan color.

Rodder's Roundtable / 1948 Chevy Update for October.
October 28, 2007, 10:44:11 PM
Well this have moved along slowly on the Chevy this last month. Because of family and school obligations I do not get much time during the week to work on the car. A couple of the weekends this month I spent at swap meets looking for parts. So it has been the last 2 weekends that anything could be done to the car. Last weekend I took the body off the frame and removed all the old suspension.

I did that because there were a couple of areas on the rear of the frame that looked suspicious. One of them being a really bad repair in the past. It only took a few hours and same minor torch work and the body was off and setting on a dolly.

On Sunday I took the frame over to my work and used our industrial sandblaster to remove all the paint, grime and rust from the frame.

Once cleaned there were a couple more surprise areas that I had not noticed before the undercoating removal.

Here is the bad repair I spoke of earlier. Not only was it nor completed, it was also crooked in both directions and incorrectly shaped. What they had done was use a pair of front frame horn to repair the left side rail.

So I spent yesterday and today making a new section of rail to replace the above part.

Rodder's Roundtable / A/C service experiences
October 23, 2007, 07:06:10 PM
Ok while at work today a question came to mind. What is the most you have ever recovered out of an A/C system?

The reason thsi question came up is that a customer brought in a Bluebird motorcoach that had a barely functioning A/C system. When we evacuated the system we removed 10.2 lbs. of freon from the system. The biggest R134a system I have ever seen on a truck took 5 lbs. This particular unit was supposed to have 4 lbs. in it.

So what is the most over-charged system you have ever seen?
#16
OK there was some speculation as to the details of my latest project. Last week at Kalamazoo I found a deal on a 48 Chevy 4 Door Sedan in the swap meet area. I bought the car on only a few picture of it on a flyer.

Yesterday Enjenjo and I went to pick it up. In some respects it was a better deal than I thought because there were a few extra parts included with the car. However all the glitters is not gold and there are a few issues that need attention.

The body has had some repairs in the recent past that have been done pretty good for the most part but in looking at the frame there is an area that has been repaired badly and that will need to be fixed before I can continue on. So instead of building the chassis with the body on I am forced to remove it to repair the frame.

My plan is to have the car on the road by the first part of April. I am going to use a 305 Chevy motor I have been hanging on to for years. I bought a Tuned Port Intake so I will be running that. This will be hooked to a 700R4 trans. I am going to install a Mustang II frontend and a later rear with a 3.40-3.70 gear. We plan for this to be a cruiser. Miss Kitty and I have not decided on exactly what color it will be but it is supposed to be a finished car by the first part of April. So I will be a busy beaver over the winter.

All Time Great Stories / Remembering the times
August 12, 2007, 07:44:54 PM
From Toledobill,

I don't know if this rates as "All-Time" story, but it's for sure one I won't forget.  It concerns a youthful disregard for logic, but first you have to understand what drag strips were like back in pre-historic 1959.
We had Eliminator run-offs for the class winners, but this was before indexing and Christmas trees, so the way we handled it was to give a car length advantage for each class break.  If an A/ Stocker was racing a C/ Stocker in Stock Eliminator for instance, it would get two car lengths.  I'd line up the A/ Stocker at the starting line, and then put my red flag down at his front bumper.  I d signal the C/ Stocker to pull ahead until his REAR bumper was even with my flag.  Then I would go up to his front bumper and put my flag down again and signal him to pull forward again until his rear bumper was once more at my flag.  Now he had his two-car-length lead and I could begin the standard flag start of 1959.
To accomplish a flag start, I held a green flag in my right hand and a red flag in my left.  I would touch the green flag to the ground signifying that both cars were lined up properly and then point the red flag in my left hand at the driver in the left-hand lane.  When he nodded that he was ready, I would point the red flag at the other driver for his okay.  When he nodded too, I'd curl the red flag behind my back (where it stayed unless there was a bad start).  The tricky part was coming up now.  I had to vary my timing and my twitches so that neither driver could guess when I was bringing the green flag up to signal the start of the race.  Lifting the flag also meant I'd jump while waving the green flag so everyone could see the race was on and at the same time do a half-spin so I came down looking at the cars as they passed me.  That way I could point the red flag at the lane of anyone who jumped the start or wandered out of their lane.  As I watched the race, I'd be facing the finish line.

So here comes my story.

Back then, Toledo was the home town of an absolute KILLER of a 1951/1952 Studebaker four-door sedan.  It had been blueprinted and maxed out by two local mechanics that carefully chose it because that car, with its advertised horsepower and its published shipping weight, sat at the absolute top HP/Weight of the lowest NHRA Stock class.  Back then, it may have been M/Stock or N/Stock, but whatever it was, it was the absolute bottom stock class for the NHRA, and this car was about 5 pounds from being one class higher.  The car was raced for years and held the national NHRA record for a number of those years.
So there am I flag starting Stock Eliminator between the Studebaker and an early-production A/Super Stock 1960 Plymouth Sport Fury with the Golden Commando engine sporting a cross-ram with two four barrels.  I set the Fury at the line and begin pacing off car lengths.  It should have dawned on me after the car lengths were well into the double digits that this was going to be more than mildly interesting, but the crowd was going wild as I kept marking off car lengths and the Studebaker kept inching down the strip.  When I had finally accounted for the class difference, I walked out another twenty feet so that the Studebaker driver could see me, and began the ritual.  Green flag down, point the red flag at the Studebaker.  He nods, point the flag at the Fury.
Oops, I can see the Fury way back at the starting line, but I can't tell if the driver is nodding or not.
Well, wait another five seconds and if he is still in his car, assume he nodded.  Red flag behind me, do my crouch, wait a few seconds, and do my jump-wave-twist.  As I watched the Studebaker launch its way down the strip, I heard from somewhere far off the sound of massive amounts of air being sucked into two healthy four-barrels.  The sound kept getting louder as I watched the Studebaker putter off on its way to the finish line.  The sucking sound was getting deafening when it dawned on me that I WAS STANDING IN THE CENTER OF THE DRAG STRIP HALFWAY TO THE FINISH LINE WITH MY BACK TO A COMPLETE STRANGER WHO WAS COMING AT ME AS FAST AS HE COULD.
I think only a kid my age would not have connected those dots before it was too late.  Was this guy competent?  Or was he just some rich kid whose daddy had bought him a new car?  Was there time to move at all before the Fury was on me?

I m told the Fury caught the Studebaker in the last twenty yards, but my eyes were still clenched shut, so I have to rely on hearsay.  I CAN tell you that an A/Super Stocker passing inches from you halfway down a strip will just about suck the flags out of your hands and reacquaint you with the prayers of your youth.  I m just proud to this day that I didn't need a change of underwear.

It is that time of year. Time for me to ask for your support. I have and will continue to make improvements to the site. I have noticed that lately we have picked up a few new members. This might seem different from what you have seen on other sites. I like to think that by being member supported we will provide a service to you the member as well as feel that by supporting you have something of an interest in what goes on here. As in past years I will accept payments throughout the year and only want you to donate when you are ready and willing. It should also be noted that you do not have to donate any amount to use the site or to be able to post here. The only real benefit at this time to our supporters is that they can post images to their personal picture gallery that is part of their profile. There are no special forums for members nor will there ever be a time that we will require you to pay to play here.

As a new addition to the site today if you go to the forum index you will see a new forum called Tech Archive. This is a forum of various tech posts from the site. The post in there have been selected by the moderators as being tech orentied. If you find a post that you feel should be included please feel free to PM either myself, Enjenjo, and we will look into putting it in the forum. Right now the forum in not postable by anyone by moderators. This will likely change in the near furture so that you will be able to ask questions right on the tech post.

I have put some of the details up on this page. If you would note there are two different email links for Paypal. One is for accounts supported by a credit card and another for those supported by bank accounts. If you use the one supported by a credit card, Paypal takes 1.5%+ a fee to process the transaction. So if you are using a bank account to make Paypal payments use the other one as We would get the full benefit of your donation. As always I also have contact info on that page so that if you want to mail me something it is on that page.

Before I am done let me also say that those of you that have already given me or enjenjo monies and/or setup auctions for support of the site. Thank you for your support.

If you have any questions just post them on this thread or email me at

You posted in the chat room last night

sirstude: Roundtable Chat Anyone fiddled with obdII scanner software for a laptop? Got my old laptop from work and hate to let it go to waste.

I have some. I bought the package from http://www.obd-2.com/ that does all the major stuff. I think it was the tricombo package. I have used it a number of times on my Dakota, my wife's Olds and my son's Contour. I have an old laptop that was given to me recently with a bad hard drive. I am planning to use one of the various cd based Win XP OSes to run it right off the CD. My boss liked it so much that we purchased the same system to use in our shop.

Please do not cross post them to this forum. This does not mean that you will no longer be able to post off topic items here in this forum. I will be monitoring the situation and if I feel that the Off topic forum in not being utilized effectively I may remove it. It will follow the same rules as the rest of the site and will be moderated by the same people that moderate all of our forums.

Rodder's Roundtable / 1999 Old Pass Key Light
November 05, 2006, 03:26:23 PM
My wife's Olds Silohouette has decided to turn this light on, on the dashboard as of late. It does not always stay on when you start the car up but from time to time it will come on at startup and stay on until you turn the car off. The book for the says that it just means that the security for the ignition disable is not functioning as long as the light is on. How do I figure out where the problem is so I can fix it. My first thought was there is something wrong with the key but both keys do it. They are also the original keys that came with the car new.

I have added a Photo album to the forums. There is a public folder that images can be posted too. Also users that have supported the site financially have the option of uploading images to a separate gallery that is theirs alone. This is available to anyone that supports the site. The image upload feature of the forum is still available for posting to threads.

But if you would like to post images that will be viewable with your profile then you can place them in your personal gallery.

Just talked to enjenjo. They spent the evening last night fixing the problems with the car that caused the slide and spin. Had to fix on door skin that buckled in the wind. Had to have the car reinspected. They adjusted weight in the car and went out and ran at 227MPH at the 3 mile mark. He shut down at that point due to high exhaust gas temps. He was only using 54% of throttle at that point. Enjenjo sayd that they think ne can make 240MPH if they can do some more tweeking.

It is that time of year. Time for me to beg for support.

Sitewide User FAQ / Members of the RRT that use AOL
December 31, 2005, 10:16:51 AM
I am writing this to inform you that the new AOL spam blocker tools have been used to designate the server that hosts this site as a spam server. So for the foreseeable future you will not be getting any correspondence from this site. Any email that is sent from a @roddingroundtable.com address to a @aol.com address will be considered spam and will be dropped into an abyss never to be seen again.

I have been in contact with the hosting company and they have tried to discuss this with AOL and have not had any results. So if you are someone that needs to be able to receive email through the site or notices of new posts on threads, or instant messages you will need to use a different email address on this site.

I am sorry for the inconvenience but this one happens to be entirely out of my hands and AOL is not willing to listen to reason. Remember they do stuff like this for your own protection

Rodder's Roundtable / James Dean Gallery Closing
December 14, 2005, 09:42:59 PM
The James Dean Gallery first opened in September of 1988 in the late actor's hometown of Fairmount, Indiana and remained in an old Victorian house on tree lined North Main Street for fifteen years before relocating to a modern state-of-the- art Deco style building at a nearby Interstate exit. "It was nice in the old Victorian house, but it was wooden, drafty and damp at times" says Dean archivist and Gallery owner David Loehr. After a small electrical fire in the house Loehr decided the move was necessary for the long term preservation of the World's largest collection of Dean memorabilia. The new 7,200 square foot facility is temperature and lighting controlled, and is virtually fireproof.

Rodder's Roundtable / Lets talk advertising slogans
November 19, 2005, 08:03:32 PM
I was thinking about this the other day on the way home from work. There are alot of old advertising slogans that my children have never heard of. I have of course because my parents talked about them as I was growing up.

This came to mind and I was thinking about things like

Firestone - "Where the rubber meets the road"
Esso/Exxon - "Put a tiger in your tank"
Unocal - "The spirit of '76"
Texaco - "You can trust your car to the man who wears the star"
Oldsmobile - "This is Not Your Father's Oldsmobile."

So anyway I would like to create a webpage within the site that lists these sorts of slogans. I am planing to break it down some by type of service or product. I would like to get as complete a list as possible, so if it from 3 years ago or 70 years ago that is fine. I would also like to include things like regional advertising campaigns. So if you have something to add please include it here and I will start compiling a list.

I would like all of you out there to contribute to this as well don't think that someone else later will say something your thinking of now. Lets hear it sooner rather than later.

Rodder's Roundtable / So what has everybody been up to?
November 19, 2005, 07:51:15 PM
As the subject implies. Things have been somewhat dead around here. What has everyone been doing that is keeping them away from here.

I will start with my story. I was able to gain active employment about a month ago. I am now working for a small company that sells new and used motor homes as well as used semi tractors and trailers. I have also been spending most of my online time playing a game called Space: Glory through Conquest. I have not been doing much in the way of car related activities. On the weekends I have been helping enjenjo install a 350 TPI motor in his old Fleetline. I have also spent many of my evenings with my lovely bride of almost 1 year. I am still sure we made the right choice but I can't say she thinks so. You will have to ask her.

Lets hear your story.

In an attempt to clean up the admin panel and reduce the size of the forum database. I am going to be removing accounts that have never posted a message or logged into their account. I will NOT be removing accounts of users that have posted messages or logged into your account. however if I find that there are a bunch of accounts that have not posted any messages I may remove those too.

If you are going to sign up for an account you need to become active and post. There are at this time 64 users that have never even logged into the forums after signing up.

I am also planning to remove accounts with invalid email addresses. I have stressed this on many separate posts and still get accounts where people do not update their email address when they change providers. When you do this I get an email in my inbox every time you subscribe to a thread with an invalid address. There is one that I am currently aware of on the 30 Model A on a blazer chassis thread and I have gotten like 15 emails telling me that the email address is invalid.

I will be doing all this on Sunday. So if you are worried your email address might be wrong you had better check it in the next couple of days.

Thanks

In the last couple weeks I have gotten a number of emails asking me to look up your password for the forum. Most because they have been inactive for a while some because they are new members and did not read the on screen messages when they signed up.

I can not see passwords in the forum software. All I see a asterisks. Seven of them to be exact. In the database they are encrypted. They appear as a number that is 12 characters long.

So that leaves me withone option. I can use the password reset feature to reset and email that new password to you.

Now here is the reason for my post. You can use that same feature yourself if you take the time to look at the on screen messages. When you try to log in and supply the wrong password or user name the software will tell you so. it will also offer you the option of requesting a new password in the form of a link that says "I've forgotten my password" it will then ask you for your username and your email address. Then it will email you a new one after you hit the submit button.

If you could do this instead of sending me an email that says "I cant login in" and nothing else. Which means I now have to search the user base for that email address to find the user name then take that name and email address and go to the reset screen and send it to you that would help alot.

Don't think you will remember all that? Then book mark this link.

http://www.roddingroundtable.com/forums/faq.php#4

You can find alot in the FAQ. It answers alot of questions.

Now if your issue is that you have changed email providers since you last logged in and know the user name and email address you registered with. You can email me with those details and I will see about getting the email updated so you can get a new password. As this is a completely different issue.

I have decided that I would add an additiona template to the forum system. I know that a couple of the HRI members have voiced a dislike for the yellow background on the pages.

So in the spirit of friendship I have duplicated the color scheme off of the HRI site. So you can now view this site in the same scheme as the HRI.

If you go to the Profile option at the top of the page

On the next page you will see a number of options. For the HRI members most of this is new for you as we have a much more robust profile setup.

From here you want to select the Profile tab. it will load another screen that looks like this

You have the choice of filling out any or none of that information. Right at the moment we are really not worried about any of that. We are looking for the Profile Settings options on the left. Click that link and it will look almost like this.

You will see on the right side a drop down box with the words to thr right of it that say Board Style and the default option is selected. Which is the RRT layout. Click the drop down like in the image and you will see an option for a HRI Layout. Select that option and press the submit button at the bottom.

After that it will take you to a page that will tell you your profile was updated but the layout will look like the RRT design. This is normal. From here reload the index page of the forum and you should have the familiar Blue layout you are used to from the HRI site.

I hope that this is clear. If not feel free to ask questions and I will jump in and answer them.

Final note. Please do not ask me to make a bunch of different layouts. Each one takes time to hand code all changes that need to be done when a update comes out. I have already doubled my work load just by adding another one. You will just have to decide which one you like more and use it.
